both the lee and lyman manuals have good articles about casting. if you do not have one or both, see if you can borrow them from shooting buddies. if you are still having trouble, check your local library.
 
What is the BHN of a 22LR bullet?

As for leading?
.22 RF bullets are soft swaged lead, and run 1,200 - 1,300 FPS normally with absolutely no leading at all.
My internet search lists 22LR as having 3% antimony content. The big difference i see between 22LR and cast bullets is the bearing surface of the 22 is 100% coated with lube. Cast bullet grease groove covers only about 1/3 to 1/4 of the bearing surface. With Lee TL style bullets being the exception. Could the design of the 22 make the difference. The cast bullet has to condition the barrel first by running unlubed bearing surface ahead of the grease groove? If the bullet is tumble lubed with alox, seating of the bullet into the brass case might remove some of it. Is it possible to test a tiny 22 bullet for hardness? If so, what is the BHN?:confused:
 
Educated guess is about 6-7 BHN. .22 bullets are considered for alloying purposes to be pure lead plus trace.

My experiences indicate leading isn't usually caused by one single bullet but by several. The experts on www.lasc.us have the same conclusions.
