someone i know is thinking about getting the hi point 9mm carbine and i mentioned that their is also the kel tec sub 2000 in 9mm. so i told him i would post it here, to see what you guys thought. i like the kel tec myself even though it is a bit more money. just for the fact it can take glock mags is a bonus, and in my humble opinion overall higher quality.

They made the Kel-Tec in various magazine standards - besides Glock, there were versions that would accept S&W mags and a few others. I personally prefer the Glock-mag version simply because 33-rounders are easy to find and relatively cheap.

I also find that the Kel-Tec is less creaky, quite a bit lighter and quicker-handling, has slightly better sights (IMO) and the folding ability is handy for car/motel duty. The Hi-Point has better ergos, however, especially with the aftermarket CX4-style stock (which also eliminates the creak).

It's nice to have a carbine which can fit into a briefcase....

When the price difference between Sub2K's and Hi Point 995's was $150+, Hi points were great values. You could literally buy two hi points for the price of one kel tec! Now this a 995TS going for $250 and a Sub2k can still be found for $300, is there even really a question?

MY sub2k .40 is a great little carbine that packs a punch and fits inside a brief case. It is a go anywhere rifle. The hi point has better sights, but that's about it! Get a kel tec!

Dependable, accurate, portable, fun, and easy to hit with. Mine takes S&W mags. If I had a Glock, naturally I would have gotten one that takes Glock mags, but I don't. I do not know if they make them to tame XD mags, but that would be what I would get these days, since I do have an XD.

Another vote for the sub2k - I have one in Glock 9mm config, its cheap, reliable, light, accurate and folds in half.

His decision might well be made by what is available to buy. I've been waiting for my distributors to come up with a -single- Sub2K for nearly a year now ....

Sub2K with glock mags + Glock 17 = :D
Best attributes:
1. It folds! Come on, how cool it that!?
2. Glock factory 33rd magazines
3. Lightweight

I can't say anything about the sub-2000, but i did have a High Point. Big mistake. Over priced junk.
Biggest Complaints:
1)Jammomatic
2)Horrible sights
3)No hi-cap magazines
4)Cheap stock

I've got both and would recommend the Kel-Tec.

The sub 2000 I have is in 9mm and takes Beretta 92 mags. If I had to do it over I would get one in .40 that takes Glock mags (due to the hi-cap mag availabilty and the differences in terminal ballistics between the two rounds). The only down side to the Sub 2000 is the trigger kinda sucks.

The big down side to the high point is mag capacity and availability. I've also got the aftermarket CX4 style stock for the Hi-point but don't have much confidence in it....the weakness seems to be in the barrel channel, it's not really designed to handle a hot barrel that's had more than a few mag puts through it.

I'm going to sell my Kel Tec sub2000 in .40 with Glock mags..... its a nice gun.... but being left handed, I get sprayed in the face with burnt powder remnants on every shot.... it doesn't do that when I shoot right handed.... but I'm left handed....

I've owned a KT Sub2K for about 3 years now. As has been mentioned, the biggest issue is FINDING one. I spent a long time looking after I decided I wanted it.

Mine is set up in 9mm, Glock mags. I like it. It doesn't have the greatest trigger, but it's great fun to shoot. The length of pull is a tad short for my taste. (I'm six feet tall.) The stock extension from KT would be a nice addition. The recoil is a sharp little bite though, you'll have to find your sweet spot to hold it.

If you can find it, the KT is way nicer than the Hipoint, which I've shot a few times as well.

I've read that the KT's will eat anything after the break in period. I plan to add one to my collection soon.

I inherited a HiPoint 995 that Dad bought back when I was in high school. It has been a great little carbine for about 15 years! I sent it back to HiPoint last year for a going-over and it came back like-new.

My only gripe is the single-stack mag issue. The new Promag 15 rounders work well, but they're expensive for what they are. If it were possible to make it accept a doublestack mag, I'd love the damned little gun even more.

Hell, with my cheap reloads, it will hold 1.5" at 50 yards.

The HighPoint is inexpensive and it works, it's accurate and durable. BUT it takes low capacity magazines and is a carbine length rifle.

The KelTec is a bit more expensive and is also accurate. But it takes several different high capacity magazines and can be folded up to fit in a gym bag or briefcase and look innocent.
I do believe that the folding mechanism could possibly make the Sub2000 less durable in the long run than the HighPoint.

That said, my Sub-2000 shows no signs of problems and I've had it a while.

Haven't compared prices recently, but I do know the Kel-Tec is the pricier one. For that price, you get some extra features.

Magazine compatability with common high-quality pistols, like Glock, Beretta and Sig.

The rifle folds for easier storage.

The Kel-Tec in 9mm is 1lb lighter than the Hi Point in 9mm.

It's up to your friend to decide whether these extra features are worth the extra $.

Having fired both, I now own a KT sub2000 (9mm glock mag), even though I'm not an owner of any of the compatible magazine pistols.
The HP is a bit more ergonomic and cheaper
But the KT folds, takes commonly available mags, folds, has better sights (my opinion), folds, is better quality, folds, and has a less annoying bolt hold-open option. Plus the KT folds.

But I admit it, the buttplate on my sub2000 left a small bruise on me after running ~250 rounds through for break-in, and the operating handle took a nip out of the pad of my hand when I was figuring out the best way to work the wonky underslung handle ... the ergonomics aren't the greatest.
