Howdy, folks.
I've got an open carry question. When is it too much? Reason being, I saw a guy open carrying that had his gun, 2 magazine pouches, a pouch for mace/pepperspray, a pouch for a leatherman or pocket knife and a pouch for a cell phone. Is that taking it too far. I really don't like to judge but I've rarely seen open carry in person and don't know if it's normal or not, so when I see this, I just think it's silly. Where do you draw the line from plain old open carry to being mistaken for Batman or a police officer?

Maybe he should carry a purse instead? ;)

I've seen some plainclothes officers who had that much stuff on their belts.

Hey, it's not illegal. It's not for me, but neither are piercings, tattooes, and mohawks either.

gun, 2 magazine pouches, a pouch for mace/pepperspray, a pouch for a leatherman or pocket knife and a pouch for a cell phone.

Would you feel more comfortable if all these items were concealed, or in pockets?...

No, its not too much.

More people that you think carry all these items and more every day. The guy you saw didn't even have a flashlight(s)?

I'd say he wasn't very prepared at all.

I think he needs one of these:

Was he carrying anything illegal or illegally? No law against looking like a mall ninja, I think you were the one that over reacted

Is this Normal?

One adjective to the word Normal; conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; not abnormal; regular; natural.

So the answer is, no, that is NOT normal behavior, nor is it ilegal or insane behavior, but it's definitely not normal.

People who get over concerned about normalcy worry me.:D

With the exception of the pepper spray, I've carried all those things on occasion - usually some of it is just in my pockets. Too much stuff on my belt jabs me when I sit.

Men loves their gadgets. Some more than others.

I really like those utilikilts, but I spend a lot of time up a ladder. I don't want the guys on the ground to get an inferiority complex.

i carry all that and more. i just have bigger pockets than that guy, apparently. i carry OC and a utility HAK on my keys, a flashlight in my pocket, and a BUG in another pocket. you open carry; by most people's opinion's, you're not normal. judge not.

I wear a Blackhawk utility belt with all kinds of pouches on a regular basis.

Normal? No, I get a lot of funny looks.

But, I also don't like having crap in my pockets. I can carry more of the things I like to have with me in greater comfort. So, I don't frankly care what it looks like, I do it anyway.

Are you sure it was mace? I carry a Surefire light all the time, and it regularly gets mistaken for mace.

Unfortunately, by the standards of modern society, carrying a gun in the first place isn't "normal".

I didn't overreact, I just thought in my opinion it was a bit much. I also said I'm not too familar on Open Carry yet so I had no clue if it was normal. Oh, and to the pepper spray, it could've easily have been a flashlight.

I was going to say he was missing a flashlight there, but if it was a flashlight, then he was missing mace/OC. If its comfortable to him then let him have it at it. I, personally, don't like to have all that on my belt. As was said previously it becomes uncomfortable when driving and just regular sitting. So instead of having it all on my waist, I carry a bag.

I'm actually thinking over the same thing for myself. I already carry a Leatherman Surge and a SureFire G2LED on the left side of my belt. Once I get my Blackberry Pearl, that'll probably go on the other side. Then, once I start OCing, I'll be carrying my gun on my right side too! And if that wasn't to much already, I'd like to carry double speedloaders as well. I guess those will have to be forgone in favor of speedstrips that can fit in my pocket. But even without speedloaders, four things on the belt?! Just from an aesthetic standpoint, I think that would be a little to much. I wonder if it would make much of a difference if I carried IWB...

Must have had a good belt!
Hopefully in a quick stressful situation he reaches for the correct pouch. I don't see any problem with carrying all of that. I don't like having that much stuff hanging off my midsection but if it works then more power to 'im.

All I can say is...the guy's back must have been soar at the end of the day! Back in uniform days, I'd go minimal as policy would let me.
I can't even imagine chasing someone on foot with half of what the local cop shop sells on my waist!

Its not normal for a woman to carry a leatherman-type multi-tool in her purse, but I do.

Its not normal for a family of 6 to have 5 computers, but we do.

I wouldn't want to have all that stuff clanking around on a belt all the time, but I probably carry four times that much in general (not necessarily defensive), gear in my purse.

He was just carrying a gun, spare ammo, a knife, probably a flashlight, and a phone. Not like he had an ASP baton, a tazer, handcuffs, a radio, a backup gun, and gloves on there too.

I started off carrying all that stuff. Gun, magazine, cell phone, knife, leatherman, flashlight. It got old FAST.

Now I'm down to a spare magazine, my cell phone (almost never used), and my gun. A Swiss Army knife is in my pocket, and a flashlight is in the glove box.
