In lieu of purchasing a quality safe which is too heavy to move, or a crappy safe which offers little, if any, protection in a garage full of tools. I was thinking about purchasing job box - the type you see at construction sites and marinas, flipping it on it's end and using it as my new gun safe.

Does anyone else use a job box for this purpose, and have any suggestions or recommendations?

This is along the lines of what I am thinking of:

job boxes are made to be moved... so im not too sure how great they would be in the end. it'll stop a smash and grab but so will a gunlocker.

not to mention they arent fireproof

We use two of them in our hunting shed(sea container) welded to the walls to hold stuff while in the field. When closed they make great reloading benches.

IMO, it would certainly be better than nothing. But you'd definitely need to set anchors in the concrete floor and bolt it down! I believe I'd leave it in its normal horizontal position too, if for no other reason than to give the impression it just has tools in it. And don't leave any tools in the garage that could be used against the box.

There are a ton of threads about this same topic out on the internet. I read a bunch before deciding to just get a standard safe. There's enough big box stores selling safes for reasonable prices that the Job Box is only a good solution for a narrow set of requirements. In addition, there's enough stories of people breaking into job boxes to convince me that they aren't any more secure than a low end safe.

In the end, no one strategy can keep the contents secure but the following are additive:
-Buy a good safe and bolt it down
-Get active in the community to help reduce or report crime
-Get an alarm for the house
-Buy insurance

In my opinion, this is a cheap solution with a costly ending ! Look around, there are many LGS that have safes, might seem expensive in the short term, but when you open the garage door and find the boxes door swinging…. then the heartache begins. Do more homework pal !

I was thinking of buying one for my ammo, i have a good safe for my guns.
