One of my co-workers here in Taiwan is a Chicago native.

During our chinese new years dinner, he was preaching "I'm a Democrat.. I'd die before I'd vote any other way. It's the right way. Those Republicans all they want to do is cut taxes to make the rich richer.."

(Twoblink) "So what are you doing here in Taiwan then??"

"To get away from the high taxes that is Chicago.."

???:banghead:

~~~~~~Session Two ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Twoblink) "What about guns?"
"I find guns of absolutely no use. The only time you would need a gun is to protect yourself."
(Let me translate that for you slow math folks. He means protecting yourself is of absolutely no use..)
:banghead: :banghead: :cuss:
Jeff, next time you are in Chicago, tell them their village idiot is here in Taiwan :cuss:
Someone in Chicago owes me a whole lot of Aspirin...:banghead:
twoblink,
I haven't been to Chicago in over a year, that was for business. I can't think of any reason to go there, even to visit my relatives who live in Niles (Chicago suburb).
I don't know why your friend is working in Taiwan when he has such a bright future in Chicago politics. Probably raising mmoney to buy himself a position in one of the wards when he goes home......
Chicago politics in a nutshell
20 years in the city, now in another county (Will) and another world.
True story:
In 1926 "Bathhouse John Coughlin" and "Hinky Dink McKenna", two of the finest Chciago aldermen money could buy at that, or any other time, had their offices in a local saloon on the near West side, out at about 600 West Madison.
As was the custom in that time, it was of course also the local polling place for residents, both living and dead, to vote early and often.
A young man came to the saloon and asked Bathhouse John for a job in the ward.
Mr Coughlin asked him "Who sent ya?"
The man replied that no one had sent him he just wanted a job with the city and would work doing anything.
McKenna, the brains of the two, looked him up and down and said; "Get the hell out of here kid, we don't want nobody that nobody sent."
City still runs the same way. Who do you know.
If you are, or work for, an aldercritter you can still get a handgun permit. Property taxes just jumped up over 150% in some areas of the city last week and the people are stunned.
Who the hell did they think was going to pay for Millenium Park, the Soldier Field debacle and the new park for his wife where Meigs field used to be?
Glad to be gone.
Don P.
Just remember that Chicago has strict gun laws due to Richard Daley the beloved Mayor. He disarms the citizens because as a criminal he prefers unarmed victims.
Hoping not to intentionally offend any citizens of Chicago .. but it, like a few other places ... has long struck me as a ''country that should not be in this country'' ... if ya know what I mean.
EW! Did you get any on you?
Yeah... Where be the PowderBlast! and Hoppe's #9 to get this crud off of me?
Where do I go to get reimbursed for the braincells I lost speaking to him?
The fact that he comes to work drunk half the time doesn't really surprise me either..
He's so liberal, he think's Oprah is way to his right :uhoh:
Fro..
I just love passing through Berkeley... you can almost feel the Liberalism removing your car paint...:rolleyes:
DonP,
The republicans ran state hiring the same way for 30 years. It's not just a democratic disease. Only they were a bit more upfront about it. State jobs were just sold. Yes, sold, as in make a contribution and get a job. Some jobs even had set prices. Chair of the county repulican party down here wiggled out of a conviction but one of his aides took the fall a few years back.
Actually, handguns were banned in the 80s, well before Dick Daley ever came into office.
The state of gun laws in Chicago is pretty terrible.
To those who live in Chicago, how does it work, do most gun owners just ignore the laws and keep their handguns unregistered (Since the crime of having an unregistered firearm in Chicago is only a misdemenor) and keep quiet about it?
Jeff,
I've met some "escapees" in Vegas that were from the People's Republik of Chicago..
and as I recall, as far as the voting booths go, depending on what color envelope you got; usually the envelope tells you what days to go vote at (yes, days, as in more than 1 day) and inside, the voting card is filled out for you; as they don't really trust you with actually filling out the card yourself.
The running joke was, "I'm from Chicago, shouldn't these voter ballots be filled in already?? I've never had to fill one out and I've voted the last 20 years!" :rolleyes:
Fro.. If I swing by, I'll PM ya.. If I bring a girl, you're paying for range time. If I bring two, then you can make QuarterBoreGunner pay :neener:
Interesting on that point.
I'm sure you all think i'm crazy, but sooner or later I plan on living in Chicago (I live just across the border in WI right now).
Aside from corrupt politics and inane laws it's a great city.
-20 in winter
+120 in summer
15 minutes of nice weather on spring and autumn equinox, if it isn't raining.
Can you say "Forsaken by god?" :neener: :neener: :neener:
Like I said, I live an hour north of the city. The weather here is exactly the same, which of course since i've lived here my entire life is what i'm used to.
Bzzzt! Wrong! The handgun ban was set in motion during the reign of Dick Daley. That's Richard J. Daley, the father of the current mayor. (Look at his name - Richard. He was a Dick, too.) Handguns couldn't be sold in the city for many decades, but there was no law against buying one OUTSIDE the city limits. Then Chicago passed a registration law, and made possession of an unregistered handgun a crime. (Except, criminals were exempt. Requiring them to register something they're not allowed to have would be a 5th Amendment violation.) Then . . . Chicago stopped registering handguns. Bingo - de facto ban.
Compliance with the myriad of Chicago gun laws, especially among Indiana natives who grew up shooting, was minimal
Among Chicago natives, too. Trust me on this. ;)
Hey . . . I'm a Chicago native . . . but at least I got out of that loathesome, misbegotten, pestilential hellhole as soon as I could, so just don't paint with TOO broad a brush! (BTW, I went there on business not too long ago. My old neighborhood - which was pretty nice until I left in the '70's - now looks like the barrio. :( )
Republicans/Democrats - same-same in Illinois
Yup,
The Republicans are close to tied with the Democrats for the most governors sent to prison in the last 50 years I think.
I have suggested several times that the official state motto for the governors office be changed from; "The Land of Lincoln" to "Will the defendant please rise and face the jury".
But so far none of the politicians seem interested.
