Learn To De-escalate

Useful in every part of your life. Sometimes all it takes is active listening (repeating the words coming out of the agitated persons mouth). Does two things, first is let them know you understand what they are having a problem with and two let’s them hear the words from somewhere besides their head. Second, sometimes the words don’t seem as reasonable when someone else says them.

Long-long ago in the past walking shore patrol was a practical experience in the art and application of de-escalation.

We just had de-escalation training at my college again this week. I've probably taken it 5 times in the last 10 years. But I don't mind the refresher. When dealing with the public/students with repetitious issues it is awfully easy to slip into sounding bored or disingenuous instead of treating each encounter as unique. You would be surprised how heated people coming into a library can get. Sometimes I think part of it is they feel like its a venue where they can blow off steam with minimal repercussions. I work hard to not take things personally and be genuinely empathetic. Its not like it costs me anything to be nice.

After decades of marriage, I have found it most useful with people I love. :)
