Looks like dead heat between Smith and Glock. Although I must say that most people who have discussed thier votes here and who are voting SW are for its revolver quality, and same goes for Ruger.

Arguably one of the finest combat side arms in the world, my S&W Model 65-3 / 3 in. Brl / .357 / is as crisp and reliable as she was when I purchased her in February of '87. She was the issue revolver of a (late) friend who served with the Texas DPS for 30 years.

Armoredman...nice looking gun there.

I see that CZ does has its fans, but the strength is somehow lacking in the polls, when I know that there are perhaps more CZ lovers on THR than the poll reflects.

I'm surprised Glock beat S&W so far... For a "just one gun" - scenario I would have expected that more people go for a .357 magnum revolver. My Glock is my favourite pistol, but I would still choose my S&W 66 or 19 4" if I could only have one.

If I could choose between any handgun it would be a Glock 18, but since there are no pre-86 G18s and even if there were I couldn't afford one.

I'd take a Glock 19. That being said I could make due with just about any handgun.

If I was in the city, it'd be a my Makarov IJ70. In a rural setting, I'd go for something with a longer barrel and a bit more power, maybe a revolver. Although, I have a tweaked CZ 52 that would make me feel perfectly comfortable out in the boonies.

I voted for Glock (G21) - my Colt .357 Mag Python comes in 2nd because it mates well with my Winchester 94 .357 Mag carbine.

Seems to me the Poll is flawed in that it asks "Just One
Handgun" then the options for response are different manufacturers.

I think it might have been more appropriate for the response
options to be different types of handguns such as
Polymer framed HIgh Cap Semi-Auto
STeel Frame High Cap Semi AUto
1911 or 1911 Clone
Double Action revolver in .357 Mag
DOuble Action Revolver in .44 Mag
Single Action Revolver in and so on

and of course!
Other

once the type is selected in the poll, the respondent
can mention the exact make & Model Frame size/Bbl.
Length. etc

My .02

Tough one.

In your hypothetical, is CCW still allowed? If so, that becomes a major factor, if I only get one choice.

For me, either Kahr PM9 or Kahr P45/Kimber 3" 1911 Ultra Carry. The PM9 is (for me) the ultimate balance between power, weight and concealability. The 45s are confidence-inspiring but larger, heavier (and more expensive to feed) but still very compact for a 45 acp.

If CCW is not a factor, then a 4" K-or-L-frame S&W. M-19, M-66, M586/686 come to mind.

Well Orionengnr, CCW is left open. It is upto you and your needs that will decide that one handgun. In other words CCW or not you will have just that one handgun.

Armoredman..This is a little OT..not much. I've been giving serious consideration to a laser sight for one of my handguns. Do you find it effective? Is the accuracy that much better? I've never tried one before.

Thanks in advance...Johnny
