I was just wondering how many of you guys have a wife that carries. My wife is about to graduate to "big gun" status and probably get a sub compact XD in .40 cal. She will use it for a CCW. She hadn't fired a pistol when we got married, at least not to my knowledge. I started her off with a Walther P22 jam-o-matic and we have slooooowly worked her up to larger calibers and to a comfort level where she now "feels safe" carrying on a daily basis. She will probably carry the .40 in her purse and have a NAA Mini Revolver in her pocket (she loves those things)

Anyway I got to wondering how many women out there carry, around here in rural AL almost every man carries (at least in his vehicle) but I don't know about the women. I know THR is made up of of mostly men so I figured I'd ask about the wives.

So does your wife carry?

I would also be curious to find out what caliber most women carry if your wife does carry. It was very important to me to get her up to a larger caliber, I am proud of her for sticking with it and stopping at a .32 or 9mm, she made it to a .40

My girlfriend (long-time, serious, almost-wife) carries an old H&R hammerless .32 revolver. Yes, I know, I know, I know; it's no cannon. But, she has a tough time with my P3AT and she wanted something that was small and convenient enough to carry 24/7. It took a while before finding something she could shoot comfortably. This little H&R .32 is 100% dependable, in fantastic condition and I'm just glad it's always with her. It will say "get off me" if it has to.

When we wrestle up some decent cash, she'll get something a little more potent. However, this little H&R was a pretty decent deal for only $100 shipped price.

Another note: She definitely understands the insanity of purse carry. She wants her gun under her control, not under the control of the thief.

My wife is slowly getting more gun savy. When we first were married we had a couple of big arguements because she wanted me to get rid of my guns. She now has a couple that have become hers and does go shooting with me but hasn't gotten comfortable enough to carry. I don't think that she ever will get her permit.

Not to sound sexist, but I imagine there are a few ladies here that have a CCW and their husbands do not. :uhoh:

Any ladies want to fess up? :)

My wife just applied for her CCW. She had never fired a weapon of any sort before last year. I had been advocating for her to do so for some time.

One day she did something monumental. She went by herself into a large gun store in the nearby large city. A FEMALE clerk spent more than an hour with her acquainting her with various handguns. It is very important about the clerk being female. Most male clerks tend to talk over the heads of newbies (especially female). The lady informed my wife that a CCW weapon caliber should start with a 4 and nothing smaller would prove to be as effective. After looking over a lot of handguns my wife selected the P40 because of the way it fit her hand and she thought it was cute.:D I have to say that I have never bought a firearm because I thought it was cute, but whatever works for her is fine with me.

I was a little embarrassed but proud at the same time when my wife proved to be a better shot than I am.

Since she will be primarily carrying while traveling, she wants to carry in a cross draw holster. I need to find one for her that is somewhat concealable for when she is not in a vehicle.

I started carrying a Kahr K9 then switched to a XD sc 9 because even though the K9 carried better it was a little picky about failure to feed if it was a little dirty.

I have since moved on to the S&W 442 in .38+P in pocket carry, all problems solved, carries great and is super lite. The gun shoots great and serves its purpose for any social work needed.

Mine doesn't, but I also checked other because she knows how to use my pistol and is more than willing to use it in our house to protect our daughter if need be.

New GF isn't a gun person yet, and prefers that I be the one in charge of stuff like disassembling people.

My wife has a S&W 642 and is good with it at the range. She only carries pepper spray though. I own 7 handguns and 4 long rifles and don't carry either. I'm 6' 1" and weigh 275 so people don't mess with me anyway. I guess we don't want to be on a government list after what happenned in Tennesee. We don't trust the government, the less they know about us the better.:scrutiny:

My wife carries a Glock 26 religiously. She buys purses based on whether they have a place for a gun. She even carries at work.

She works at a Vet Clinic in a bad part of town. When she was told not to, my wife told her boss that she would have her resignation at the end of the day. The boss then said "well just be discrete about it" (which has always been the case). The irony was that after the "no carry" discussion, she really needed it- AT WORK. There was a junkie trying to kick in the back door and yelling that he wanted "Special K" (Ketamine- a veterinary tranquilizer). The Doctor on duty asked her to get her gun until the cops showed up. The junkie never got in, but it was a scary moment nonetheless.

I voted other. She's taken her class and about to get her CCW, but honestly I can't see her carrying her 642 very often right now, except for when she takes a walk... More or less she likes having it the most when I'm out of town, but she was willing to get the permit and I can keep working on her to carry regularly. :)

I like this thread! I've also wondered how women carry. I'm especially interested in women's opinions of purse carry. I've lost a lot of purses in my life, and even had one snatched, so I admit to an anti-purse bias.

I don't have a carry permit yet. I'm new to shooting, and don't feel that I have the skills yet to carry safely. I've been travelling a lot for work, so I haven't had a chance to take any classes. I'm hoping to have time in the fall.

I bought a PPK/s with the intention of using it for my carry weapon until I read this:

I have an H&R .32 revolver also. Maybe I should consider carrying it when the time comes.

Of all the holsters I've looked at (only looked at, not tried) the cross-draw is the one I feel would work best for me - that feeling is based on instinct or intuition, not experience. I'd be interested in hearing what people think about cross-draw holsters.

I've carried crossdraw for decades, whether concealed or afield. I can get to the gun better, and my feeling is that you can fend off a gunsnatch easier with your off-hand while still being able to draw with your strong hand. I'm fairly high-waisted, with long arms, so it's a lot easier to draw that way, rather than having to crook your strong hand elbow so tightly on a strong hand draw.

It's also a lot better when driving (what with seat belts in the way) or just plain sittin'. And the muzzle of a full-sized gun seems to nestle between the seat and back cusions fairly well. For a while I carried at 3 o'clock and bought a swivel holster for that purpose, but soon found I preferred 9 or 10 o'clock. I still have that holster but it sits in a box with all two dozen other holsters I rarely use.

There are some disadvantages, like "crossing your target" on the draw instead of bringing the muzzle to bear on its way up through the target, but I don't have that problem.

Opinions vary on various things on any board, be it guns or cameras or cars, so feel free to listen to others' opinons on crossdraw as well.

I did not vote... I'm perfectly happy with two arms, two legs, two eyes, two kids, and no wives.

My wife carries a P228 in her gun-purse and keeps a Colt King Cobra .357 by her side of the bed.
