It's an oil can. It's to keep the action lubed and the barrel wiped down.

Oiler Dual Spout Round Russian Mosin Nagant & SKS Rifles

Original Russian Issue, here are the uses for each side of the oiler.
Щ => Щелочное решение = alkaline solution (gun cleaner)
Н => Нефть = oil

Clean it with Hoppe's. Don't get too aggressive trying to get all the leading out of the barrel. Clean the bore lightly and see how accurately it shoots. If it's inside of 4" at 100 yds, call it good for now. If it's 8" in 100 yds you might as well clean all the leading out and try to build up a good shootable layer of lead back into the barrel. Shoot it dirty till you get groupings that are reasonable.

When you shoot it. Keep the stock snug into your shoulders pocket!
If you shoot with a loose grip, you'll feel the pain immediately. Find a good ammo source and stick with it. Buy your ammo in bulk, you'll need it. They are a whole lot of fun to spend shooting out on the range for a day.
I've read that the 91/30 rifles often shoot better with the Bayonet on. That wouldn't surprise me much either. I just got a 91/30 myself about a month ago, and I can't wait to get it out to the range for some fun shooting.
I've shot them before and I thought it was pretty sweet shooting an old military rifle. Not the most accurate rifle ever made, but they served the Russian and Slovic soldiers well when they were needed most.

To get all the cosmo, dismount the action/barrel from the wood, use a wire brush, best is brass, and some gasoline outside. Scrub that bore and chamber as much as you can, that cosmoline is 60 years dried. It will look shiny and can be quite hard, but it is there to keep the metal safe , untill you remove it. Pay close attentioon to the chamber. I chuk up a chamber brush on a section of rod and use a cordless drill, with several rinses with a solvent or gas.
Getting the cosmoline out of the chamber is very important, because a dirty/cosmo'd chamber will have the fired shell get "sticky", with the bolt handle being hard to lift.
This is a Mosins way of saying "Clean Me!!!"
For the outside, a gas soaked rag and some elbow grease will help.
Once issed, a soldier would strip the varnish from the stock useing mineral spirits or strong alcohol, and oil it to keep it in shape.
When reassembling the action to the wood, I smear a thin layer of greas on the metal that will be under wood.

Being an arsenal referb, it should be ready to use after a good cleaning, as it was brought into proper specs then, before storage.

Have fun!

Here's a great Mosin site - http://7.62x54r.net/

Here's their link to cleaning - http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinCleaning.htm

Quite a bit of good MN info here too - search around.

This is my first gun is their anything i should do now?

Yes - keep an open mind. If this is truly your first gun, what you've done is akin to buying a Dusenberg as your first car. Mosin's are very cool and deliver a lot of firepower but they are not up to modern firearms standards. I have one and love it but I would never confuse it with an AR or AK.

Be safe, have fun, go shootin'.

If your a 'Reader', I wayyyyyyy reccomend Jeff Coopers Book, "The Art Of The Rifle".

Its got so much good info for basic riflemanship, and isnt actually long at all.
A very good lesson on morals and Citizenship that gos with owning a Rifle and Using one.

First and formost
You must practise using the safety.

You have a safety that is easy when you know how and practice;

hold the rifle like your gonna shoot it..........lower the butt to the inside crook of your right arms elbow and rest it against your lower bicep. Then, holding tight to the forend with your left hand, grasp the bolts rearmost nurled peice, the cocking/safety knob between thumb and finger and pull it rearward while twisting it counterclockwise.
Your bicep will swell to pull and you will find it twice as easy to pull on the safety this way..... Pulling and twisting leaves it setting it about 25' to the left, in a slight but firm notch, that not only keeps it from firing, but locks the bolt closed.
This can be done/undone as easy as working the action for the next shot.
This is handy because the magizine only accepts 4 rounds in it, and a stripper charging will put a round in the chamber. If your shooting right then, no problem, if not, remove the 5th round and lock down the bolt, keep hunting.

Your need a cleaning kit. The issued one is not in your picture.

A Clean Rifle is one that works and is accurate.

For now, you can actually use the 'screwdriver tip" on the bayonet to dismount the stock from the action to remove cosmoline, thats why its shaped that way.
The tools in the issue kit, when used properly will do the job, but theres better stuff out there, and keep at home. The Issue screwdriver/firing pin protrusion gauge/firingpin wrench combo tool is hand now and then, a clever tool.
Try to find a soviet issue one for travle, and a soild rod and an assortment of brushes (You NEED more Guns, give it time :D)
Get rags and an old tooth brush or two, as well as a container to catch any solvents you r flushing/brushing the bore with. I use an old ammo can and store the cleaning tools, brushes, rags, etc. in it.

Clean it, then again.:D

I have two of them, one original and restored (by me) and one bubba'd. I was so suprised at this gun for accuracy and velocity. And for the price, you can't beat it. In old school stock form, I really can't comprehend how soldiers fought with these things.

Have fun with it, but heed what Ohio Gun Guy had to say!
