Logger describes shoot-out in woods SCARY

His initial story should have raised lots of flags. Guns don't knock people down, but he reports that it happened almost every time he shot one of them.

"Van Meter said he shot and hit him in the right side, knocking him down immediately."

"Van Meter shot again and hit him in the back and knocked him down."

"Van Meter said he jumped on a pile of logs and shot at the assailant waist-deep in the beaver pond. The man went down..."

I'm guessing he accidentally shot himself and didn't want to admit it. Shot himself some more and came up with the story to cover it up.

You'd think after he went to that trouble he'd try to keep his story consistent...

Or he could just be insane.

VanMeter Case Closed
June 29, 2006

The investigation into the alleged shoot-out in Lincoln County is closed and now the supposed victim faces criminal charges.

Authorities are calling this a bizarre and concocted story. You may remember the name Homer Van Meter. He says back in April he was logging in Lincoln County when two men started shooting at him. Now, authorities say he basically lied, his wounds were self-inflicted and he might face criminal charges here in Wisconsin and in California.

Homer Van Meter says the shooting happened in secluded woods in Lincoln County in April. He says two men drove up in a Black SUV and just opened fire. He then told authorities he did not know the two men. However, officials say about a week later VanMeter changed his story saying he did know the suspects from a shoot-out he had with them two years ago. This time in Sonoma County, California. Then authorities say in late May he changed his story again. VanMeter then told police he knew where the two suspects who shot him were and that they had actually died from their wounds after the April shootout in Lincoln County. The Lincoln County Sheriff says based on their information Van Meter is not credible. He says there is no evidence to support Van Meter's claims. Lincoln County Sheriff Tom Koth says, "There was not any corroborating evidence. We searched that area for days, with dogs and from the air. We were not able to come up with any evidence to verify his version of what took place." VanMeter now faces criminal charges in California of "making a false report" and two charges of "obstructing an officer" for his initial false report of not knowing the suspects and for refusing to provide information on their location after the alleged shootout here in April.

Sheriff Koth says the Lincoln County District Attorney will make the final decision on if Van Meter will be charged. Koth says he hopes Van Meter will have to pay restitution, that's 10s of thousands of dollars, to Oneida and Lincoln County for manpower and resources.

So closeth the case . . . so endeth the thread.

Closed for reasons that this became non-S&T now that its evident it was a fabrication.
