I probably do that too much.

See, I'm a college student. If you read my "list" thread, you'll find I have some rather eclectic tastes in firearms. I'll never be able to afford all of the guns on the list, of course (well, maybe once I finish law school and start bringing in the money).

I've got this idea in my head, that if I find the PERFECT set of guns, I'll be happy with them and can spend my "gun money" on ammo, magazines, spare parts, accessories, and training. Sounds frugal, yes, but I've got college soaking up a lot of my money here. So frugality would be wise. At least until I'm out of school, have a career going, steady paycheck, etc.

I figure I could find one perfect rifle (.308 semiauto that can do it all), one perfect shotgun (thinking 18" Remington 870 with ghost ring sights) and maybe two or three handguns, possibly all in the same caliber (which would likely be .357 Magnum, as it's probably the most versatile).

Here's the problem. I've got a substantial amount of money invested in the guns I own, especially the FAL. I don't dislike any of my guns by a long shot. And some guns, like my 25-5, are so hard to find it seems that I don't know if I could possibly part with it.

On the other hand, none of the guns I have are the "ideal". My rifle is a DSA STG58A FAL; I love it, but after shooting one I think I like the M1A more. My shotgun is a Norinco pump with ghost ring sights that I picked up on the cheap, as a temp until I can afford something REALLY nice. My two handguns are both large; the 25-5 with its 6" barrel is unsuited to carry, and the CZ-97 is hard to find holsters for (it's heavy, too).

What do I imagine my "ideal" gun collection for my frugal college years to be?

-Springfield M1A Bush Rifle, 18"+flash hider, with black synthetic stock. 20-30x twenty round GI magazines, and ten or so five and ten round magazines. Scope mount and some kind of well made optic for it.

-Remington 870 Police 18", with 7 round tube. Ghost ring sights, reversed Big Head safety (lefty), heat shield, parkerized finish.

-Ruger KGP160 6" half underlug or 4" full, stainless. Field Revolver.

-Ruger KGP4-341 4" stainless, short underlug, fixed sights, slightly smaller grip. General purpose defensive gun.

-Ruger KSP-331X, 3" stainless 5-shot SP101. Maybe I'd get the hammer bobbed for better carry.

-MAYBE a Ruger Vaquero or Blackhawk, just for fun.

-Maybe a .22 Pistol just for cheap plinking. I've been meaning to get one anyway.

And those six or seven guns would cover everything I could possibly need out of a gun. Heck, they'd do stuff I probably will never need guns to do. I don't hunt, but I could. A .308 M1A bush rifle, with a 5-round hunting mag, could take any game in the lower 48. I could take deer with the GP100. I could defend myself from bear with the shotgun and some 3" magnum slugs. I could carry concealed easily with the two smaller revolvers.

So, what do you think? Should I focus on just getting that small collection and being happy with it? Should I sell things that I have to get there? (Sell the FAL? The CZ-97?) I've gone through over 20 guns in the few years I've been able to buy them, hashing out my tastes, finding what I like and don't like. It's been an expensive process, and I've wasted money that would've been better spent on other things. But, I've learned some stuff...I learned that I prefer .308 rifles over intermediate ones. I learned that I like revolvers after all.

Just looking for advice. Don't know why I've got this thing about minimizing and ammo compatibility...my dad spent many years as a logistician by trade; maybe it rubbed off. :uhoh:

Never settle

Keep the guns you have and strive to fill in your list, you'll never be happy trying to settle on a small set of guns.

You're probably right. I can almost see parting with my FAL...almost...if I were getting a nice M1A instead.

But my CZ-97? My 25-5?

I don't think I have the heart.

But still. I don't get to go shooting that often. If I have a huge collection of guns, most of them wont' get shot.

I have different rules about trading out a gun based on ease of replacement.

Someone wants one of my Glocks in trade? Fine! Not a problem! They uncrate hundreds every day in Smyrna; I'll get another one just like it later.

Your S&W 25-5? What are the odds of finding another in as good shape for as good a price? They have kinda stopped making those, ya know. :scrutiny:

Tamara raises a good point about replacement. Even though I could always buy another CZ-97, I like having a .45 automatic. But it leads to complications.

Having one .45 automatic, full sized, means I have to get another, a compact.

THe 25-5 leads to OTHER .45 Colt revolvers. Redhawk. Vaquero. Taurus 450.

Doesn't matter, though. I couldn't bare to let the 25-5 go. I'd hate myself.

I think maybe you guys are right. I should just build from what I have. Screw having a nice, well-ordered little collection, with every gun filling a specific niche. BLAH! How boring is that?

Call it a slight adjustment and get the ones you really want & have more enjoyment shooting...but keep the 25-5, k ? :scrutiny:

Don't sell anything to buy a different one. Buy whats on the list when you can afford it, then when you have both you can shoot em awhile and see if you only want to keep one or both. And keep in mind how hard it is to find some of the stuff you already have.

Don't you folks worry, that 25-5 ain't going anywhere. I was thinking about that this morning in Psychology class, the idea of selling my 25-5.

Broke my heart. So, ain't no way. I AM probably going to get it refinished....doens't really need it, but I don't like blueing on a field gun. Sure, it looks pretty, but it's like you don't want to touch it because you leave fingerprints. I think I'll send it to ARS and have them do a METACOL III Satin Black finish, along with mild dehorning. IT was only $300 to begin with, and I'm NEVER going to part with it, so I don't worry about depreciating the value.

I'm the same way.

I figure with two rifles that take the same magazines, a quality shotgun, (my M1 Super 90), and 4 handguns, two as range/beaters, and two for carry/backup, I'll be set?

My collection is thinning out and I only have 6 guns.

Listen to me.....

Do not sell your guns, for if you do, it will haunt you for the rest of your days.

I have read far too many stories of people selling guns, only to live to regret it.

Keep the guns you now have.

Buy more to complement the ones you now have.

All will be well.

Some guns are easily replaced. For instance, I have a 5906 I would sell or trade. Make me an offer. I'm a reasonable guy. On the other hand, I have some others that I coveted for far too long to part with easily. Some others I bought on a whim, and discovered I really like to shoot them.

Most of these, curiously enough, I bought NIB. For too much money. When no one else had one. Now, some are common as dirt, and can be bought, used, in the same shape mine are in, for less money. Some are still rarely seen, because nobody else liked them enough to pay horrendous amounts of money, or they're just odd. (shrug).

I guess what I'm saying is, most I wouldn't sell. One or two, yeah, if someone offered enough to let me replace them in not too negative a way (cash-wise). Like the 5906. An under-rated gun. But heavy, and hard to conceal. About average in accuracy, but mine is rock-solid reliable. Won't compare to a Sig, or HK, or Browning, certainly. Better, IMO, than any Beretta, and many other lesser guns. Believe it or not, I wouldn't trade it for a Glock, because I traded a Glock to get it. But at the price they (59xx guns) can be had for, they aren't bad deals at all, if you like full-cap, no-plastic (ex. grips), 9mm blasters. The only reason I would consider trading it, is there's something out there I want even more than I want to keep it.

My rule is, if I don't shoot it in five years, it's trade/sales bait. But only if I intend to replace it with something else, if it's the only example of that caliber I have. (I try to keep something around in 'common' calibers, just because). But sell or trade intelligently. Only with a purpose, and don't waver. Trade or sell for something, not just to get rid of something.

While I'm a poor college student (and after this May, a poor entry-level Forest Service employee), I'm gonna spend my money on the economical, one gun/many uses type firearms. I plan to get a NEF Ultra Varmint (~$200-250), and barrels to fire different calibers go for ~$80/ea. Figure get a .223, a .243, and maybe a .308 barrel. Also gonna get a 10/22 that I can upgrade later. Then, as I get more money, I'll be able to afford some of the higher-priced toys.

the accurate guns always win out

My collection has changed over the past couple years, however, I have found that any gun I own that is extremely accurate never seems to get sold. So from my personal expierence if you can brag on your and your guns ability to shoot well, you will keep it.
