Ruger is number 3 that shows you that a lower cost gun is not always junk.Yes rugers are bigger than other guns but there built like tanks and they shoot well.I have 3 rugers and I wil be buying the new LCP as a pocket pistol. As for taurus I have one a mod. 85 but the quality is not even close to ruger and I won't buy another taurus.I will be buying a CZ75B they are also a well built gun.I was looking at the glock,xd,S&w but I like guns with a hammer.
I love my P95

I guess given a hypothetical situation, the abundance of scenarios that could create a 1 gun choice, would have a huge impact on the selections.
I considered it from kind of a "Red Dawn" survival scenario and my vote went to the S & W Mod 19 .357 Combat Magnum that I currently have. I just figure it packs a little more punch than my XD-40 for hunting, and is much more concealable than my 44 mag model 29 for defense purposes.
If it were a political move by our own government, then I might vote differently though.

The anguish of picking only one but, if that's the question, I'd opt for a Ruger Blackhawk "Convertible" .357 Mag./9mm cylinders- in stainless steel. Sob...:(

Very interesting insights. I must say that although I have only limited experience with Ruger (SRH 7.5" .44 Rem. Mag) I am very impressed.

Among pistol only manufacturer SIG is doing well after Glock. However I am surprised that HK has not score as I thought. Whereas similar is the case with springfield.

If they passed that law then it is "go time".
Meaning the proverbial balloon just went up.

I'd take a GP100.......if I wasn't dead from fighting for the God given right.

I would have to say that for me it would be the GLOCK 19.
(I've been carrying it personally and professionally since the late 80's (Gen. 1). I carry 45's but I'm more proficient with the G19.

Yep..Glock 19 is a good choice, especially when you can fit it with 15, 17 or 31 round mag!

It would be a Ruger DA revolver. Not sure at this point which one it would be, though. Some months ago, I'd have said a 4-inch GP100, but the 3-inch is growing on me, as is the 4-inch Redhawk .44.

Had chosen Ruger it would have been a super redhawk, as I am not imprressed with ruger pistols.

If I could only have one handgun... hmm...

I would first say that price doesn't matter, if I can only have one, I'm going to spend whatever I want to make sure I get exactly whta I want.

Secondly, i'm going to want verstatility, shooting different calibers for different purposes would be a plus, from hunting, to defense, to plinking, ect.

Thirdly, Reliability, so I'd probably go with a revolver, they tend to have less breakable parts, seem to be more reliable in my expirience.

Considering all things, I'd probably with the with S&W 460, 5".

can shoot 45lc, 454, and 460 for ultimate versatility, isn't TOO big (5" barrel is better than the 12 or 14).

Expensive... but I don't care, I can only get one :)

It is quite interesting that so far when given option to have only one handgun people in good numbers are chosing revolvers. This show the six guns are very much in and people put lot of stock in it.

Why?

What's the situation. That might make a difference as to which one I'd choose.

Would I also get to have a rifle or shotgun?

The answer to question whether you get to keep a rifle or shotgun is immaterial, since the poll is asking for only one handgun that you would use for whatever your needs are. I know this may be compromising on some ends, but this way I get to assess which is most popular and trusted brand among THR members.

It's been said before, but... if you want to assess "popular and trusted" ask about "popular and trusted" ... the question you've asked will get a completely different answer.

Example: At this moment I'd answer S&W 460 revolver w/ 2-3/4" barrel. Why? Wide variety of uses (hunting/dangerous animal protection all the way to, in a pinch, concealed carry), wide variety of ammo compatibility (.45colt, .454 casull, 460s&w), I happen to load for .45 colt so practice ammo isn't a problem, good brass retention because it's a revolver, and so on.

Someone else might answer with a T/C contender because with that and a stack of barrels he can fire anything from .22lr to 7mm rem mag.

Does that mean those guns are especially popular and trusted? No.

Let me re phrase. The handgun that you would chose if the gun onwership law restricts to one. I am trying see which brand most THR will end up voting for.

That's the thing... once you bring in a restriction like that many people try to find ways to honor the leter of the law/question and still get what the rules say they can't have.

It's human nature. Even if people ddn't really care before, once you put the limit in people will try to get around it.

If you asked the questio as, "If you could only afford one handgun and you wanted a good one because you know it'll last a long time what would you get?" You would get some of the answer you want but you'd also get "I'd buy several cheap guns" and "I'd get a better job." It's human nature.

Going back to my 460 revolver answer... I think it's a really good answer for the question as posed. You can buy converters to fire .22lr out of them, they are decently accurate and effective. On and on... but I don't own one. Why don't I own one if I think it's such a good option? Because while that revolver seems like a great choice if you can only have one there are other brands and guns I'd rather have in the world I'm actually in. I'd rather have a CZ pistol for general shooting, a Ruger single action revolver for large bore hunting/target shooting, maybe an S&W j-frame for concealed carry.... of those I think the CZ is the one I most trust (if not the most popular) to be a good gun.

Different questions, different answers.

Ed Adams .... You can look at it that way as well. I am sorry i can not up with one particular question satifies everyone.. So question is as is and please kindly state your reasoning and vote.

I am really appreciating your insights. They will help me pose and form better questions in future.

Thank you

How come DE is not chosen when it have conversions kit for 44 and 357, thus when limited to one handgun you can have two calibers one for defense other for hunting as well?
