It is with great sorrow that I announce the death of Jim Cirillo, former NYPD stakeout unit officer, shooter, instructor, author and respected member of our family. He died last night in a traffic accident.

I have had the chance to work and talk with Jim Cirillo. He was a genuine and warm individual who was dedicated to seeing the good guys dominate the fight. I learned a lot from him.

My SHOT Shows will not be the same with out him. He was a legend in our community, the geniune article, a straight talker and a hell of a great guy.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family.

May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord cause his face to shine upon you and give you peace.

Mr. Cirillo was my firearms instructor at the Customs academy in 1988. We were on good terms and were briefly friends. To my regret, I haven't seen him since. He was a genuinely cheerful man and very warm and gracious. He always struck me as someone's Italian grandfather.

On the other hand, in his work as a NYC cop, he shot more people than most of us don't like. He was competent and knew how to compartmentalize his life; he could deal with violence and not let it overwhelm him.

Another one of the old ones who learned lessons the hard way is gone. All of us who carry guns is lessened to some degree, and the sheep - who know no better - have lost a protector.

We here in West Michigan lost a fine young Grand Rapids Police officer (my former department), age 29, Sunday past. Robert Kozminski. He was shot down in ambush by a coward. We buried him today.

He will be in good company with Jim Cirillo. RIP to you both.
