El Dorado boy shot
By STEVE SMITH Times Staff Writer
An 11-year-old rural El Dorado boy was injured early Monday evening when a .410 gauge shotgun he and his 12-year-old brother were handling discharged.
Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy said the incident occurred at about 5:20 p.m. and occurred at a location northwest of El Dorado on Highway 196.
At this point, he said, the shooting incident looks to be accidental and more than likely unintentional.
However, he said, a final determination will be made by the Butler County Attorney's Office.
Murphy said investigation of the incident has basically been completed. Investigators are now compiling their reports, he said, and will be conferring with the County Attorney's Office.
He said the injured boy was transported in critical condition to HCA Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He said investigators would be checking with the hospital later this morning to check on his welfare.
Murphy said the incident occurred in the living room area of the house.
He said the 11-year-old was struck in the back shoulder area when the shotgun discharged.
According to initial reports investigators received, he said, it is believed that occurred when the older brother threw the gun on a couch.

I guess the only good thing is that it was a 410 (and not a .410 as stated in the article).
