So this morning I decided would be a good day to sleep in. No children, last day off work before another 24 hour shift and nothing urgent on the agenda. Sounds pretty ideal for a lazy day, right? Well, I don't typically answer phone numbers that I don't recognize, however, I have my Jeep posted for sale on several sites and I figure maybe I'm getting a call about it at 10am. I answer and the man on the line asks if this is Britton and then proceeds to tell me that my Kimber a micro Raptor in all black has come in today. ABOUT TIME! So I get up and put myself together and take my happy butt to the LGS. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning, obviously. I pay off my balance as well as buying a box of R.I.P. ammo as its a smaller caliber and if I ever have to use it, I want any and all hits to be as effective as possible.
I got the opportunity to hold one of the micro series pistols prior to buying, except it wasn't the raptor model. My initial reaction is that this pistol is everything I expected it to be. Beautiful finish and the extra machine work on the slide and grip feel incredible. I have smaller hands so it's fairly comfortable for me without having an extended mag, although I think it would only benefit me to go ahead and purchase so that I have no pinkie finger overhang.
The night sights are bright and beautiful. The action is smooth and the trigger pull is a bit heavy but very very crisp at the break. I'm anxious to shoot a few of the R.I.P. rounds so that I can rest a bit easier knowing that it will cycle without any hiccups. I will also be buying a box or two of ball ammo after my next payday as I have other obligations that are higher up on the list than a few boxes of ammo. I currently only have one picture, but I intend on taking more and a bit of video when I'm able to go to the range.
I'll try to find a common item that everybody can relate to so that the size is more tangible since you guys don't know how big (or small) my hands are.

Also, two things I should note, one of the wood grips is slightly loose and has a bit of play which causes it to click of I put pressure forward and backward (from hammer to muzzle). I may contact Kimber to see if they can send me a replacement. I do plan on buying a set of all black synthetic grips for it anyway so that's to be determined at this time.
The second thing that I want to mention is that this pistol is weighted perfectly (as I assume all mustang designs are) and can easily be pocketed, however I came to the conclusion that this is NOT the way I would want to carry as it got snagged on my pocket each time I went to remove it. I'm thinking an ankle holster will be the route I take for when I begin to carry.

Feel free to ask any questions or suggest what you would like me to video. I.e. Accuracy at distance, the frangible ammo being used on various objects etc...

That's a sweet little gun.
I have a Sig 238 SaS. Very similar.

Extended mags feel better to me, but flush mags shoot better for me. Not sure why.
Maybe my pinky finger messes up my shots.

My wood grips were also loose even with the grip screws tight. I just put a little blue
loctite on the screws between the screws and grips, not on the threads. After it dried,
no more loose grips.

As for carrying the little jewel, I just use a leather belt holster. The gun hides fine under
a tee shirt.

Very nice looking Micro Raptor. I have an older Colt Mustang and a newer SIG P238 so I'm pretty well set with pocket size .380s for the time being. The Mustang has the better trigger but the P238 has the better sights. Still I'm always interested in downsized 1911s like this so I would be interested to know how it does with a some more rounds through it. Please keep us updated as to it's performance.

Congratulations! That's a good picture of a handsome gun.

[EDIT: You already have this covered and are going to get a box of ball, too.]

Let us know how it goes! Thanks for testing and sharing your findings.

I'm working today, but tomorrow I plan on going to my folks house to shoot about 10 rounds of that expensive frangible ammo and I'll try and get the best bang for my buck (pun certainly intended) out of those 10 shots. I'll probably take 2 shots from distance (about 40 yds), 3 shots in rapid succession at close range and will try and take some shots at a watermelon or other similar type fruit to test out the lethality of the round itself. Or at least get some idea of how well they work. I'll do my best to get this all on film and I'll upload it to YouTube and post the link.

Edit: the holster I think I'll be going with is a Desantis ankle holster because it will most likely be the best way for me to conceal it while I'm at work.

If you do carry in your pocket, a pocket holster that covers the thumb safety a must, if you are carrying in condition 1.

My Kimber is the STS model and functions just as it was intended. I did have a recent problem with the slide not going fully into battery once but a new style recoil spring and guide provided by Kimber resolved the problemm. Along with the Kimber Micro I have three P 238's, a P 938, Mustang and a couple dozen Star DK and FI model D pistols. Neat thing is the magazines mostly interchange. Love the micro size powerhouses.

Condition 1 with a SAO pistol means one round in the chamber, hammer cocked, and thumb safety engaged. Also known as Cocked and Locked.

I have a DeSantis SOF-TUCK IWB holster for my Mustang and P238 and it does a great job of concealment and is very comfortable to carry.

I was looking at the Apache ankle rig. I think it'll probably be the best thing for me. I'll let you know what I think about it.

Yeah I'm pretty much a belt holster guy for the most part with the occasional shoulder holster (usually with revolvers), thrown in the mix. Would like to hear about how the DeSantis Apache ankle rig goes in terms of comfort, concealability, security, and ease of use.

Being a Kimber I doubt if you will get thru 10 rounds of RIP with out problems. Kimber want you to shoot several 100 rounds of ball to break their guns in.

So you will need to spend a lot of money to get what my Colt Mustang did from box. Work !

I also get a good HP ammo. Not over priced Hype ammo with no record of working in real shootings.

I've never had a Kimber that needed to "break in" including my little Micro 380.

I've literally seen what R.I.P. Ammo can do first hand. Literally, with my own two eyes....even tasted the blood in the air. Not a pretty sight at all.

Edit: I should just clarify that it was a 911 call I worked lol. I wasn't the one that pulled the trigger!

Way to come in and congratulate him on his new purchase.

If the RIP is what you're comfortable carrying then by all means do so, but if you read (or watch on youtube) some of the testing folks are doing, XTP jacketed hollow points seem to be much more effective, and you can get them loaded by hornady, fiocchi, and HPR, and generally much cheaper than the RIP.

Here's a good series if you're interested....

Forgot to add, it appears as if that gun uses grip bushings like a 1911. The screws that go through the grip, go into a bushing that is threaded and screws into the frame of the gun. I take the grips off and make sure the bushing is seated and see if that doesn't take care of the grip rocking under pressure.

Just a quick update for now until I can get home to my Mac. I'm sitting here writing with a general sense of frustration, anger and disgust. So, before I began carrying this pistol loaded with the G2 R.I.P. Ammo I wanted to test fire an entire magazine. Tonight, before it got dark, I decided to go put a magazine into a plate and I figured I would record it since I said that I would take a short clip and upload it to YouTube.
To make a short story a bit more short and to the point, first round I've ever squeezed the trigger on is now lodged firmly mid-barrel. I'm pissed off. I don't feel that Kimber is to blame as the video will show that when the firing pin struck the primer, the G2 gave a less than impressive "poot". Tried to unstick the round with a cleaning rod and was unsuccessful. I'll be taking this to my LGS in the morning to have them pound it out for me.

Hope it works out great for you.

SoonerMedic,

That sucks about your gun. I had no idea those little Kimbers ran that much. I'd be pissed too.

A suggestion and a comment-

1. More than one mag through a gun before carrying is probably advocated by most on here, especially given your current circumstances.

2. I hope your head wasn't behind the camera that took that photo. Even given the perceived malfunction, that's never a good idea.

Good luck with your gun.

I checked several times after removing the magazine and locking the slide to make sure the pistol was clear. And as for the firing part, that's why I was out shooting tonight lol. And this confirms why shooting prior to carrying is paramount!
