E-4(Spec 4)
US Army (Infantry)
2 years (drafted) served in S. Vietnam 68-69 4th Inf Div
I used the M-16 and the M-79 Grenade Launcher. Both good weapons.I had a firing pin break in a 79 after a firefight. My 16 was kept clean.I got there after the gunpowder in the M193 was changed back to the original powder.
I am now completly disabled from that war.I consider it one of the highest Honors of my life to have served with the men of D Co,3/8th Inf and lead by one incredible CO, Capt (retired a Major) Milton C. Daughertry. While others were avoiding the draft in various ways, I felt I could not turn my back on my Country. Byron

Armoredman, my dad was in the NAvy at the same time. He worked in the engine room of the USS Detroit, AOE-4. Is that the ship you were on? I noticed you were on an amunition ship.

1 & 2: E-4 Army National Guard, E-6 Enlisted US Navy, O-3 Officer US Navy.
3. 25 years
4. M16A1 with M203. If you didn't keep it wet with oil it would jam. M203 was fun, but not worth the extra bulk/weight. Full size stock obviously a close quarters disadvantage.

1911 - best handgun ever. A little tricky to reassemble.

M2 .50 Cal - Oh yeah! Rock and roll baby! Best gun ever, that's why it is still here. Like AT&T says, "Reach out and touch someone!"

M60 .30 Cal - OK. Would have liked a .30 Cal version of the M16/M4 better, though.

Mossberg 500 - just your typical shotgun. Nothing special there.

M4A1 - improvement of the M16. Still needed to keep it well oiled. Would much prefer a .30 caliber standard, though.

M9 - not as good as the 1911. It's a plinker, in my opinion. Accurate enough, though. Too heavy.

M-16, loved it, had a AR15 before I entered. Loved the M60 an shooting up
the zero out of the big number 10 sign in shooting lane 10 an starting a fire downrange,
with the tracers,,,Sgt. wasn't happy. Loved the M203 grenade laucher on the my
M-16, got to shoot it alot one day, but they don't do as much damage as the
Chuck Norris movies. Really Loved the .50..seems those tracers just go an go an go
Qalified with the Dragon, Expert with no misses an led my Co. to win the Battlion shoot-out with a live round hit at 1000 meters on a duece...that was really fun an made my
Capt. Jesus Christ Dominuqe Rodriquez very happy...yes that name is right. No war time experience, that was for my Dad an brother an uncles...I salute all of them an all of you guys...Thanks.

3. 24yrs Korea thru Vietnam; wounded at hill 229 and again on Boulder City
(both are/were located in western Korea). Medevaced to hosp
ship and then Sasebo Japan for recuperation.
Vietnam based near Freedom Hill and outposted to various camps
where assaults by sappers and snipers were not uncommon.

4. M1 Garand, M1A1 Carbine(a piece of junk), M14 (possibly the best of all), M1911 .45 auto (difficult to shoot well, but very effective at close range).
In Korea I carried (on special occasions) a personal weapon, i.e. an original Colt SAA .45LC

US Marines, heavy machinegunner in the infantry.

My rank and experiences aren't topics that I really discuss outside of other military folks. Nothing super-secret, I just reserve those conversations for the fraternity of men who can appreciate them. Anyway.

M16A2. Decent rifle. It'll work for you if you make it work.
SAW. Never grew to like it. Personal preference, really.
M60E3 & some time on the old Delta model. I hated the Echo 3. Nearly every one we had in our armories were fragile and needed to be babied to stay up. The old Delta models actually worked.
M2 50 cal. Big, heavy, but never let us down. My favorite machinegun.
Mark 19. Not as big, really heavy, and needed lots of support to keep fed. Very versatile weapon, very effective.
M9 pistol. Too big as a 9mm. Long, heavy trigger. It'll work for you, though.

Fam fires on a Remington 12 gauge we had in the armory in Cuba. Played around with other stuff here and there, but nothing enough to say my opinion matters much.

It's not the tool that matters, its the man holding it who makes the difference. I'm not sure what judgments you'll be able to form based off a military man's experiences. I have a lot more time behind the trigger as a civilian now, and I get to choose what I want to shoot.

M16/XM177/M4 - Never cared for it, never will, but can still hit targets out to 600m ie SDM
M148/M203/M79 - gotta love the blooper
M60 - 23 lbs of love
M249 - M60 wantabe just the wrong caliber
M2 - My favorite crew weapon - really reach out and touch someone
MK19 - spent more time repairing then shooting darn 40mm garbage
ADM-65 great little close in, really ticed off some officers by carrying it
M240 - Ok but not a M60
M9 - Ok but not a 45 or even a 10mm
Win Model 12 trench/ rem 870- need I say anything? its a 12 guage.

Most of the M16 family - take care of it, it'll get the job done
M1911A1 - loved it
M3A1 - way to much fun
M9 - does what it's supposed to do, will take a M1911A1 any day
M60 - humpin' a pig was worth it when you needed to fill the air
M2 - loved it,
M240 - second to the pig
M249 - easy to shoot, but, prefer the pig or a M240
The occassional POW; S&W 39, Walther PP, Walther PPK/S - it was easier to be forgiven than get permission and worth it.
Pershing 1A - not really "issued", but, I was signed for three of them

M1911 - loved them. My favorite was s/n SM11131, a Service Match .22 that had been rebuilt into a .45 at some point. Nice trigger, totally reliable and shot right on the sights. Got my first LEG points with that gun.
M-16 (various, sometimes with an M-203) I liked the gun. Got an AR-15 now.
M-60 - Very cool gun. Has to be kept clean. Clean with brake cleaner.
M2 - Wonderful gun. Nothing at all delicate about it. Every part is super-heavy-duty!
Blooper - Only used in exercises. Accurate enough for a grenade launcher.
Win Model 12 - It's a shotgun.
S&W M-15 - USAF Officer issue. Some of them had 2" barrels and checkered top straps. Super nice guns. They were all destroyed in the mid-to-late 1970s. The ammo used a 150 gr FMJ bullet at about 500 fps. Better to throw the gun.
Colt Police Positive - Same. 2" and 4" barrels.

I had control over a whole lot of Titan and Minuteman ICBMs. As a Flight Commander, I "owned" 50 Minuteman missiles, but I can't say they were issued to me.
Combat Crews have the launch keys, but they get real pissed off if you try plinking with a nuke.
Got to fire a Minuteman at the Vandenberg test range. Very boring. The launch crew can't see a thing. Might as well be in the simulator.

C-grunt, you admitted you're 3rd ID, now you have to sing The Dogface Soldier Song.

I Wouldn't Give A Bean

I'd rather Be A Dogface Soldier Like I Am.
I Wouldn't Trade My Old O.D.'s

On All The Posters That I Read It Says

So Feed Me Ammunition,
Keep Me In The Third Division,

Will have at least 4 years active duty after graduating college, with a couple more years of active, inactive, or reserves after that.
Only military issue firearm I've gotten my hands on is the M16, when we've gotten to do an FTX down at Ft. Hood. Not bad, much less recoil than I was expecting! Though I can't say I was too impressed with it, but not especially bad. Don't have enough time to actually make an opinion :p

M16A2, M9 were issued They both performed as expected.

I liked the M60 and MK19 the most.

SFC (RET) 20 years active duty Army.
Issued these weapons.
M16A1 rifle
M16A2 rifle
M3 "Grease gun" 45 caliber submachine gun.
M60 Machine gun.
M2 Machine gun.

Qualified as high as you can go on all but the M3 grease gun. Expert qualification but Expert is limited in the Army to most. There is additional small arms training. Advanced marksmanship to those who are not the "tooth" I was part of the tail.

Not issued these weapons but qalified with:
Qualified expert with the M1911A1 45 pistol although never issued one.
When I deployed I never wanted a pistol anyway. Nothing makes you feel as naked and vulnerable as pistol.

Qualified on gunnery:
M1 Abrahms tank. One very big and accurate single shot.:) It takes four people. A Tank commander, gunner, loader and a driver.

3. 87-90; 90-98; 06-Present
4. M-16A2/3; M-60; M203. Unit armorer so qualified and maintained all infantry TO weapons (still had grease guns and .45s in my arms room), mechanized Infantry. Special unit, qualified and maintained all Soviet infantry TO weapons. Expert rifle, pistol, auto-rifle. Recently spent 2.5 years (2 tours in Iraq; wounded on first tour) with Marine Infantry BN, and got to handle current TO weapons.

Favorite current issue weapons? Shotgun and some of the sniper platforms. Saw a lot of broken M4s, 9mm is worthless outside the wire IMO, M32 is pretty sweet (6 shot 40mm grenade launcher). Mod2 still works just fine. 240s are an improvement over the 60.

Traded off my M-15 Middy after my first combat tour. Traded off my semi pistols after my second tour ... except for one 1911. Love revolvers!
