I have a chance to buy a Kel-Tec 9MM carbine (Dont know the model yet) for an asking price of $150. I have never had one of these little carbines, I have seen one Hi-Point for sale here locally for $135 which seems like a pretty standard price. Is the Kel-Tec worth a little more or are they a wash.

The Hi-Point carbine is excellent in terms of reliability, and is probably as accurate as the Kel-Tec. On the other hand, the Kel-Tec can take hi-capacity magazines, whereas the Hi-Point is limited to 10 rounds, IIRC. Also, the Kel-Tec can be folded for easier carry in a briefcase, suitcase, gym bag, etc. These two advantages would make me opt for the Kel-Tec at those prices.

I paid $100 more for my Kel-Tec and love it. Mine is configured for Glock magazines and I have 3, 30 round mags for it. My friend has a Hi-point and I have shot it, the only drawback I can see is the lack of reliable hicapacity magazines for it.

The Kel-Tec's are better built, easier (by a lot) to break down, store more efficiently and can be had in configurations to accept mags for Glock, S&W, Beretta and others. Reports on the Hi-point indicate that they are reliable, but they are certainly heavier and uglier. If the difference is only $15, there isn't much of a choice to be made. The KT is twice the price of the HP new.

The hi point pistols seem dirt cheap. Are they worth even considering? I saw a Hi Point 45 at the gun show a few years ago. NIB I think the guy wanted $175 for it. I have not seen a Hi Point of any kind at the gun show since.

I have never shot the Hi Point but I LOVE my kel tec. Takes Glock 18 mags so I have over 30 rounds of 9mm in a compact package and it is as accurrate as hell. Paid over three hundred for mine new. Jump on it.

the keltec is way better, if it is a model made in the last 1 or two, then it has a decent front site. If it is older, it has the stupid, adjust with a quarter in the huge front slot, front site. you can also get an after market buttpad and front post accesory rail, if you wanna 'trick" it out a little. if it is one that takes glock mags, they are the best. If it is not a glock , then hopefully it is the one that takes s&w mags. They are cheaper. make sure the mag well isn't so tight that the mags don't hang up inside a little, when you use the mag release.
The hi point is cool because you can get an after market stock assembly, and it becoms way better. they also have a fully adjustable rear site, and a rail all the way down the top of the receiver. but your mags will be expensive, and they will suck, and they will be limited to 10 rounders.
Also , if you do get the keltec, go get some tubular foam padding, and cut and glue on the tubestock, your face will thank you for it.

the high point pistols are, accurate, easy to pick up sites, fully adjustable rear sites, and somewhere along the way, some part of it will fall apart in your hands. It happend to me, and a couple other guys I know, while it was in recoil, on the range. very unsafe. also the slick plastic grip, when you hand starts to sweat, another unsafe thing.

The Hi-Point carbines are iffy on there relaibility. Many are reliable but others are jam-o-matics. I would go for the Kel-tec if I were you. You also get more hi-cap options with the Kel-tec- especially if it is one that uses Glock mags.

Never handled a Hi-Point but I love my KelTec. It is configured for Glock magazines. It has been 100% reliable with Glock 17 magazines but it occasionally jams with the the G18 31 round magazines. It's a fun gun to shoot and makes a great companion to the G17.

A friend of mine has a Glock 22 and a KelTec Sub2000 in .40S&W. I've been to the range with him and can report that his functions reliably too.

I've pwned both. Both were 100% reliable. I sold the Hi-Point and kept the Kel-Tec. The Kel-Tec is better in my opinion. Basis for this opinion is the ease of take down, folding option and hi-cap mags for the Kel-Tec. Mine likes the 33 round mags just fine.

Both are decent. For under 150 dollars, either will give you your money's worth. What mags does the Kel-tec accept? If it is glock mags, I would definitely get the kel-tec since that will simplify finding hi-cap mags.

I thought this thread was going to be "which one is uglier". :p

High capacity magazines with the game for me, KelTec.

Easy Choice..KEL-TEC

I had a Kel-Tec Sub2000 carbine in 9mm, took Glock mags. Great gun. Easy to clean, easy to shoot, surprisingly accurate.

I used to order bulk reloaded ammo...and I put a few thousand rounds of reloads thru my Kel-Tec without a single jam....ever!

Pauls Discount Pawn in Somerset, Ky had one (Hi-Point) last time I was there, about 1 1/2 months ago, asking $135.

Well I missed out on the Kel-Tec, he sold it before I could get ahold of him. The good news though, he also had a Marlin 336 w/sling and Bushnell scope that he priced to me for $100!!! I drove 45 minutes one way last night to pick it up as soon as I got off the phone with him. I was so excited with that deal last night that I couldnt sleep, pics coming soon.

That Hi-Point isn't mine, it's the prototype magazine being made by a fella on the Hi-Point forum. It uses a factory magazine in the grip and there are no feeding malfunctions so far. He also say's it doesn't weigh enough to cause a problem with the magazine catch.

Hi-Point $150
ATI stock $60
Drum mag ?

Total under $300

Another thing: other than the hi-point being able to fire +P+ loads and the Kel-tec not sure on, Kel-tec's website has a big banner that says "DO NOT USE ALUMINUM CASED AMMUNITION". Funny, my Hi-point likes CCI Blazer aluminum cased ammo. :scrutiny:
