killed a coyote while squirrel hunting

I decided to have him mounted because he wasn't busted up from the shot. And yes, it is kind of expensive but I've seen a couple coyote mounts and liked them. Any more of them that I kill will certainly not be mounted.

jjr0419,just curious where you aimed on the dog.
There are a lot of people out there that are stunned to learn that a shotgun with a relatively light game load can do such a thing to something bigger than a bird or rabbit.
I am not one of them.

I shot him just behind the shoulder. He didn't take one step after the shot.

I have hunted yotes since I could walk, they never got any of my dogs, hounds tear them into little tiny pieces :) It is kinna creepy the damage those very plesent Walker hounds do to them. You would not think they would hurt a fly but let them catch a yote and there will be blood and hair and little chunks of meat/guts all over the place. A friend of mine has a full blood timberwolf that kills yotes all night and drags them into the yard to show off his handi work.

bird shot placement on a song dog? same as a big tom turkey. put a load of # 6 in the head at less than 25 yards from a full choke 12 gauge. works every time. with a good pattern you should get 20+ pellets in the head for a sure kill.

In sheep and goat country, yodel dogs do tremendous damage. I know of one ranch where there was a 60% kid crop the first year of stocking. After a winter's intense predator control efforts, the next crop was 80%. That was an additional 200 goats at a market price (back in those days) of about $50 each when mature. The school taxes on that ranch were $4,000 per year.

I hit one with my pickup once, coming home from the range. It didn't take another step either. Does that count?

When I was waiting for the shot I was thinking maybe I could shoot him in the head. I was unsure of that so I figured I couldn't go wrong putting it behind the shoulder.

Nice shot. I coyotes I hunt in Iowa & Wisconsin have a much thicker pelt this time of the year, due to the colder winters. Man, do they get fluffy! Makes the animal look a lot larger, but underneath all that fur I'd bet they're probably about the same size as your southern yotes. It’s common knowledge that the farther north you go the bigger the deer tend to be. But I’ve never heard the same said for coyotes. Not sure why. Anyone with firsthand knowledge?
