I had a Series 70 Colt Gold Cup that was very accurate, especially with match ammo, right out of the box. Had a very nice, clean, and light trigger pull too. Can't speak to current production Gold Cups but two recently purchased Colt Governments have been decent as well in terms of intrinsic accuracy.
Para Ordnance is very accurate and one of the better values in the GI Expert. If money is no object Wilson Combat. S&W, Kimber, and Ruger are also good. Colts are my favorite but mine are all older.
I would cast another vote for Les Baer, but I worked for him for 21 years so I feel I should excuse myself from the discussion. I am not unbiased. Price should be figured into the equation I think. It is not fair to compare an entry level gun to a custom shop product at twice the price.
I also wouldn't concern myself should Colt's financial difficulties cause the company to no longer be in the near future. There are more than enough parts and gunsmiths out there who can service any and all make of 1911 for a very long time to come.
Recently acquired an STI Escort, 3 1/4" barrel 9mm, and right out of the box went thru several boxes of factory FMJ without a single malfunction. Have since graduated to reloads with same results after finding what load it needed to cycle properly (5.0gr 231 115gr HP & FMJ). Way more accurate than I'm capable of.
