I do believe a glock 18 will set you back a tad more than $1,000. Also beretta has a FA 92 And CZ has a FA 75

I'd probably add several current bargain guns to my collection rather than one high end one. CZ40...Steyr MA1...FNP9...etc... Could get all three for $1000.
 
These days I'm in with the "buy ammo" crowd, though I'd probably buy reloading components first.

If it HAS to be a gun I'd get a .40 S&W carbine of some sort because that's what I think I want next.

a Winchester 1885 in .22 short

a S & W 1911
