Ok, my screen name is clueless, so don't beat me up to badly.

I have a gun coming in on order to my local Gunstore/range/FFL, I work during the day, my wife at night. We have 2 children, 5 and 8, and the only time I can pick up the gun is in the evening.

Is it considered inappropriate to take my young children in the store with me to pick it up, or is there a law, or am I simply feeling conditioned by a system that paints gun ownership as social taboo?

Ha ha, need I say, very well versed in gun safety and education and well behaved children?

Unless the owner has a problem with it I would say go for it. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my and dad visiting the local gunshop. Just bear in mind kids are kids and they like to touch things. Lord knows I left my grubby little fingerprints all over ever gun I could reach in that place.

The secret to that question is:

Well behaved children are welcome almost everywhere! The secret is the "well-behaved" part. Well behaved and curious is an even better combination. ;)

That about sums it up.

As long as they are leashed and muzzled they should be fine,, Now if they both have ADD and dont listen to you,, i'd probaly get a baby-sitter !!,,JK,, i have had to leave my favorite ma-and-pa gun store because my 6-yr old went into "psycho" mode,<< i waited 2-days and then explained to him i was going back to the "big-boy's" toy store to pick-up my gun,but he could only come if he acts like a big-boy,, problem solved,, EVERY time i've went there since he's quiet and polite,, stare's thru the glass cases at the guns and his only question is when can he shoot ??

kids are welcome if they keep their hands off the guns. Too expensive to risk dropping or banging. Call the dealer if you want, but I have not heard of anybody banning kids from the store

I bring my 5 year old son to my favorite pawn and gun shop. The owner is very welcoming and he now looks for my son every time I'm there. My son almost always gets freebies there, usually one of the model planes that the owner Uncle Al makes since that's his hobby.

It's gotten to the point where my son always asks to go to the "airplane store" and Daddy is more than happy to comply. He calls the owner Uncle Al and he reveres him more than Santa Claus.

We have customers who bring their kids over all the time. Sometimes I joke that we need to open a day care in addition to the gun biz at the house...

Seriously, as long as your kids are well behaved there shouldn't be an issue.

Well then hopefully it's settled, a guess a field trip is in their near future.

Now, where can I get the free expresso and the puppy?:)

definitely take them. I have 4 little ones. Any store they are not welcome in, I will not shop at. That being said, my girls have been taught since day 1,
1. if you are not buying it do not touch it.
2. Stores are not playgrounds (no running, climbing, screaming, etc)
3. Any breach of if these rules will be dealt with immediately.

So long as your kids are controlled, I cannot see a problem.

I always take mine...both boys aged 5 & 7. good kids....I have a friend who has 2 boys in close to same age group who I will not even let my kids be around because I dont want them thinking that their behavior is acceptable....his kids have been asked to leave along with the father unless he leaves them home. If your kids are even halfway decent..they will be fine.

What is odd is that for the last 10 years or so that I have purchased guns, I have never seen a kid in a gunstore. Must've had gun in my eye or something.

I take my 8 year old with me sometimes to get reloading supplies. He just pets the dog and gives him treats.

I see far too few.
Those early childhood memories play a big part in determining our views about how " life is".
My daughter spent a lot of time in gun shops, and she is very pro gun as an adult.

If they are well behaved they should be welcome. If they are well behaved and not welcome that would be the last purchase I made from that store.

If your kids don't hang and swing from the dryer doors in the laundromat or something, they will be fine in a gun shop. If the shop owner has a problem with it (unlikely - in fact, a smart one will try to cultivate them as future customers!), that is his problem.

There are two gun ranges close to where I live that have full retail shops that are very kid friendly.

I went shooting Sunday and noticed several children and one stroller. My views are the younger they are exposed and educated to firearms the better. We need to produce the next generation of pro gun citizens.

They are probably hiding from some guy pointing a gun at them. :D

As a kid I was in a gun store a lot. Gambles, Western Auto, Sears, Monkey Wards, Penneys, hardware store, lumber yard. It was kind of hard to go shopping and not be in a gun store.

I take my kids, especially my son to the gun store all the time. No taboo at all. You have to watch out more for the adults. They're not expecting a small child to be standing behind them or in their vicinity and can easily step on a kid or club him with a stock.

You know how Bubba gets all excited about the AR in .308 that he's never going to buy? He's not looking behind himself as he waddles back from the counter.

Visited a gun shop in Buenos Aires, Argentina a few years ago.....inside were about 15-20 kids who had stopped in after school. They were busy purchasing pellets and targets for their school air gun program.

Shows how far America has slipped when we are fearful of taking our children into a gun shop.

Far too few these days. My dad was taking me to gun stores when he still had to clean my diaper. One of these days I'll be doing the same. Like someone said earlier, "if my (well behaved) kids aren't welcome, neither am I."

A few years latter (maybe 4 yo or so) he knew he was in trouble. I fell in love with a matched set of 1st. gen Colt SAA. Both were nickled with ivory grips (details per his story about it), and consecutive sn's. Per his memory, the pair cost about $28k-$30k. I've had expensive tastes in guns for a long, long time.

Bring on the kids...as long as they behave. Get them started young, and you'll have fellow gun nuts, you'll enjoy time with, for the rest of your life.
