Because it was a movie. I actually wondered that too; more importantly, why did he bother to murmur "smart girl" when that raptor thrust its head through the brush at him?

Actually he said, "Clever girl" before getting chomped.;)

If we are venturing into fantasy land land I want the BIG MO. Anything else is just silly.

The Jurassic Park III gun was called an "Einhorn" 20mm by one of the mercenaries (the pilot, who ended up eaten by Spinosaurus aegypticus). I didn't get a good look at it, but maybe it was a Lahti or Solothurn or something.

45/70 +P+ with Garret 500 grain tungsten solids. Through and through on a T-Rex skull.

It's funny, in the JP movie, Muldoon had the Spas 12. Not bad, particularly for a shotgun, but not my personal choice of weaponry. In the JP book, he was actually using a LAW rocket launcher. They had tranq rockets earlier on in the book to hit the Rex with, and he grabbed the HE from the gun cabinet after the SHTF.
Crichton apparently knows nothing about LAW rockets, or he'd know it's a one-time use launcher. Description wise, it fits the LAW to a T, being described as a compact tube (duh). Function wise, it seems similar to the SMAW, or maybe the IMI made "Shipon", capable of being loaded with different types of rockets.
