I was at Cabelas yesterday and they have the gun library where you can pretty much handle whatever you want without asking to see it as well as the 4 racks of used guns that aren't chained up. I walked over to see what they had used and 4 kids from about 17yo-22yo were pickup up the AR's making machine gun sounds, laughing, and one kid picks up a long gun and starts racking the slide or the bolt like he's rapid firing it (probably not good for the gun) they then make their way into the gun library where no one is working and pickup an M1 and start slamming the bolt opened and closed pointing it all over the place at their buddies and other people. I came a hair of saying something until idiot dad, brother, or uncle walks in and starts encouraging it. They then move to the $1000 lever guns and are attempting to rack the lever like a maniac holding it like a pistol grip shotgun.

Am i the only one who thinks you should have to ask an associate to see a firearm? I took it like they are used so who cares what happens to them when they put them out like that. It also seems that cabelas aren't an outdoorsman store they are more of a tourist attraction!

Sorry guys for the rant but that really ticked me off last night. About 10min into them acting like idiots and me and my buddy minding our own business looking at old Winchester lever guns in the gun library which he has a few of the gun library attendant comes over and asks me if i need help with something! I guess he didn't like how i kept looking at the stocks on 2 rifles trying to decide if i like monte carlo or classic for my next boyds purchase! :)

Well, I was with you on the terrible behavior of people old enough to be adults... but then you kind of just lost message there.
the reason i said the touristy part was it seems every time i go in there people aren't in there to buy guns, ammo, hunting gear they are in there to screw around. cabelas isn't cedar point. kids running a muck with the pop guns, one kid spit at me yesterday, mom and dad chasing kids around the store.

Seen it. People breaking open nice sxs or o/u shotguns and slamming them closed way too hard over and over. The problem may not be on cabelas but I'll take asking an associate over buying a firearm that's been beat to death by tire kickers. I like the store for the taxidermy (Im a tourist ;)) and ammunition.

My tourist comment was in no way to offend anyone. I have visited about 5 of them just cause i like the trip and the stores. the one by me is more soccer moms buying clothes, boats, pepper spray, kids running a muck, etc. the lady who's kid spit at me was a tourist.

I also appreciate being able to pick up, fondle, and closely examine guns without getting an associate but they should also be aware of people who can't or won't handle them properly and I would hope they could keep alert for that sort of horseplay. If I had a rack full of decent firearms for sale I sure wouldn't want them being abused like that.

It's really stupid to have guns on display where anyone can handle them without asking employees. That's a store I'd stay out of. Besides the idiot parents letting their kids play with them, what's to stop a nutcase from loading a gun in the store?

My first impression is that these were not kids. My second is that their dads taught them no respect for either firearms nor anyone else's property. I wish you would have said something to them.

I came close but the older guy with them was doing the same almost like none of them have ever seen or handled a gun before and i could tell by his attitude that if i had said something it would have started issues. My buddy made a comment about it out loud and they scampered off and 10 seconds later a worker appeared out of the office. There was a man and woman in there and even they had the what the concerned look as they were waving them around.

cabelas has trigger locks on all the out in the open stuff. I visited a shop last year that had all the used guns sitting on a rack with no locks, cables or anything on them. I noticed it and it kind of concerned me but the guy walking around the store with long gun and ammo in hand browsing at other things really put a bad taste in my mouth. I thought what's to stop someone from loading up one of these guns and having at it.

I can say for sure that not all of them do

Parents don't parent anymore. This explains no manners or respect for other people or other people's things. My ass would have been kicked if my dad would have seen that from me weather I was 17, 22 or not. Been in a grocery store lately around the tikes? It's the common new age. Everyone is special and entitled wherever we go. Sad. Oh and if these punks are hanging out at Cabelas I would bet the parents are a couple of rich snobs who don't have any respect either.

What's to keep them from loading firearms, if'n they're unsupervised?
Had a sales associate at the Cabela's in Gonzales perforate his hand in the gun room. I wondered how that happened. Now I know.

Also I understand this forum is about firearms only. This is about firearms in a retail store and behavior with them.

I like being able to handle the guns without needing to find an associate. Rather than saying that is the problem I would say that problem is in the fact that our society allows idiots like the ones you described to continue to be idiotsthe.

This is a very accurate statement. There is little to no respect for anyone else anymore. I saw it a lot when I worked for a local school district. The disrespect ran through all income levels.

Every kid is special and any behavior is ok. The parents always stand up for their kids regardless of what they did. All the bad kids are " Special Needs". That is code for a kid no one wants to deal with. The parents don't have rules or standards of societal behavior. Kids just reflect the upbringing they have at home. Sad.

I can't imagine that situation at my local Cabela's. What prevents a suicidal person from bringing their own ammunition? You might consider an email to the store...

Well since we can't do anything about the behavior of other people or their offspring in this particular scenario then the best thing for the gun store to do is to keep all the guns behind the counter and out of their reach. Would rather deal with the inconvenience of waiting on a sales clerk for assistance versus having the situation described by the OP or the possibility of something much worse happening.

This. It's a liability waiting to happen. I only hope there's no firing pins in them if they're going to be up for grabs.

What made this even better which i thought i mentioned above. this stores in a very high income neighborhood and as I'm trying to find something on a shelf a woman alone with 2 kids one sitting in the cart and the other in the baby seat of the cart comes walking by and shes looking at pepper spray and knives. I look over at the kid in the cart and the kid freaking spits at me. I kind of got a kick out of it like this little ..... just spit at me. I didn't get hit with anything but this is where i got the touristy feeling from. mommas going to mace you then stab you after she pulls it out of her gauche purse.

Don't blame the store, blame the parents.
I don't blame the store at all. As i said I've been to about 5 stores throughout the country and there is always someone standing by the used stuff to ensure a nice used firearm isn't being slammed around by kids or played with. I was a little shocked that no one was manning the gun library while beevis and butthead were picking up $1500-2000 rifles.

"...about 17yo-22yo..." Not exactly 'kids' either. However, if daddy condones the behaviour that's why the young bucks do it.
Might be why the M1 Rifles in Cabela's are such junkers at high prices though.
