Just wondering why I'm not shot

I've been into shooting for just over a year now. I think my Sig is defective and I should send it back.

During the last year that I have had it I haven't even remotely thought of shooting anyone with it even while being out and about in public places with my carry permit.

Also, knock on wood, it hasn't magically gone off by itself and injured anyone.

If you would have told me over a year ago that walking around with an loaded pistol with no safety on it was safe I would have probably thought you were a bit nuts.

As someone has said, most anti's haven't handle a firearm or received any training on them. Even as a non-anti I was a bit apprehensive around firearms before someone took me shooting and taught me the basics of safe gun handling and shooting.

This is just depressing to read. I see how you older gentlemen used to live, a life I often dream about and wish still existed.

Yet no one is shooting each other. In fact, I have not yet heard of one of us even raising a gun towards another. If all the Gun Control Nuts (GCN’s) are right them we should all be dead by now. I mean, we aren’t special really. We come from cities, farms, suburbs, and rural areas. Many of us have been arrested at one point or another. So why aren’t we killing one another? I am confused.

...but the guns have yet to make us kill each other

I do think you are a bit confused. GCNs don't claim that everyone with guns or around guns will be killed, though they do claim increased risk of injury or death for the general population around guns. While GCNs are paranoid about the presence of firearms, I can't recall any actually arguing that guns make you kill people. Their concern is that presence or ease of access makes situationally incorrect spontaneous lethal force far too easy than if guns were not present. If people didn't have guns, then they would not have NDs either. Of course, these arguments are not valid.

Turns out, you all really are special. You are professional warriors and gun handlers.

Maybe you could make the argument that we have bigger issues to deal with and that keeps us from going nuts. Though, you could argue the opposite too. Our training? Not likely since I got better training before I joined than since.

While you may have received better training before going into the military, I am sure that you must realize that many of your fellow soldiers never touched a gun before going into the military. Of those that had, most probably had nothing more than a basic hunter safety course and very few had professional training. The vast majority of the civilian population has no formal gun training. Add to that the issue that gun owning civilians not only don't get training, but most don't shoot on any regular basis. They don't maintain skills proficiency.

You have been trained and are a disciplined gun handler. GCNs don't perceive the general population in such a manner.

Maybe it is the supervision we get? Hate to let you all know, but we are often left to our own devices.

While you may not be supervised all the time by superiors, you are supervised by one another as Zombiphobia pointed out...
I'd like to ad one small thing here... I HAVE had a fellow service member point his rifle at me, even stick it into my stomach to taunt me after I told him to watch his muzzle. His argument was that "it's not even loaded"(we were turning them into the armory)... well, a short fight ensued.. I won. He made threats and gave lots of dirty looks but never spoke directly to me again.

Such supervision isn't the case for the vast majority of the civilian population.

The only deterrent I can think of is that using a weapon on anyone out here risks them returning the favor?
Ah, that would be the Polite Society theory.

So where is any justification for the paranoia that grips the GCN’s? I might be blind and missing something.
Maybe so. Paranoia does not require justification or empirical backing. It can exist based solely on beliefs or perceptions.

As has been pointed out, your circumstances are not the concern of GCNs. Cops and the military are those that are supposed to have guns.

Good point, there are good people and bad people. We usually only hear about the bad gun owners though. Guess it's like a Democrat that supports people having guns, they kinda suppress that sometimes. I know it's few and far between anyways.
i am a Conservative Democrat. There are more of us than you might imagine, we just tend not to advertise it. And yes, I do support the right to carry.

^And I have known several Republicans that openly admit they don't think people should have ready access to guns, so surprise, surprise, it goes both ways.

You just might get in trouble assuming too much. Red/Blue labels are good and fine for slinging insults, but rarely are issues truly only two sided, and even rarer that people will agree on every issue. Guess why I'm not a member of either party?

Just like how someone said earlier they never knew an anti-gun person in the military, I work with one civilian who is retired military, and he doesn't think people should have access to guns. Fortunately (IMHO) he is in the minority (I think, at least).

To respond to the original post:
the police and military don't count. Magical government fairy dust was sprinkled on your weapons.

If the magical dust ever wears off, even for a second, we have people like the Honorable Senator Kerry to raise the alarm about your inevitable "personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside"

If that magic dust fades, people like the Honorable Senator Murtha will chronicle your inevitable "Well, I’ll tell you exactly what happened. One Marine was killed and the Marines just said we’re going to take care – we don’t know who the enemy is, the pressure was too much on them, so they went into houses and they actually killed civilians."

Don't tell the anti gun crowd that, they will try to get you guys to shoot each other to make their claims correct.

You mean guns dont make you want to rape and kill!??

Out here in the suburbs where most gun owners live, and consequently where most guns are, I have to swim through rivers of blood and dodge bullets just to get my newspaper! I'm considering moving to the inner city and joining a drug gang just to get away from all the crazed, violent, suburban gun owners and get some peace and quiet!
But seriously; One of the reasons we've garnered so much public support for liberalized conceal carry and open carry laws is that those dire predictions the anti's have been making for years now have never materialized. As more states enact "shall issue" laws the more evidence is produced that gun owners in general, and permit holders in particular, are more peaceable and law abiding than the rest of the population.

To all the Vets here-THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

While you may make cases that say the military and our "training" makes us a special case, I don't buy it. Sorry, but "ease of access?" I have 24 weapons 4 of which are machine guns in my sight right now. We get all types here and sorry to disappoint, but our training doesn't weed out the bad apples. I can point to a few of those too.
