JC Higgins bolt guns.

I was out pawn shopping today and found a pair of JC Higgins shotguns. A 12 gauge 583.1101 and a 20 gauge 583.22. I can't seem to find a definitive answer if these were recalled, but it seems as long as the bolt locking screw is present and in good shape I'm safe to shoot. Is that likely true?
Both are in great shape and the 12 has great wood grain patterns. For under $200 out the door for the pair, it was too good to pass.

Yes, true.

The shotguns recalled carried under a number of product numbers: 583.13, 583.14, 583.15, 583.16, 583.17, 583.18, 583.19, 583.20, 583.21 and 583.22.

As long as the bolt stop screw is in good condition, and tight, I would not be too concerned about it.

I have the model 583.21 in a 16ga it was my grandfather first gun. I don't shoot it much to me it kicks like a mule but its always been a good gun. I remember reading it was only the 12ga that was recalled I'm not sure about it tho

Was following a couple of these on Gunbroker last week...after I found a stash of 16 ga. shells in my Dad's basement.

Wasn't aware of any recall. Finally gave the shells to a friend who has a 16.

My first shotgun was a 12 gauge J. C. Higgins that was passed down to me from my grandfather to my dad then to me. It was a very good gun and held a tight pattern. So tight that it was banned from three different turkey shoots I went to for blowing huge holes in their targets. I wish I still had it but it was one of the guns that was stolen years ago when the old house was broken into and has never been recovered.
