Just ordered a PTR-91, did I screw up?

I don't normally have a problem with muzzle flash when I shoot. But having a bayonet is just so cool. Of course, having both would be great.

Btw, it seems like you can't get a bipod for under $100 anymore...

You just might have screwed up! Check this out!

Broken Bolt Head, First range trip

This truly pisses me off, this easily could have been a KABOOM

I fired 80 rounds thru this brand new PTR-91SC today, there was no indication of this problem until I field stripped the rifle when I got home for cleaning and this just fell apart!

I fired 60 rounds American Eagle 150 and 20 rounds Remington UMC 150 grain.

I have already emailed PTR-91 along with these pics. They are definetely getting a piece of my mind tomorrow on the phone.

BTW, I did field strip and clean this gun before I took it to the range and there was no sign of cracks.

I have no intention of letting them pass this off as no big deal.

Now that I think of it, this deserves a new thread.

Wow that sucks. I have a G3s made in the 80s if you can get a refund. Been thinking of selling it.

I was about to order one of these but now i'm not so sure anymore. What did they end up telling you?

Same thing happed to me

I purchased an PTR-91KF so I could put my old HK 91's A3 paratrooper style stock on it and after three trips to the range the bolt cracked. I have only had the rifle 10 days. I'm including the pics as well and just sent my email to PTR91 inc. I hope to get a reply soon and keep you all up to date.

You find posts about any firearm. I'm continually amazed at AK owners trumpeting the rock solid durability in one thread, and in another, dissecting failure to feed, malfunctions, and other quality issues.

Build 40,000 of something, there will be issues in .05%. Great QC percentage, but that's still 2,000. Murphy's Law of the Internet says that 2,001 will post on the forums bitching about it.

You never hear about the other 39,800 satisfied owners. They are busy at the range actually getting better. The 2,001 will never be happy.

Wait for Xmas to come, enjoy the anticipation.

You sir, just won the internet.

aww.. that sucks.. i've always wanted a PTR 91 too but... no more. probably will grab me a rem 700 in .308win instead

Here is the replacement bolt after return of the rifle from PTR91...

This is after 45 rounds.

I have a new replacement RIFLE coming from PTR91 now and a German HK bolt coming from another source.

PTR91 is now making their own bolts, as the German HK bolts are no longer being imported and there is obviously some issues with the PTR bolts. I was able to find a new German HK bolt and will install it when my new rifle arrives, the PTR bolt will be used for spare parts I guess.

I must say PTR91 has been very helpful and responsive. Thanks Alison.

Hi. New to the forum. I have actually used this forum as a source of good information before I bought MY PTR-91F (# AW63XX).

After all the commotion stirred up over ammo pickyness and boltgap issues, I was a little worried, but firgured that more people were happy with their PTR's than were disappointed with them. Even the threads saying "This thing is garbage!" were usually answered by someone saying "Really? Mine works well..." and I always wanted an HK91 but could never afford one. So I saved some money and pulled the trigger, so-to-speak.

So, the first thing I did when I picked it up at my FFL was check bolt-gap. Right on, at .015. My brother and I got 100 rds of Federal American Eagle and took her to the range. Checked the 200yd zero at 30 yds, and the sights were dead on. No failures, no problems, even doing a little bump-firing to make an ass of myself and torture test it.

Got home, cleaned it, re-checked bolt gap. Still at .015. Already have a Bill Springfield trigger pack coming (don't want to modify the original trigger pack for warranty) as well as 20 steel mags from CTD. So far I'm very happy with my PTR-91F.

In the near future, I plan to get some DAG surplus from CTD as well, and see if my particular gun likes it. If not, I reckon on trying out Silver Bear and Prvi Partizan.

The bolt gap shouldn't change for well over 1000 rounds, so this is good news but unsurprising.

Even companies whose name is routinely combined with "drunken monkeys" put out a decent number of reliable, serviceable guns. And I have not heard the the inebriated primate expression used with JLD or PTR91.com.

Do yourself a favor and buy some aluminum mags too. Much lighter and generally more pleasant to use. Sure they may wear out sooner, but for now they're still available for $2-3, which is oh say the cost of about 4-6 .308 cartridges. :)

Mine worked great with Brown Bear. And IMHO Prvi ammo is fairly close to if not comparable to the DAG surplus in quality, and it's reloadable (PTR disclaimer: if you can find it). I have used both.

I read at least one thread on a forum somewhere where a guy said his bolt gap was closing up at the rate of something like .002 per hundred rounds. I figured it was a rare thing, but something to watch out for. I'm generally a very poor guy, so investing over $1k on a rifle, I wanted to be aware of anything I might need to get warranty to take care of, as early as possible.

I've heard varying reports of suitability of different ammo, depending on the specific gun, so I want to try a little of everything I can, and find something that works well to stock up on.

Cheaper Than Dirt currently has the Steel mags for $2.97 ea and aluminums for $.97. Their DAG is running around $85/200, so I figured it was worth trying one. Midway has (new?) Prvi Partizan 200rd packs for around $140; does anyone know a cheaper source for the same stuff? From what I've read, Partizan is pretty good stuff, and reloadable is good. BTW, I decided one of the first accessories I need is a port buffer. Of the 100rds of AE I shot, I recovered 86, and ALL were scrap, due to the crease in the case from hitting the rear of the port.

I just wish .308 ammo was cheaper....

Wow! Holy computational errors, Batman!

Anyway, I had a PTR91-K model and it wa sa good gun. It did tend to fire the brass into the next county and it weighed nearly as much as a Sherman Tank. but it was dead reliable and darned accurate..

Enjoy it..

I won't buy from CTD due to their behavior during the "shortage," so my remarks may be a bit influenced by that. The stated prices on G3 mags are actually pretty good. The ammo price is nothing special. DAG is surplus and is berdan primed so not reloadable, both of which should knock its price down a bit. I think you will find better prices on .308 at AIM Surplus, Ammoman, and AmmoToGo.com.

Until you get that port buffer, anything brass cased is a waste, for reasons you've discovered (mine was the same). I highly recommend Brown Bear. It's noticeably better than Wolf, it ran fine in my PTR, and it costs only $4-5 per 20, last I checked.

I have had my PTR91 for over five years.
It came with the redesigned chamber flutes and a Portugese bolt/carrier system.
I have had zero issues with the rifle other than it didn't function well with South African surplus ammo.

I have shot oodles of steel case Chinese and quite a bit of Brown and Silver Bear in the rifle, no problems other than lackluster accuracy and that can't be blamed on the rifle.

Winchester Supreme and Federal Gold Medal Match shoot sub MOA.

I guess I got one of the good ones or am just lucky.

The price on these rifles gas really climbed up there, I paid $775 for mine.
