Loading Large Rifle Cartridges

Saying "the Lee press", turret or otherwise, leaves some big questions, they do make several of each type. What you have is the smallest turret press they ever made. If you ever want to up-grade go for the Classic Turret (Flashhole's photo) and all will be well.

The press we have is not the classic you are correct. It is just the four hole turret press. I was not aware it is smaller, or the smallest press you can get. From looking at the various websites, it has 3 1/2 inches of ram throw. The same as the classic press. Sounds like the classic press shown by someone earlier in a photo in this thread must be made a little differently because there is no way we can use the auto indexing feature on ours reloading 45-70 it just isn't possible, the round gets wedged in our press every time we go to seat the bullet in the loaded brass.

Someone else said they have the rockchucker press here, which is what we are thinking about getting for 2 reasons.

1. To be completely honest neither me nor my dad are really too impressed with the quality of some of the Lee products we have gotten thus far. Sort of learning the hard way you get what you pay for.

2. The RCBS Rockchucker press says it has 4 inches of throw, which we think will make reloading the larger cartridges we are reloading a little easier. But I am taking the advice of another poster here in this thread seriously when he says even with his extra 1/2 inch he barely has room in his press also, in reloading some of the larger cartridges.

Soooooo it brings my father and I back full circle, and we just need to decide if what we have now is good enuf, or should we buy another press to compliment the Lee 4 hole turret we already have. Now after using it some more, it is doing the job. But would we like the RCBS line of products better? That is the question. Over and over and over again people we know keep telling us they prefer the RCBS stuff over Lee.

Ahhh... the pains of learning. We squashed a few cartridges, and have pounded the heck out of that plastic hammer for removing bullets. We got a 45-70 wedged in the seating die. I've wrestled with that "safe" Lee powder scale and lost. We've found that loading equipment is like Barbie Dolls... you have to buy an endless amount of stuff to go with it. The UPS trucks are lined up in the driveway every day and the credit card company is calling. But we've actually made a few bullets and I'm confident they will go bang. We're not saving any money yet... we may break even in a decade or two. But we're enjoying it. Having you folks to prop us up is invaluable.

Don't know what press is best, have only tried this one. But eventually we'll probably be able to justify a better one, and then another, and some day our bench will look like yours with presses sticking up all over the place (yeah, I've seen your bench pics). And then maybe we'll be helping new folks here... if we don't blow our heads off with the bullets we made first. :D

Thanks for the help... I'm sure we'll be asking for more.

AW, welcome - we've all done that & more in our reloading careers. In my 40 years at it I have learned most of my lessons the hard way, but by hanging out on here a bit, you might avoid the :cuss:, :banghead: and :fire:
;)
Cheers,
George J.

I reload the 45-70 and .300 mag on my RCBS Rock Chucker with zero problems. I am happy with my single stage type of existence and do not ever want to go to progressive at this point. I do have an old Spar-T turrent and load my pistol on it some but I always do things in batches anyway. Separate propellant amounts but the same bullet usually and a turrent does not speed things up any for me by any great amount. Yes I had a Lee Challenger press and it worked OK but I kept breaking the aluminum linkage with the belted magnums ( 500 NE for one), and military brass so I got a stronger press (used).

There are no such limitations on the Lee press either. According to Lee you can actually reload a 50 BMG on their Classic Turret Press.

This is on the Lee site:
Lee Classic Turret Press

The long stroke allows rifle cases over three inches long to be loaded using the automatic index. Deactivate the Auto-Index and cases as long as the monster 50 BMG can be loaded.

ArchAngel... reread the section you made bold... it doesn't actually say it will reload 50BMG (large dies are required and the turret can't hold them).

I reload .458 Lott cartridges using my RCBS Rockchucker press with no problems -- also using my Lee hand press (neck sizing the brass).

It's not the brand of the press it is what the press is designed for. The thread has turned into a my RCBS is bigger than your LEE. It's just like Ford vs Chevy except one is a lot more reasonably priced and does the same job in my opinion.

The Lee Turret press has been doing just fine. My son is able to load 300 Weatherby Mags by inserting the shell top with bullet to be seated up into the seating die first and then into the shell holder. Of course this slows things a little but he prefers loading single stage anyway. The Classic Lee Turret looks like a substantial upgrade with more height and able to catch spent primers. But it all works quite well and though a RCBS might be superior, it's a cost savings compromise (which after all is why many people load in the first place).

Lee claims that the LCT can load cases as long as the 50 BMG, but is no such cartridge that uses the standard 7/8-14 dies that the LCT is limited to using. Lee should be ashamed of such sleazy advertising.

The LCC has a screw-in bushing that when removed allows you to use Lee's larger diameter 50 BMG dies. IMHO, the LCC is a better press than the RC, at a better price.

I have both the Lee Turret and Classic Turret. The Classic turret is mounted to my bench and the turret is on a hitch mount that goes with me to the range.

My dies in the turret goes from one press to the other.

For pistol cartridges I might actually prefer the Turret over the Classic Turret due to the shorter throw, if it only didn't make a mess with the primers.

I don't use the semi-progessive feature - I have a Lee Loadmaster for that.

The Classic Turret is one I'll never outgrow.

reloading long rifle casings

The Dillon 650 xl progressive machine will easily process 30-06 and then some .Their case loader will load these nicely on the movable shell plate .

A question on the Lee Turret Press. Lee has a powder charging die for the Auto Disk powder measure, but it only goes up to a 30 caliber. Is there any die available for rifle calibers larger than 30? I've seen other brands but it has to support the Auto-Disk.
