Least Expensive .357 snub nose?

Like the title suggests, I'm looking for the least expensive RELIABLE .357 snub nose revolver, preferably spurless or DAO.

I really like the Ruger SP101, but I'm not gonna drop $550 on revolver that would only get carried when I jog.

Any suggestions?
 
Is that the used price? The website says $650.

Or I see the ultralites, but in .38 special, for like $500 ish. Still more than I'm comfortable jogging with.
 
I got my Ruger SP101 for $450 NIB. If you shop around a bit, you may be able to find one that's priced lower than $550.
 
Hank- Use the MSRP as a guide, not the actual in-store price of the gun. I was just writing in another thread that I overpayed for my SP101 and I paid $460+tax.
Shop around. If you want a better idea of how much you should expect to pay for a gun, go to auctionarms.com or gunbroker.com, and see the prices there, then add on anywhere from $20-$75ish (just guessing) depending on the item in question, and where you live.
if a gunshop actually asks you to pay the full MSRP they are probably ripping you off.
 
Buy a used SP101 if that is what you like. However, it is little too heavy for jogging, unless you plan on carrying it in a man purse or something. You should also be able to find a used S&W 637, or the shrouded equivalent, in the $275-$325 range as well. You will barely feel that revolver when you are carrying it.

taurus never sells new for the MSRP, my pt92ar was bought for 325 I think, MSRP is 642. so pretty much cut the MSRPs in half and add tax and expect that as your high price then haggle.

If your going to use a revolver for jogging check out the 38sp snub's cheaper and lighter. I think that might be what your looking for.

Last summer I purchased a very lightly used Ruger SP101 3" for $350 out the door. It is in perfect condition. I think the original owner probably just fired a cylinder or two of magnums before taking it to the pawn shop. I'm currently overseas but when I get home I'm taking it out to the range again.
 
The cheapest .357 snub thats worth a darn is probably going to be a Taurus.

I have a 3" stainless Taurus 605 and have had horrible luck with it. You wont get a Taurus recommendation out of me but others will chime in how their guns is great and they have never had any problems. Its an option.


Another is grabbing a Smith and Wesson Airweight .38spl snubbie. You can get a 637 or 638 for $335. They will have better resale and be quite a bit lighter then the Taurus....but they are a bit pricier as well.

ladies grip

This thread caught my interest since I have been asked by a Single mom that lives across the street for SD/HD suggestions. She had a Glock and became fairly proficient shooting it, but was alway anxious in its handling and didn't like the cleaning procedures. She sold it and wants a revolver as a replacement. I like and would recommend the Lady S&W in .357 but I'm not crazy about the grip. Call me crazy, but I would worry that the gun could be pulled out of a womans hands.. I thought there was a snubbie .357 that had a grip where the bottom widened out more Cowboy fashion than the Bird's head style so common on the pictures above. Any suggestions?

Rossi makes a .357 mag snub that's pretty inexpensive in real world prices. They make both blue and stainless.

I would worry that the gun could be pulled out of a womans hands.

If the BG gets close enough to grab the gun you should have already put a round or two into 'em.
 
A J frame snubby is less than worthless in .357 to me. I'd rather have it in .38 special. To me, .357 begins with 3" barrels and at least a SP101 size gun. I have a Taurus 3" M66 carried IWB that works great! I'd rather carry my 9mm if I have to carry a snubby .357 like for pocket carry or something.

In new guns ROSSI and TAURUS are the value leaders. Both are good guns for a lot less than the snob brands.;) I've got three Tauri now and have owned 7 Rossis, though only one was in .357. They've all been excellent, perhaps not the most refined in fit and finish or in out of the box trigger (though a couple of the Taurus triggers are fantastic). They all are worthy of trusting a life to, though, and didn't break the bank.

Found my 3" M66 Taurus for $180 at a gun show not long ago, used of course.

Wow! Thankyou all !!! I don't spend a lot of time in online gunstores, and all the brick-and-mortar stores around here are outrageously priced (When Bass Pro beats their prices by $100-$400 just by selling at MSRP, it's bad.)

MCgunner, why is that? Does the short barrel lessen the velocity of the .357 round to the point where a .38 is better? I knew that the .357 would lose quite a bit of punch, but I still thought it would be better than a .38 SPL.

BTW, I'm not worried so much about using it against humans as I am wild dogs, but humans are a consideration as well. Are there any other options out there that would be better suited to my needs?

The .357 is all flash/bang out of a 2" gun, hard to control, kicks like a mule, and for all that my subcompact 9mm beats it ballistically. The .38+P ain't quite up to the .357 in a 2", but it comes typically within 100 ft lbs and is a LOT easier to shoot. Two center mass is worth more than one in the chest and one in the ceiling in my estimation.

Out of a 3" gun, I'm getting over 500 ft lbs with a hot load vs under 400 for 2" ballistics I've seen. an extra silly inch gives you significant increase and in addition the extra sight radius makes it easier to shoot well at longer ranges, say 20 yards out where that wild dog is barin' his teeth at you. Also, if it matters (does to me), at least in a K frame, the 3" barrel length allows the gun to have a full length ejector rod which can make reloads a much faster experience.

In a new gun, the 3" SP101 is very hard to beat for what you are lookin' to do with it.
 
I like .357 snubby better myself, I carry a S&W Model 60 in one. However, with the strong 38sp +P (high pressure) loads out today, some of which are designed for the short barrel, the 38 is a very formidable weapon.
 
I'm with Steve C and MCGunner. .357s out of one of the lightweight guns is not a pleasant experience. The smallest I am willing to go, and even then only with light magnum loads, is the SP101.

If you go the small gun route, be aware that they are more difficult to shoot well, and frequent practice is vital for good shooting.
