Get this . . .
It is an offence to market a knife in a way which indicates that it is suitable for combat, or is otherwise likely to stimulate violent behaviour.
So it seems that a lot of the pictures of knives that appear in U.S. gun rags are prohibited there, too.

Hmmm . . . I wonder if the limeys will make it illegal to surf the internet too, lest some poor Brit be influenced by sites that advertise things like commando knives and bayonets . . .

It will never work...

what our British friends really need is a "knife buy back program" ala the great city of Chicago. Turn in your knives for cash, concert tickets, or Nike shoes. This will have the good citizens of England lining up to turn in their dangerous edged weapons. With their excellent gun controll laws and now their edged weapon controll laws England will soon be a safe haven for freedom loving people everywhere!

One question... how am I gonna cut my 20 oz. Porterhouse?

That will hardly matter once they outlaw teeth.

John G., you now owe me 3.5 ounces of coffee, as I am finding it impossible to recover it in a palatable state from my monitor screen. ;)

(Edited to add) It's a shame that he's probably not nearly as far off the mark as some people think..England really is that bad!

Absolutely it is. We're just inches away from banning exhalation on global warming grounds. I weep for the birthplace of Elton John and Cliff Richard.

These threads always turn into a collection of driveby smartass comments and mock eulogies, I thought I'd add mine,

You know what I find funny about this?

It's not the Absurdity of it or the comments in referance to it.

Its the fact that since 2003 when I was living in the UK I was Dismissed by many as a Nut for Saying things like this were in the works.

And now look what happens less than 3 years later....

This is writing on the wall, 1st its a Gun ban, than a knife ban.

Whats next? baseball bat?, ban, golf club ban? hockey stick ban? :cuss: :banghead:

A blizzard starts with one snowflake

:)

I don't care any more. First it was funny. Then we realised it was real, and it was astounding. Then it was sad. Eventually it became funny again, in a pittiful way. Now, it's not even funny any more. But fear not, I'm going there tomorrow and will take pics.

I find Britain to be a rediculous place. They've become so afraid of weapons, somebody with a pigsticker must go to prison for 4 years if caught by the occifers and constables in Britain.

Oh well.

Too bad avian flu doesn't affect only British politicians.

"The message of this campaign is simple - if you think you're protecting yourself by carrying a knife, you're not. Too many people think that carrying a knife will make them safer but the reality is quite the opposite as they run the real risk of having the knife turned back on them.

"Every weapon handed in is a weapon that can't be used in crime. I want to see people recognising the dangers of carrying a knife and using this opportunity to dispose of it before the police take action against them.

"Ordinary law-abiding citizens don't want to see their communities blighted by violence. Neither do we. We are working across Government to reduce crime and reduce the fear of crime through legislation, law enforcement and closer working with communities. The knife amnesty will help us achieve that."

Substitute "gun or handgun" every place it says knife or weapon. Reads the same and it worked before. Please keep us safe from ourselves!!! Is it limey or lambie?

To think our forefathers mostly came from there. Sad.

>Actually, she stole the Bull and 50 heifers

Oh! Now I see why that was the most important incident in Irish history.

In all seriousness, just like the Icelandic sagas which are often about some trivial squabble, it goes to show how some societies really didn't spend their time in mass religious warfare all the time. Or on trying to collect all the @#$%ing sharp objects, either...

At least its voluntary-for now. Unlike guns, which require skill to home make, anyone will always be able to make a pointy thing for defense pretty easily. Notice how many shanks are made each year in correctional facilities.

Unlike guns, which require skill to home make

Tell the Afghans. I mean, you're right, but seriously, it's not that hard. The criminals will always have AKs and other crude weapons. Only the law-abiding won't have guns.

BTW, this is a great issue to bring up in any gun debate here. There aren't too many Americans willing to give up their flint tools. Yet.

Ya know the sad thing is, what I tend to see most often is wounds caused by knives which would still be legal after the ban, such as box cutters, razor knives, extendable snap-off blade knives (the kind that click out longer and longer?)
After All, wasn't the 9/11 terrorists armed with box cutters?

They are most certainly under 3" in length. But I have seen people with wicked slashes from those especially kids in school.

I never thought I would say this, but I think that France would kick England's ass badly in a standup fight. That hasnt happened since like the 8th century.

I think the problem came in two phases. And by 2 phases, I mean 5:
1) English fight in the trenches in WWI. Dont enjoy it.

2) English noblemen foolishly fear a Russian style peasant uprising (despite 500 years of completely different history and a different culture) and adopt socialism to head off what they feel is otherwise inevitable violence.

3) After WWII, English begin emigrating to US because unlike the rest of the world, it hasnt been utterly destroyed by the fighting.

4) Combination of brain drain + socialism = yuck. Clement Atlee happens. More people leave.

5) Gun ban, knife ban, etc.

One thing that strikes me as odd is that my 14 year old cousin is learning marksmanship at school as some sort of junior infantryman class. He gets to shoot an SA80, but not bring it home with him. He also seemed very pro-shooting-burglars, so he must not have been totally brainwashed. Maybe there is hope.

Never fear. There are still some enterprising, well-armed individuals left in the UK. The criminals. I raise my glass to them, and wish them the best of luck fleecing the flock. 'Cause at this point, the only cure for what ails Britain short of another Hitler to threaten them is a little bit of the ol' ULTRAVIOLENCE.

Man, what can you even say about this? I guess this is a bit more of Britannia stumbling off the world stage into the orchestra pit, drunk and insensate.

So very, very sad.

All you people that badmouth Not So Great Britain, I submit this: Their weapon control is exactly like ours, just a few years further advanced. A freer country could level the same ridicule at us.
