On 11/13/10 I was at some family land a few miles north of Philadelphia, MS doing some work to get ready for the opening of rifle season. I figured while I was there I'd take a walk to try and kill a couple squirrels. The only gun I had was my mossberg 12 ga. with #6 shot. I was standing next to a big tree in a creek bottom looking for squirrels and I see 2 coyotes coming my way. They never see me and when they're within 20 yards of me I shot and killed this guy....he's now at the taxidermist.

Wow. I bet that was fun! Was that with a 28'' field barrel?
That was with the 28" barrel. It was very fun and exciting letting them get so close before the shot. I was back at the property for thanksgiving and heard more of them howling at night so maybe I'll try to make a coyote hunt after deer season and get another with my rifle.

OK, flame time.

I was out deer hunting last week and saw a large coyote walking by.

We've just gotten our first dog, which I love, and the coyote looked so dog like that although I had him in my crosshairs, I just couldn't pull the trigger. Last year I would have had no trouble.

I wasn't in an area with livestock, and I know they scare game away.

Got my deer a few days later.

Flame away!

jjr0419, just wondering, are coyotes rare in your area? just wondering why you would want one mounted, kind of expensive I would say...I mount the ones I kill by hanging them on the barbed wire fence.

The coyote you let live, is invariably someone's pet you forced to endure a cruel and painful death while being eaten alive. Perhaps your own.

Our neighbor has lost 6 dogs to coyotes. I kill them on sight.

He's at the TAXIDERMIST?!!! Geeze, I killed a big rat in the basement last week, maybe I shudda taken HIM to the taxidermist!!:neener:

Are whitetail rare in Texas? I bet Texans get whitetails mounted frequently nonetheless.

They are relatively new up here, not frequently seen and actually large and quite impressive looking animals. There was just an article (NYT or WSJ, I can't remember) detailing how northern coyote have interbred with wolves. The one I saw last year was about the size of a husky with a thick charcoal gray coat. If I get one that looks like that I'd consider getting it mounted.

Try explaining to your 7 year old that a roaming pack of coyotes viciously killed that new family dog, then you won't hesitate next time.

Not to lay a guilt trip on you... :neener:

I wasn't in an area with livestock,

Coyotes can roam as far as 10 or more miles.

So yeah, put the sucker down next time if you don't have anything better to do. :D

A friend of mine has one mounted in a display with his grandfather's black powder pistol and old holster. Looks pretty neat. To each his own!

Nice one! Get them coyotes any chance you can! As others said, they will kill and eat your pets, deer, rabbits, pheasants, etc. and on occasion have attacked and even killed humans. A few years ago I even saw them walking down the sidewalk and around the streets in my town (suburban, not a rural area).

The first time I ever saw a coyote in person was the first day of deer season (rifle) about 6 or 7 years ago. It walked right in front of me about 20-30 feet but I didn't shoot it because it was 7am on the first day of deer season and I didn't want to scare anything away with a shot. Well, I don't hesitate anymore. I figure that coyote will probably kill a fawn that could have grown up to be a nice buck that I could have taken when it got older.

Every time I shoot one I just think of all of the 'good' game animals and pets that I just saved!

yes shoot them 'yotes.. doglike or not. They kill anything, including family pets. I got no problem with mounting it either, your money :D

I've only seen one coyote up here in Idaho but I know there's more. I was out cutting wood one day with my 2 dogs. They have a great time racing around while I work my butt off. I cut 3 Toyota truck loads and was heading back into the woods after dropping a load off at home and I saw a big coyote cruising past. I thought how nice it is to see him. Then as I was driving back to my wood spot I thought, holy crap, my 2 dogs were just playing around right near here. They could've easily been coyote food. I didn't even think of shooting it to be honest. After reading this thread about how they attack pets I might look at things differently in the future. My dogs are included in my personal protection plan while in the woods.

jjr0419,just curious where you aimed on the dog.
There are a lot of people out there that are stunned to learn that a shotgun with a relatively light game load can do such a thing to something bigger than a bird or rabbit.
I am not one of them.

I was also thinking about the load used at that distance. Good work, glad it worked for you.
I despise coyotes.

Me either, several times out pheasant hunting I've dropped a coyote that blindly walks in on me with whatever load I am carrying at the time (4, 5, or 6 shot 20ga or 12ga). I got one a few years ago with steel 4's out of a duck blind. These were all really close shots of course.

Then there are the ones I've dropped with centerfire rifles out big game hunting. Funnily, the few times I've gone coyote hunting specifically I didn't see any :)

Beats me. Just a photo I remembered seeing on the 'net, so I googled for it. Bet that old barn smells kinda funky.

rondog, you mean those aren't your's? Just joking about the $30 worth of yotes. Around here a big prime coyote pelt handled as well as those in your pic wouldn't be worth the time it took to hang them up. That represents a LOT of hard work! Pelting a fox or a 'cat is easy but a coyote is very tough to skin.

I tried to mount a yote one time ........she bit me!! just kiddin.I think a rug would be cool.
