Ithaca 37 questions

I hate it when that happens, so I recently downloaded a "new" book for my "old" (1970) M37, from GunShowOnTheNet.com.
The blue text on black background is kind of a pain, but the list is alphabetical. This link will get you right to the PDF (Adobe Acrobat) for the Ithaca 37/87 "Field Maintenance Instructions."

Sometimes even with instructions, I end up with parts left over.
"Read The Fine Manual."

Thank you very much, this was just the sort of thing I have been looking for, without any notable success.

-Cheers

Glad to have been of help. I've gotten a lot of good info here, so I like to put some back in when I can. ;)

I have been recently re-united with my Model 37 featherlight which I think I purchased in 1969, but according to some of the posts, it appears that it may be older than that, so I would like to find out its date of manufacture, and approx worht, since it has been in storage for over 24 years, and befor that shot maybe 150 rounds, so it is like new. Would also like to see if the barrel is interchangeable, which I doubt. Serial number is 3711666XX.

Thanks!

It was made in 1970, barrels are interchangeable (anything after serial number 855,000) and could be worth anywhere from $250 to $400, depending on what type it is, condition and your geographical location.

Would be interested in finding out the year of production for serial# 743150-4 and a possible estimated price.

Built in 1959, and with nothing but a model and date-of-birth there's now way to make an educated guess about it's value. Could be anywhere from $50 to $5000, depending on condition, options and rarity.

Assuming you didn't actually buff off the serial number in the first place, I'll bet what you have is a "pre-855,00" serial numbered gun. You'll find the serial number in two separate places:

1) On the receiver. Look on the front face of the receiver, on the right side. It will be there.

2) On the barrel. Pre-855,000 guns (which is what yours would be if it truly is a 1962 model) have barrels that are fitted to each individual receiver so they are serial numbered to match the number on the receiver. The serial number on the barrel is located on the right side, over the area where the chamber is. It will be the same as the serial number on the receiver, but will be followed by a "dash number". This dash number indicates the choke that was in the barrel when it left the factory. For instance, if the serial number on the receiver is 805372, the barrel will be marked 805372-x, with the "x" being a digit from 0 to 5, depending on how the barrel was choked.

OK. I found a number on the front, right hand side of the reciever. It is 124109. There are no other numbers after those six. Thanks.

This was given to me about 3 weeks ago along with a Marlin 336, Ithaca Saddlegun and a Savage Model 7. She's missing her front bead, ordered a new one from Numrich but it was too small. Have to see about getting the numbers off it when I get home

Doh, sorry forgot I posted in this thread (I still haven't gotten in the habit of checking the shotgun forum regularly like General, Legal, and Rifle)

Anyhow, number on the bottom is 955761.

Also, don't know if anyone can help on this part but here goes, Ordered a replacement bead sight from Numrich, doesn't fit, hole is slightly bigger. I did a rudimentary measurement with my Frankford Arsenal Caliper and got these numbers:

Bead thread width (Extreme edges of the threads) .109 and a half inches.

Hole size on the barrel: .117 inches

I don't know of any places that allow you to order replacement front beads by diameter, just model size, anyone have any insight? lol

Hey, great site glad I found ya...old man next door gave me a 16 ga 37R with the serial 35113...she's rough, but I love her :D just wondering when she came to be.

Thank you kindly Talon, he told me it was old, but he's 88 so he couldn't say how old. My youngest son (4) is a lefty and looks like this may be just what he'll need. The stock is missing a chunk where it meets the back of the reciever and 67 years in South Louisiana has left a little light rust; but mechanically she's running like a sewing machine. Thanks again for the info...

Thanks Black Talon I appreciate the help you provided.Does the flying red phesant signify anything? Most Ithaca's I have seen, just have Ithaca written in that spot.Tks again Tom

That's a Sid Bell grip cap, but the pheasant ones were used on non-Deerslayer guns. The Deerslayers had a "deer" Sid Bell grip cap. I'd guess either the stock or the barrel is not original to that gun, but I seriously doubt that you could ever figure out which.

Model 37 Questions

Hi all, just bought a model 37 and while searching for info found this web site. After reading most of this thread I have a few questions.First is the serial number A1269 which according to the link on this thread except for the A would make it an 1937 DOB? The number is on the right side above the trigger instead of the front near the barrel as described in earlier posts. The barrel also has no serial number, it's marked MOD onthe laft and has a 2 on the right. There is an Eagle engraved on both sides. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Don't have my serial number list in front of me right now, but, AFAIK, the letter "A" was never used as a prefix for any M37 serial number. Maybe a pic of the serial number would help.

Had to look that one up. :)

It's a limited edition version called the "Americana Model". 2200 of them were made in 1972, and were serialized "A0001" though "A2200". This was the first special serial number sequence that Ithaca ever used, but not the last.

These were only issued in blue finish, but your pic (maybe due to the lighting/flash?) makes it look like it's been plated, and that it's been on a belt sander on each side of the receiver. It should also have a 28", vent-rib, MOD barrel on it, and yours definitely doesn't have the vent rib.
