This is intended to pick up where JustSayMo left off, but I missed December. Some of y'all may or may not remember me; that's not important. I haven't seen anyone step up to oversee / sponsor / initiate the matches since 'Mo has temporarily stepped away. I've been in email contact with 'Mo, and he has other things to do than "run" the match month after month, year after year. (Can't blame him.)

Not saying no one has volunteered, just that I haven't seen it yet. If so, I'll stand corrected and go back to sleep.

So... here we go. Simple rules, simple format.

Any rimfire rifle, any sights including glass. Specify make and model for me, caliber, ammo used and shooting position. Easy enough?

Now, for targets... are you ready? I'm not. Haven't picked one yet. Stay tuned.

Our last scorer found more and more complexity creeping in. So, for this contest, I'm not inclined to score / grade / judge any pistol or revolver, any BB gun or airgun or pellet gun, or any centerfire cartridge nor any mortars, bazookas, claymores or grenades. I'm trying to keep it simple, so I can stick to my commitment to 'Mo and to you. Hey, it's New Year's. Ya gotta start somewhere.

I have nothing against handguns or centerfire rifles. I have some of all of that... if you want to compete with these firearms, more power to you. I might even participate, if you start your own match.

For our purposes here, I'm sticking with rimfires, and I really wanted to limit that to .22 but I'm trying to be flexible. (Actually I was going to limit it to Marlin 39A or 39M, but had a change of heart.) Notice, I'm not trying too hard. Don't want to strain myself. :neener:

I know, I know... you don't have a target to get started with RIGHT NOW! I know some of you are mad at me already. I'll deal with that. And I will have a target for you soon. Promise. :D

Love,

Yikes!!!

Been gone awhile.

Mo - thx for all your time and effort!!

Sadlsor - you da man!!

Now... maybe a Feb match??

Make it a feb match. If we can't come up with targets, how bout a sheet of paper, with anything on it you want? As long as it is a 8.5x11 sheet....?

How 'bout this:

White sheet of copier-stype paper.

.22 rifle of choice

25 yards/optics (includes dots); 15 yards/iron sights.

Shoot one round into the paper. This is your bull.

Shoot string of 5. Closest/tightest group (will be a group of 6) wins.

Targets don't get any easier.

Q

I am so excited! Rimfires rule. .17&.22

I can't wait, if this gets started I am so in. If I can help in anyway to get this going let me know.

Quoheleth-- Some of us have a scope that is paralex set at 50yd, so 25yd would screw up our scores. And i have no .22 with orons....:uhoh: So maybe just a markering on the paper or something....?

Im in for a FEB match! However, i dont have a 22 with irons either. Why dont we just do a 50 yard competition?

Run what ya brung :D

how bout rubbing a crayon over a quarter on some printer paper....for a way to scale the size of the target...and you can color in as needed to see if using open sights....maybe a 50 and 100 yd division
does 22mag count?
do the holes have to be in the bulls eye or does group size count?....and how about like what was done with the centerfire rifles you use two targets on the same page to show you are not jus lucky!!
they also used a standard printout of two targets on the same page to help rule out and targets from before the match.

Okay, my opinion on targets (i have done some checking on stuff and so on bla bla bla) is a peice of paper, with any kind of inch (or so) size dot for 50yd scoped rifles, and any size/type for (15 or 25yd range) iron sighted rifles. I think this will allow pretty much any rifle to be used, paralex and crosshair size considered. 1858--i think that 100yd might be pushing it for some, and some don't have that range. Espically in this weather. But if someone wants to use a .17HMR (NOT Mach II) (scoped) then it should be at 100 if possible. I am going skiing tomorrow for three days, so if it is a jan date...i am out.

Any other thoughts on range and target types?

wanna copy and use the target from the other thread and all participants print it out for this match? im cool with 50 yds an i got see thru rings so i can do iron sights too! feb is fine i was kiddin...im way eager an will get a bok of ammo tomorrow to practice some....i may use some of my WRF .22 for only papre punching at 50yds though

attachment.php

this was the example target....but still the same idea...2 targets on one page to show consistency better?

heres the link to the old thread http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=375454

I was just tossing an idea out. I've done that before with pistols after reading an old Skeeter Skelton story. He talked about how difficult it was, and lemme tell you: it's tough. White, bull-less paper with only a single .22 hole (also done with .38 and .45ACP) for a target??? Try it some time.

That all said, I'm in for whatever is decided.

Someone (on another thread) suggested a stick match...that might be fun with .22s...an idea for a future match.

Q

1858--Thats an idea. I am not sure if corsshairs on lower power scopes will cover it, but if needed, one could just put some marker on it, no?

Q--What is a "stick match"?

Any other opinions???

kitchen match.....splint of pine with a little red...sometimes red and white tip from some combination of sulfur , phosphorus , and maybe potassium-something or other.

i have heard of people striking matches(strike anywhere kind) with a .22, unknown range and i never witnessed it but neat idea still

25, 50 and 100 yard match sounds fun. Lets decide on a target. Scope, no scope, blindfolded........LETS GET IT ON!

Well, i have all that minus the phosphorus, but was that a joke? The "match" idea is cool too:D

Lets get some more opinions on targets here! I have to leave to before mentioned ski trip really soon (a hour or so), so you guys will get do decide without me.....:( :D

Different "trophys" for different ranges sounds like a good idea too.

Stick match

Stick match:
http://s3.excoboard.com/exco/thread.php?forumid=53565&threadid=535873

Basically, all participants agree on the size of the "stick" - can be a 2x4, 2x2, 4x4, etc. - and distance. Drive an end into the ground (with safe backstop) and see how many shots to cut the stick in two.

When I was a kid, we did it with cedar fence posts. Of course, I had to replace the posts I shot off, but it was fun (the shooting - not the replacing).

It has nothing to do with matches, although I guess the game could be adapted...take a paint stirring stick and paint the top (from the grooves) red. Whoever shoots the red off w/fewest shots wins.
