Leaving a gun in the car

I was going to say every 10 years.

How about you fill the rest of the box with range ammo, and every 6 months you shoot some of it to see what happens?
Close to what I was thinking. I don't think temp will mess with your ammo at all. Humidity - sure, but unless your van is also a convertible that you park outside and always leave open, I don't think you have much to worry about.

Every six months? Lol. I guess... Why not? But it sure isn't necessary.

On the topic of leaving a gun in the car all the time... I really don't see the purpose. "Just in case" of what? In case your van is burglarized while you're not in it, and it needs a means to defend itself?

Now, having a place in the van to secure (and I do mean secure) a firearm when visiting places you can't carry? That's different, and a legitimate matter to concern oneself with, IMO.

Sorry to pile on with opinions you specifically said you didn't want. This is the Internet, after all; and, I think, an important issue.

I keep mine in a Sentry safe that's under the rear folding back seat with a extra lock bolted on with round headed bolts. It has for bolts inside that go through the floor board and then I had the muffler shop take a welder to the bolts underneath. I put a thermometer in there first and even though the temp in the cabin was 130 degrees it was 75 under the seat. Sprayed some undercoating on and lined it with foam from a gun case and good to go.

Here's where I am going to catch some flack. If I own a business that's a franchise and it cost me 1.5 million dollars to start the business, a 50K franchise fee and 5% of my sales to the corporation BUT I have to sign a franchise agreement that says I cant even buy ONE napkin from anybody else even if I run out and I have to post no gun signage am I anti-gun or anti-2nd amendment?

Basically am I willing to throw away the $300,000 per store I make a year by breaking the franchise agreement? I mean corporate will void my franchise agreement in a second if I use different toilet paper that I can buy for a third of the cost at Costco. Say I own 5 franchises, they would void the whole deal, I would be out of 1.5 million a year, all of my start up costs and have no income. It would rather easy to check that I have the proper signage and corporate is sneaky enough to send somebody in who would make it obvious that they were carrying. If I didn't school my managers properly I could lose my livelihood.
Sometimes things are not always black and white. BTW I'm not talking about McDonalds, they leave it to the individual franchise holders so if you see signage that is either a corporate store or the franchise holder IS anti-gun.
Just something to consider.

A few things to consider. I've only had it happen once, but somehow some moisture ended up on the one side of my vehicle-pistol and showed some slight surface rusting.

I currently reside in GA and the humidity can be a killer. I would swap out some desiccant packs periodically and wipe your firearm down with a marine-cloth.

I would also avoid a safe with any form of bio-metrics or keyless entry requiring batteries. Batteries (alkaline) can and will leak, ruining your safe and even with lithium or rechargeable batteries, they're life span is greatly reduced in extreme heat.

I do several things:

1. Wherever possible, I don't patronize places that don't allow concealed carry.
2. I inform the company WHY I don't patronize them (and get friends to do the same.)
3. I point out that the store (or whatever) is there to ATTRACT customers, and if they will not allow customers the means of self-defense, they must have security on site to protect those unarmed customers.
4. I keep my gun on my hip, but concealed.
I teach at a high school. To follow your advice I will either need to change careers or commit a felony every day. I bought one of those metal gun boxes with the cable and a mechanical combination lock. $20 on sale at Bass Pro. It's secured to the trunk hinge frame. That's where I keep my gun.

The world is not as black and white as you would like to make it.

That's what I was thinking. I'd be much more worried about dead batteries than dead ammo.

The only time it's locked up is when I can't carry. If it's in the lock box, it's only for a brief period. Plus my carry guns are all black SS. Basically I get it out of the box the second I get to the truck. One of the main reasons is if a thief wants your vehicle and is good, he'll get it. Finding a gun at a chop shop is an added bonus. No electronics on my safe just a big padlock.

I didn't realize that there was a corporate discussion going on under Papa Johns right now. I saw Papa Johns and thought meh, maybe I'll read it later.

Well now that warmer temps are coming I expect to hit the range at least once a week and get plenty of range time with all of my pistols and will rotate the ammo in my carry mags every few months. I plan on replacing the batteries in the safe every 6 months but it has a key lock as well so it won't be terrible if I forget. The safe will fit both my Glock 17 & 17L at the same time so when I have to go somewhere I can't carry they will both be locked up in a locked vehicle and covered with a blanket or jacket.
I think for me and what I do this will work for me and I understand some don't agree with it, and I respect that. I work at home and don't live in the city or where there is a problem with crime yet, and I mostly only go out to take my daughter to school, grocery shopping, and my doctors, so none of those are very likely to cause me any problems. Of course there is always the chance, but that is why we pay attention and plan for the worst but hope for the best.

Thanks again for all the opinions and insight from all. It is much appreciated.

I own my own company and do service work in peoples homes I never carry in a persons home, I do keep my pistol in my trk but I do put it on when I get in the trk and take it in the house at night or leave it in my brief case and take it in at night, I do have a single shot 20ga with an 18" barrel that folds up in the back seats and it stays there it has 2 buck and wax shot loads for it

Isn't it sad that some people have to worry about the change in their car being stolen. I am glad I don't have that issue where I live but I have plenty of friends that live a few miles away and have to lock up everything they own at all times. I have never had anything stolen from my car at home or at the farm. I did have the battery stolen out of my truck(1977) at our hunting camp a while back. They didn't steal the $800 winch or break in the cabin where we had deer stands and such. All they needed was a three year old Walmart battery. They even took the time to disconnect it and not cut the cables.

And for every guy know who had a gun stolen from a safe, I'll introduce you to a hundred who had a gun stolen from a car.

...and for every one you know who had one stolen from a car, I'll show you 10,000 who had one in their car and it wasn't stolen. So, who wins?

You're on according to the DOJ there are three times the number of guns stolen during burglaries than all other property crime combined.

I don't leave a gun in my car because I don't need to, for whatever reason. However, this is a diverse country and there are a lot of people with limited choices. It's up to each individual to weigh his/her options and to not be judged by members of their gun community who have a totally different lifestyle. Park your judgement on the home page of this forum because your life differs from every other life on here. One size does not fit all.

Do as you will, but my personal view is that I will not leave a loaded firearm unattended. Locked, unlocked, covered with a blanket, wrapped in gun-shaped jammies... no. When I load a gun, it stays in my immediate and direct control until I unload it.

I do. A stolen gun is a stolen gun.

I win again. Just because guns are stolen from homes doesn't mean we have to make it even easier to steal them.

gee, if no one had guns then none would get stolen.
Your perfect utopia, huh?

My take on the ethical issue: if you can carry on-body, that's the way to go, both because the gun is less likely to be stolen, and because you're more likely to have it if needed. With the gun in the glove box, what happens when a robbery happens while you're inside the gas station buying coffee, or while changing your tire?

OTOH, if you're going somewhere where you can't carry on body - like a job perhaps - then having it in the car may be the best you can do. I'd park inside at home, or bring the gun inside, etc, but I don't think you have to go unarmed just because, e.g., your employer doesn't like guns.

We had a local police chief have a gun stolen from his car off duty. He's parked on the street downtown and just didn't want to bother with the gun while he went into a department store. He could have; the store wasn't posted, and he was a police officer to boot, he just didn't want to. Don't be that guy.

You all should be happy - I am in Calif and your chances of winning lotto than getting a permit .

I have to leave my carry gun in the car while at work-I lock it in the glove box. My employer, however, doesn't mind me bringing in a magazine, so I remove it before locking it in the glove box. If someone does break in and steal the gun, they will need to buy a magazine to make it work.
