L.A.R. Grizzly

Anybody got a L.A.R Grizzly? What would one in prime shape be worth? How much are extra mags? What about shooting that puppy? I've seen one in .44 Mag and also .45 Win Mag. Any weaknesses? Tell me what you know! Thanks!

I owned one about 10 years ago. Came in 45 Win Mag and with 45 ACP Conversion Kit (Barrel and Mags.) It had a parkerized finish and I had it hard chromed. Took me forever to break it in (maybe 500 rounds). After that the gun was reliable as can be. That thing was so heavy that it handled the Win Mags with easy. Conversion to 45 ACP was easy - Change Spring, Barrel and Magazine. 45 ACP felt like a soft 9mm in that gun. I sold it when I moved and needed the money. My gun was mint and I got around 1800 for it with 6 magazines.

Now I wish I had never sold it.

I work with a a BUNCH of guys who were from LAR...SLC UT area, and they all have them. If you look around, at least around here, you can get them for around 1000$.......check out gunsamerica.

Beleive it or not, I have a friend Who shot himself in the leg with a L.A.R. Griz. 230gr. hardcast bullet still inside after about 10 years too. He did a triple summersolt, picked up the gun (it went off after sliding off the hood of his company truck, he was on the clock too) and drove himself to a main road to call medics on the company radio. He actually got back out of the truck to pick up his spare mag's and ammo. His wifey made him sell it.

The ONE gun I always wanted. It rescued the .45 Win Mag round after the Wildey introduced it along with the 9mm Mag. Back then the Grizzly was much cheaper than the Wildey, actually about half the price. Still too much for my budget. Now, of course, I wish I had spent it.

I picked up one in 44 Magnum. It's a sort of uber-1911 and has what looks like a Millet adjustable sight on it. Really solid piece of work. I shot a couple magazines thru it yesterday. The revolver cartridges feed well and it exhibits minute of bambi accuracy at 100 yards offhand. I was making a couple chunks of wood awful uncomfortable at the 100 yard mark. Fun gun!

As an FYI, for those of you that own the Grizzly, there is a complete 10mm conversion for sale on one of the auction boards. I don't remember which one, but it was one of the following:

I have the Griz in .44 magnum also, its great! It feeds .44 Specials (indoor shooting) as well as .44 magnums. I have NEVER seen another one for sale since.

Gee, Telewinz, I guess that makes us blood brothers, so to speak. I didn't know it would operate with lower pressure .44 Special. Did you have to change anything or just load up with either or?

I use hot .44 Specials or normal loads (200 & 240 grains) with lead SWC reloads. It made no difference, it has fed all loads regardless of bullet design and case length and has functioned perfectly for over 12 years now. I believe the main reason is the "extra" quality in the design that lines the cartridge up with the center of the chamber instead of the feed ramp. It will also feed empty cases, by hand of course. About 10 years ago I let my son (11) and a friend shoot full-house .44 magnum reloads in it, they walked away believing the .44 was a mild pussycat! Hows that for felt recoil! You can also mix .44 Specials with .44 Magnums in the same magazine, the only load I haven't tried is lead wadcutters but I believe they would feed just fine also. Shotshells will feed just fine but will not cycle the action. Its a real nice "one gun" arsenal and built to last several lifetimes.
