I have been passively looking around for a 1911 pistol for a while. I still plan to buy a micro-compact .380 ACP or 9mm Para before buying a 1911, but I plan to do plenty of research and handling (unfortunately not firing, because my local gun shops have very few rentals) before deciding to buy one.

After looking around for a while, I think I have decided on the Kimber CDP II. I plan to originally buy an Ultra variant for conceal carry, and then a Custom (full-size) variant for home defense and range shooting. Even though I've never owned a 1911 before, I do like the custom features that come with this particular model, and I've handled it under several occasions (and absolutely love it). The looks of the CDP II line are also something I find very attractive.

However, reading on forums some, I have seen a good amount of distaste for the Kimber brand. I take all forum criticism for what it is: forum criticism. I've heard about their (failed) attempt at external extractors, and it seems rightfully so. But after switching back to internal extractors, they still get a lot of crap. What's the reasons for this? I've heard great things about the quality and accuracy. And holding them myself (again, I haven't shot 'em), the build seems very solid.

Also, just to add some more discussion, what other 1911 brands should I be seriously looking at? I do have a couple of "requirements" for the guns I'm looking for: I want to have a matching 3" and 5" versions and the guns have to be chambered for .45 ACP (this should go without saying). And while looks aren't the most important thing with a self defense pistol (and shouldn't be), with the money that I plan to pay for a quality 1911, I want an attractive style. I don't sway either way when it comes to a firing pin block (I can do with or without). Having not owned a 1911 before, I don't have many other "set in stone" preferences.

EDIT: I'm sure this website is tired of "Which 1911" threads. But the intention of this post is to be more of a "Why not Kimber?" thread. However, I've seen a lot of anti-Kimber posters. And I would like a reason as to why, and comparable alternatives if applicable.

I think the CDP is a fine gun, and a Compact CDP has been my carry gun for years now. I'd look for a Series I gun first (like I have), then a series II.

I have never owned or fired a Kimber, but one thing to keep in mind is how many damn 1911's they sell. They sell more than most of their competitors combined, iirc. Therefore, you're going to hear a lot more criticism of their 1911's than any other manufacturer, since they're selling so many more.

The CDP is a fine gun. Kimber sells tons of 1911's. Assembly line style. Not as much hand fitting as more expensive pistols. Any 1911 under $1000 has the possibility of trouble every bit as much as a Kimber.

I recommend looking for a 1911 that'll fit both the roles of the 2 your interested in. Sounds like your looking for a mouse gun, and a midsize 1911, and a fullsize 4-5" 1911. I'd recommend just getting a 4-5" 1911 and a Kahr p380 for a mousegun.

My fullsize 5" Kimber CDP has worked well for me after it was broken in. Get Tripps mag rebuild kit with a proper follower & spring. Or get Wilson or Tripp mags, DO NOT use the stock Kimber mags. They will eat away at the CDP's aluminum frame.

If you don't mind spending a bit more the DW Valor, VBOB, and CCO are excellent 1911's.

I have both a Kimber Ultra CDP II and a Kimber Crimson Trace Ultra II, both are outstanding guns!! But you mention a 380 mouse gun... just purchased a Sig Sauer P238 Equinox... OUTSTANDING mouse gun!! I do not use it as a pocket gun (have a Ruger LCP) but rather on a OWB concealed carry holster!! It is a jewel and very comfortable to carry!! Something to consider.

I have a CDP Ultra that is awesome. Runs 100%, and has from round one.

Wow, I didn't realize that Kimber sold that many 1911s. Is there any source to confirm this (I'd be interested to see the actual numbers, and that of the other manufactures)? Had I known that, I would probably have ignored most of the Kimber haters. Haha. Too much of anything will yield haters (as proven with the Glock line of pistols).

How is Kimber's customer support? Any tales from members here (good or bad)?

i have a kimber ss pro carry 4" in .45 with night sights and am verry pleased with it. it is comfortable to carry & can double as home defense. i sold my 5" smith after i found out how much i loved the 4-4.25" commander size 1911"s.

More research, more questions...

I keep hearing from multiple places that the stock magazines from Kimber are not very good quality. Any truth behind this? And reasons why? And, if they really aren't great, where should I look elsewhere to get magazines that would work well with the Kimber CDP models?

My Kimber TEII is my favorite pistol at the moment. I'm rapidly approaching 500 trouble free rounds with Wilson Combat magazines. I recently spent some money and time upgrading most of the parts in it with Ed Brown, Wilson Combat and Cylinder & Slide parts. I removed all the firing pin safety parts as well. The frame, slide, barrel, grip safety, magazine release (for now), magwell and sights or all Kimber but the rest isn't. It's because I like this Kimber so much that I decided to splurge on it. There's a very good chance that it would have continued to function flawlessly for many thousands rounds in stock form, but where's the fun in that?! This won't be my last Kimber ... I'm sure of it.

:)

Yes, there are Kimber haters. Like Harmon inferred, a higher number of complaints does not equal a higher rate of failure. I rented a Nighthawk at a range, and it jammed up on me, and that gun cost more then three times what my Kimber did.

My Custom II is the best handgun I have ever owned. I would use it for everything including war if I were allowed to.

A lot of people hate Kimber because they use some Metal Injection Molded (MIM) parts. When this process is done incorrectly, the parts are weaker and more likely to break. After many thousands of rounds, I have never had a problem. Many more thousands of rounds with a .22 conversion kit. In all fairness, my dad bought a Springfield that I like just fine, and if I were looking to replace mine, I would look hard at an STI Spartan.

My Ultra CDP II is four years old with no problems. Great gun. A natural pointer for me. I do recommend you use magazines with rounded or polymer followers. It will save chipping on the feedramp. Internal extractor on mine. I shoot all types of reloads through it with no feeding problems at all.

I have a plain Custom II, and a Compact CDP II. Both have been 100% reliable since day one. I have no complaints.

I would suggest as others have, getting some Wilson or Tripp magazines.

yes my kimber magazine was not 100% out of the box i switched to wilsons and use the kimber only for range work. i don't know why the kimber mags don't work but my wilsons & my act/novacs run perfectly. it isn't a big deal for me since they only give you one of their crappy mags anyway.
