After much deliberation and comparisons on pocket pistols, I picked up a Ruger LCP. Took it out to the range, and quickly discovered I'm more accurate 1-handed shooting than I am when shooting with two hands.

Also noticed the slide is a bit difficult to rack. Not sure if that's a flaw in my specific gun, an inherent design issue of the LCP, my large hands attempting to grip a tiny slide, or what.

So: any tips or advice from LCP owners?

First, your findings are not uncommon.

Second, the more you shoot it, the more you'll become accustomed to its diminutive size. you'll likely find it more accurate than you would have imagined. :)

A finger-groove baseplate can help if you haven't tried one.

Put a dot of bright nail polish on the front sight, makes it easier to pick up. I didn't care for the handall grip, instead I put on a kind of grippy tape made it more positive to hang on to when she jumps. The Impact guns +1 mag extension works well, I added wolf extra power mag springs to compensate for the additional round. CT laser works pretty good but I find I can shoot satisfactorily with the front sight dot.

Rack the slide a couple of hundred times while watching TV. Shoot it a whole bunch...I have about 500 rounds through mine and it's had 1 jam and that was the 4th shot. Of course I've only shot 2 types of ammo in it, I love mine.

shoot it, shoot it,shoot it. The longer trigger pull takes some getting used to but it will become one of your favorite guns.

Okay, just kidding....I no longer will pick-on the LCP.....

Well I will, he should get rid of it...

Why is that? Because you didn't like yours? Did it break or not function properly?

I have two that work great. They are nice pocket pistols IMO why no love for the LCP?

My LCP has been 100% since day 1. As a matter of fact, so have the LCP's of about 5-6 different people I know. Ruger's QC is pretty good.

Tip to the OP -- install the finger extensions on the mags if you haven't already.

I have a love / hate relationship with my LCP

I am really fond of my wife's LCP even thought it is pink... Never had any problem with the little pistol and it sure is more comfortable to carry than a 4" XD40.

Shoot the heck out of it and enjoy it.

Thanks for the tips. I did install the finger extension immediately. Of course, I didn't know that it held the magazine spring, so that went flying as soon as I removed the original magazine cap. Whoops! Fortunately, I felt it when it zipped past my head so I had an idea where to look for it.

Oh, and +1 on wearing eye protection whenever adjusting a gun.

I'll try the slide rack while watching tv technique.

Is it safe to say that the problems that I hear about with respect to the LCP were due to flaws when the LCP was first introduced, but those flaws have been ironed out? It seems like people either love or hate the LCP.

i had problems with horaday critical defence(the red rubber tiped) but every other round fed and worked flawlessly. im 2500rds in and still no problems

I think all small guns like the LCP run better with grease on the rails instead of oil......just runs smoother. Also, all the tests I've seen seem to show Remington Golden Saber 102 gr perform really well out of short barrel pocket .380s.....they also feed 100% in my LCP/P-3AT.
YMMV

I've had mine now for approximately two years......one of the early models that had to be returned to the factory for some mods......some character dropped one on a concrete slab and it went bamg which generated mass recalls. I carry mine 90% of the time (Nemisis pocket holster). My only complaint is that with a pair of fairly tight fitting jeans, the mag release releases and when I draw, I have to jam the mag back into position which could be a real problem is a defensive situation. Love the pistol as far as functionality goes.....has never misfired.

I wrote Ruger about the mag release problem and their response was that presently they don't have a fix for it. I've considered filing down the mag release a milimeter or two to see if that would solve the problem. I feel that Ruger needs to place more emphasis on a fix for this since it could be a real problem in a life/death situation.........that's my two cents worth.

I've got two, both have been 100% reliable. Both are accurate too. Fun little pistols that I would trust to carry.

I've had one for about six months. It has been a very reliable little pistol, that is very easy to carry daily.

I almost bought an LCP but ended up getting a TCP. The LCP should serve you well if you don't expect it to do too much. It isn't a target pistol. It is a self defense weapon. The trigger pull is harder than a TCP, but if a stressful situation you won't notice. It is a reliable gun to keep in your pocket for a bug gun.

I use Shooter's Choice Gun Grease on my rails with good results.

Ruger1228, what do you recommend for a "real" pocket pistol? I've got full-size pistols and revolvers; obviously this little guy is in a different category.

Ruger is now installing a steel mag catch and stronger mag catch spring. My LCP is at Ruger right now for mag drop issues.
