Jerry Miculek on the md19 Classic

I don't think Kay is sponsored by them currently, could be wrong.

I really like the looks of both guns. That Carry Comp is calling out to me...
I watched the recoil of both in the video and that compensator does appear to make a difference.

I did email S&W a couple of weeks ago and asked them about these revolvers and shooting a steady diet of .357 and they said the 19 Classic is built to handle it.

To give folks an idea of the strength of the 19’s that doubt the claim that these guns are as strong as the old L and N frames. I have a model 60 Pro, J frame, .357 magnum. When I bought it I called S&W and asked if that little gun can handle a steady diet of .357. The gent that I talked to said “If you can handle it, it can handle it”. I have no doubts about the 19 Classic and their strength claims.

Where is the flaming toward JM?

C'mon guys!!....call him out !

I've said it before - not taking anything away from his incredible skill, but JM developed himself as his own brand. His videos, often ostensibly lessons in how to shoot, are really just adverts for his brand rather than anything instructional. Learn what you can from his videos then, but don't take anything he says or does as gospel. Do your own research.

I have a feeling, just a feeling mind you, not even really a hunch, certainly not a strong suspicion, that any handgun S&W ships to a Mr. Jerry Miculek might just get a slightly more through per-shipping checkup.

I seriously doubt that the people who answer the phones at S&W are either competent enough to give you an accurate assessment of the new 19's strength, or able for employment reasons to say "Well.....maybe y'oughta hold back some on the magnum loads...." :)

I have no doubt the forcing cone IS stronger, but as I said- the K-Frame still has its limitations.

This is what I got from S&W in an email regarding my initial inquiry about the Model 19 Classic on their website:

Dear Tom,

The firearm is chambered for .357 magnum and is safe to use in the firearm.

We only recommend using SAAMI approved factory ammunition in our firearms. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) is an association of the nation's leading manufacturers of firearms, ammunition and components.

If you are unsure if the ammunition you are using is SAAMI Spec contact the ammo manufacturer.

If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us

Thank you and Have a Great Day!

Smith&Wesson values its customers and we are happy to have served you today. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require further assistance.

Regards, Richard

This is what I asked on their website:

“I am interested in a new Model 19 Classic. On older model 19s there was a concern about firing too many factory .356 Magnum loads and damaging the forcing cone or stretching the frame. Is that a concern with the new Classic Model 19?”

I think they might know what their guns can handle. They also have a lifetime warranty if they can’t.

See my earlier post on the people who answer the phones, by which I stand.
They are neither fully informed nor free to insert opinions beyond the generic company line.

If the above is what their canned response was to the question you outlined above, that's not an answer to your question at all.

Of course they won't give you any specifics on strength or longevity, they never have.
Denis

If they made a modern version of this 6" from 1975, with their fancy barrel but without the lock and MIM, I'd be interested:

I respect and admire Mr. Miculek's abilities with revolvers, but don't share his tastes, I guess. The handgun above is absolutely my #1 shooter in the revolver subset. I have prettier ones and fancier ones and most of them were more expensive than the 19, but I doubt anything will ever knock it out of its personal ranking.

Pat,
I would expect them to say exactly what they did say, but I would not have wasted my time in asking, so my expectations are irrelevant.

What did YOU expect when you asked?
Why did YOU bother?

That's their basic canned response & answers exactly nothing.
But- at least you did make Richard happy to have "served" you.

It's the same in the car biz- don't ever expect to get a straight answer about specifications, maintenance intervals, or durability issues from anyone in Sales, Consumer Affairs, or Service. The ones who actually know the answers you seek are smart enough to keep their mouths shut.

You want to know if a car or gun is reliable- ask a technician. They aren't trained to lie to your face and don't get paid to care about whether you actually buy a certain product or not. The manufacturer I work for builds some outstandingly reliable cars and some real lemons, and the techs know which to buy and which to avoid.

Don't know how easy it is to get a S&W tech on the phone, but I would love to ask him if he would buy a new M19........

Which one would you consider JM?

A tech....or a salesman?

Neither? A sponsored spokesman kind of figure with alot if influece and invested interests in the company ? Kinda like asking jack roush about the new ford Ford mustang.

He customizes them.

I'm sure as a salesman of said customazations , he would point out the limitations of a stock GT.

I suspect the following:

"Dear S&W, I'm trying to decide which .357 Magnum is stronger, the 19 or the 27. Help?"
Dear Tom, All of our .357 Magnum revolvers are safe to shoot with .357 Magnum ammunition.

Dear Tom, All of our .357 Magnum revolvers...…..

Lol

I'm not disputing the 19 is a strong as the 27.

But

JM said the new Classic series (K frame 357's) is better built than ever before.

I'm sure a 357 mag out of a 4in K frame will kill an alien just as well as a 357 mag from a 4in N frame.....now if you have to shoot 10,000 aliens.......that's different

In regards to the other things he said;

"As strong as an N frame"

Stoning MIM parts

Smith introduting SS guns "30 years ago"

?

Pretty sure he would need a flamesuit if he stated that here anonymously
