Model 37 questions

Black Talon, thanks for the information! The reciever looks like that because someone in the past roughed it up pretty good all over and I am in the process of slicking it up a little to reblue it. The barrel was a 28" plain and it was also damaged on the end now it's 18.25. I gave $75 for it with the intention of making a house gun out of it. Agin thanks.

Pair of 37s

This is my first THR post. I have lurked a lot and always found great information.

I have two 37's. A featherweight 16 ga. with a 28 in bbl and full choke. The sn is 7912xx. Looking at BT's previous answers I think it that was made in 1961. This was my dad's hunting gun, and though I can't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside with it and the finish is all but gone, I will never part with it. It was dad's.

The second belonged to my maternal grandfather. SN 487xx. I think that puts it in 1941. I love the fact that this one is marked "United States Property" on the bbl and the receiver, but it is not a riot gun. This has the roll marked reciever with nice wood and a blued finish. A 30 in. bbl (with matching SN) and a full choke.

My dad has the receipt for it somewhere showing my grandpa bought it at the end of WWII from the government. My grandpa left the army after the war ended as a major. He was a quartermaster and stationed stateside. The gun was in the armory of a midwest base that held POWs, but not as a guard weapon. There were a few like that the men used for bird hunting when off duty. This one will also go to my kids, but I am curious if anyone has an idea of what it would be worth. My dad had it reblued at one time so the finish is not original.

These guns have a wonderful action, but I haven't shot either in about 10 years. I will remedy that soon.

ithaca model and DOB ?

I'm new to the forum, but have read most of the posts about ithaca shotguns.
I just recently found a dbl barrel shotgun in my dumpster. It's in very bad shape but all the #'s are legible. The S/N is 137xx. Why are there 3 pat. dates? May 25, 1880 - June 1,1880 - Sept. 13, 1887

Welcome to the forum, Wildwalt. Three patent dates means three patents.

What you have almost certainly is a shotgun shaped artifact. It's not built for modern ammo, has a century of neglect behind it and is best left as a decoration.

HTH....

Thanks Dave for the welcome. I had no intentions of ever shooting it, but I'm going to have it fixed up and hung over the fireplace. Any idea on the age and what model it is?

Ithaca started making shotguns in the 1880s. There were various models, mostly named after the designer. There was the Lewes, and the Flues, among others.

Their New Ithaca Double started in 1926. That's the only one I'd recommend for shooting.

I stopped in a local gun shop last week and the owner had a 16 guage Ithaca pump he had just bought from an estate sale. It is a model 37, made in Ithaca, has proof tested stamped on the barrel, and does not have a serial # shown anywhere. The shop owner thought it was made in 1937. Any ideas anyone?

All M37s have serial numbers on them. The pre 855,00 serial numbers are found on the front right-hand side of the receiver and the same matching serial number should also appear on the right side of the barrel, over the chamber area.

Serial # 136241

I have a Model 37 with matching barrel and receiver serial # of 136241. Can someone help me date this?

Thanks

Here's two pics of my 1949 Mod 37, showing the serial locations...

Ithaca Gun 37R manufacture datequestion

I obtained Ithaca Gun 37R Featherlight Serial Number 559334-4 from my father-in-law. (Alzheimer's :( ) Black Talon, could you tell me what year was this gun made?

to ANTIXOGH (re: serial on the receiver is 4898xx)
That puts your M37 produced in 1952

to BrushRoad (re: Serial Number 559334)
That puts you in 1955

This looks like the place to find the date of mfg for a model 37.
I just picked up a nice looking 16ga model 37 - Sn 4652xx .
Thanks for any info.

Model 37

Could someone please let me know what year was my model 37 12 gauge was manufractured. SN: 371640190 and approximate value in good condition?

I came across a breech-oading, single-barrel vent rib Ithaca shortgun with nice engraving and serial number 403XXX. There is no model number stamped anywhere. I was wondering if somebody could let me know the model, year manufactured, and its approximate value in good condition?

Thanks,

Curious about keepsake

As a teenage (around 1975) my dad and I bought matching Ithica 37 shotguns at Kmart with interchangeable barrels. After leaving home I put it away and have not fired more that 1 box of shells . It means a lot because It was purchased by my mowing lawns etc. I heard the interchangeable barrel is rare now because someone stole my deer slayer barrel. Could someone point me to a place to research this gun further?
The serial # 371386771

Your gun was built in 1974 and any barrel from a post-855,000 serial numbered gun will fit it.

The best source of info on the M37 is Walt Snyders' book "Ithaca Featherlight Repeaters" (amazon et. al.). The second-best source (by quite a large margin, IMHO) is the internet. This forum and the Ithaca forums at shotgunworld.com is probably about the best internet source.

I have a 16 ga Featherlight with a Serial # of 599061. Can someone tell me the year it was made? Thanks!
