I started a thread for members of military to put some info down on rank and years served, plus some a personal opinion of the weapons they were issued. So I am starting one for LEO's on thr. Please put...

1. personal experience as a LEO
2. years in law enforcement
3. weapons used/issued/bought
4. short personal opinion of the gun/guns you use/used.

p.s. I have a high respect for all law enforcement officers, and I am thankful that there are guys who are willing to do such a stressful job.

i have an odd feeling that you're not going to get as much response as your military thread did.

many LEO would rather you not know where they serve

1) Sorry, due to politics I doubt you'll see too many officers answering this first question. Suffice it to say that I work in a high-crime area in a city environment. Judging by my screen name, it might be fair for you to assume that I'm in Colorado.

2) Between 5 and 10 years with this department (again, providing too much information can be potentially dangerous to my career, given the current political environment).

3) For duty use I've always carried a Glock. I also have a S&W M&P15T, and a Remington 870 for use at work.

4) I love the Glocks. I've never had a single failure with my duty weapon, and it works well for its intended purpose. I've had it muddy, I've had it submerged in water (NOT shot in water), and I've shot nearly a thousand rounds between cleanings. The weapon is easy to maintain, it is quickly cleaned, and parts are available when you need them.

The MP15T hasn't given me any problems. It is accurate and reliable, and I really like the trigger when compared to my Bushmaster, or the Colt I was previously issued. I have found that the safety selector is much more firm on this gun than the others I've used, but it isn't to the point that it slows you down when sweeping the safety.

The Remington 870 is a classic police shotgun. Mine is department issued, and looks like someone probably used it in the past as a canoe paddle (or should have). Regardless, it works fine. I actually prefer the location of the safety and slide release on my Mossberg shotgun (which isn't authorized at work), but that could just stem from the fact that I grew up shooting the Mossy long before I was in law enforcement.

Been in a couple years with Phoenix.

My duty weapons are a Glock 22 and a Bushmaster AR-15 carbine.

My Glock has run great. I have been thinking of upgrading to a 21 but I shoot my 22 so well Im really hesitant.

My Bushmaster is one of the "David Spade" rifles and had two problems initially. Out of the box the selector lever was EXTREMELY tight and I had to adjust my grip to work it. Also there was something wrong with the trigger return spring and I had to push it forward almost every shot to reset it. The armorer guys fixed both easily and I havent had a problem yet. Its been 100 percent reliable and that includes the initial rifle class that has you shoot a few thousand rounds over 4 days. I cleaned it after every day and oiled it then and thats all that was needed. Its also a pretty accurate rifle with my compact ACOG on it.

2. years in law enforcement

15+

3. weapons used/issued/bought

Issued Glock G23 and a G27
Available as needs require- AR15s (currently have DPMS and Bushmasters) and Mossberg 590s

My personal guns mirror those same makes and models.... plus a few others.

Years ago, we had Glock G19s and G26s.

4. short personal opinion of the gun/guns you use/used.

They are dependable. The current inventory is about 8 yrs old and we'll likely be replacing the Glocks. I hope we just get new Glocks instead of transitioning to a different make. I don't want to think how hard it would be to instruct a transition course.

Most of the force has used Glocks for so long, it'd be hard for some of them to learn a new gun. After all, a lot of officers aren't exactly "gunnies". ;)

Retired 6 months ago after 40 years on the job, 22 to 62.

We bought our weapons, but were restricted to Model 19 or 26 9mm Glocks, or .38SPL S&W or Colt revolvers for those grandfathered in and who chose to stay with them.

I personally was thrilled when we transitioned over to the Glocks and never looked back. Sold my duty revolvers with no regrets. Why carry a 5 shot S&W Chief when I can carry an 11 shot Glock 26?

1. personal experience as a LEO
Got into Law Enforcement as a second career after years in higher ed. Moved to a small college town in a rural community and started this different career path; and I feel lucky to have had a very good experience in LE.

2. years in law enforcement
Started as a Reserve Deputy 2.5 years ago; served a year (concurrently) in Corrections then went to the road full time.

3. weapons used/issued/bought
Issued a Glock .40 cal of my choice--I chose a 35. After my first year's probation I had the option to switch to a personally purchased gun of choice; purchased and carry a Wilson Combat CQB with rail and Streamlight TLR-1.
Also issued an Olympic Arms M4gery (which has proven extremely reliable when I keep it clean) and a bright orange-stocked 870 exclusively for beanbags.

4. short personal opinion of the gun/guns you use/used.
The Glock--be it a 35 or any other I've shot--is a marvelously useful gun; I just don't get any pleasure from shooting it, and I want my carry gun to be something I enjoy shooting. The 1911 fills that role. Off duty, I still often carry a Glock 19--with reluctant respect for its carryability, useability, and reliability.
As for my carbine, I only wish I could use a red dot; for some reason I haven't broached with the brass yet, we are restricted to irons. I did upgrade to an XS tritium dot for the front sight (and a TLR-1 on a front sight-post mounted rail) and like this sight for a CQB rifle, but a RDS would be faster and betterer.

2. years in law enforcement:
About 3

3. weapons used/issued/bought:
Standard issue is a Beretta 92G. With the tactical shotgun class, you get a department issued Remington 870. That is as far as the no-charge issue weapons go. If you take the tactical rifle class or qualify with a BUG, it has to be an approved personal gun. I carry a Glock 26 as a BUG and Bushmaster XM15 E2S as a patrol rifle.

4. short personal opinion of the gun/guns you use/used:
All of the guns mentioned are excellent guns with an extensive track record. I've never had any problems with any of the guns; they all went "bang" and hit what I was aiming at. I re-read the OP and noticed it said "short personal opinion," so I went ahead and deleted the longest part of my post lol. :)

1. medium sized Sheriff's department - 1200 officers

2. 28 years when i retired a couple of years ago

3. when i started they issued the S&W M-15, when i retired they were issuing your choice of the Sig 226/229/239 in 9mm or .40. the long gun was a Rem 870

i always carried a personally owned pistol which ranged from a Colt Python, through a Colt Commander, HK P-7, Sig 226 and 220, Beretta 92/96

4. the guns our department issued were always serviceable and there was a wide range of approved optional guns you could purchase. their selection of issue ammo was somewhat less so as it included the 147gr 9mm and the 180gr .40 and was usually piggybacked on the state purchase. before we went to a issued semi-auto pistol, many officers carried a personally owned Glock 19...which was later banned for safety issues

my last issued duty gun was the best general LE gun IMO. i carried a Sig 226R 9mm loaded with Ranger SXT 127gr +P+. it was very accurate and reliable

More than 2 years, less than 5

Taurus 66 .38, Taurus PT99 9mm, RIA 1911 .45

Revolver is super reliable, has a great feel with the monogrip I installed. The 99 has become my favorite carry weapon and its 17+1 capacity is awesome. The 1911 is my 'old reliable'.

1. personal experience as a LEO

see #2

2. years in law enforcement

Police Officer, 4 years, same department
Federal Agency (mostly investigations), 27 years been assigned to 8 states during that time
Became a Firearms Instructor after a police officer 2 years and by the time I retired from the Federal Government it was about 80-90% of my job.

3. weapons used/issued/bought

Not in any particular order

S&W 10 (a couple of them), 19, 36 (a couple of them), 49, 60, 64, 66, 640, 649, 659, 6906/Ruger Security Six, Speed Six,P90/1911/Glock 17,19,26/Walther PP and PPKS/Taurus 85, 669, PT99AF/ M1 and M2 Carbine/ Winchester Model 12/ Remington 870/ M14, M16, M4/Steyr AUG/MP5

These are what I carried on duty at one time or another. There were also a couple of 25s I carried for BUG or deep concealment.

4. short personal opinion of the gun/guns you use/used.

I liked them all and would feel well armed with any of them except the AUG. The AUG is the most over-rated weapon I've ever used.

I guess it is all in perspective here, but I did get a bit of a laugh out of the portion of your post that I quoted... 1,200 officers is pretty large for this section of the country, but I suppose it is a bit on the small side for you, given your proximity to a U.S. coastline, and the cities that grow in those areas!

Not LEO

But, I have sevearl friends that are. I had the PRIVILEGE of doing a 12 hour shift with a close friend that happens to be a sgt, at night in Michigans second largest city. I have ALWAYS had great respect for LEO, but after doing the ride along, that respect has multiplied by 1000. Thank you all for your service, I cant imagine doing the job you are willing to do, while being basically neutuerd (sp). You have my utmost respect, each and everyone of you. Thank you and God bless...Matt

1. See my web Page: http://www.armsmaster.net-a.googlepages.com/

2. 4 years as a Coast Guard LEO, 18years as a City LEO. 18 years concurrent with the city as a National Guard M.P. My career was ended by an on duty back injury after a shooting.

3. Coast Guard 1911A1 45 Auto, M-1 Carbine and Garand, Browning Air cooled Machinegun. City PD personal 38spl M&P with issued 158gr lead round nose until Jurras made the 110gr SuperVels, Colt Trooper MKIII as s&w mod 19's were Priority th men going to Vietnam, Issue S&W Mod 15 with The FBI LSWCHP then later the Treasury 110gr+P+ and a mod 19 2 1/2 inch as backup later. 1911 off duty. M.P.'s 1911A1, M-16 w/M-203 attached and later Beretta 9mm with 16/203

4. For their time they were all good weapons the M&P was power limited but it was 50 years old when I started carrying it. The Trooper MK III .357 I regret selling but it has been replaced by 2 Davis Tuned S&W586's I still have my issue Mod 15 .38spl as when I retired they were switching to the Sig 9mm's. 1911 or 1911A1 have always been great guns M-16 is ok but I prefer a Garand or M-14 to it. Mod 19 has always been a good choice.
