I've been looking at purchasing a new lightweight scope for a .30-30 and am trying to decide between the Leupold VX-1 1-4x20 shotgun model with the heavy duplex reticle and the Weaver 1-3x20 with standard duplex. I won't be attempting shots past 200 yards with this gun. I've considered the VX-2 but it's just a little more than I want to spend on a scope for this particular rifle. So my question is which of these will serve me better for deer hunting?

If they're both in your price range, I'd tend toward the Leopold, but they're both pretty decent scopes, and that magnification range is a good choice for what you're wanting to do.

I've heard good things about the Weaver, but no personal experience. I have the 1-4X20 Leupold on an AR and would buy another in a heartbeat. Darn good scope.

In 2011 Leupold upgraded the entire VX line of scopes. If you buy a VX-1 made after January 2011 you are basically getting a pre 2011 VX-2. A Current VX-2 is essentially an older VX-3 at the old prices. The VX-3's were also impoved and the older technology was used to upgrade the lower end scopes.

If you choose to buy a current production VX-1 you will essentially be buying a 2 year old VX-2. Probably the most scope $200 will buy you.

I like the newest Weavers I've seen, but I haven't used that one.
Used a 1-4x20 Leupold for years. Like the heavy duplex. Very fast, light, scope for use in good daylight.
For hunting, I found the better way to go is with a Leupold 2-7X35 shotgun scope, or something like that. Less then 2 ounces heavier, and works a lot better when it's kind of dark out.
