Long barrel revolver

Spectacular gun. I have often wondered how strong the 607 truly is, and if it would hold up with loads approaching ‘max range. I won’t try it, but I suspect it would. If it holds the .360 then it should hold an insane magnum. Not that I advocate doing it, I’m just glad to see that’s others have leaned on a Taurus.
I also have an M608; built from a parts kit and the left over pieces from the M607 build. Although I don't use them often, it is easily capable of handling original pressure Magnum loads (i.e. Buffalo Bore and Double Tap). Both revolvers have ball detent crane locks installed to insure solid lockup. FYI, the large frame Taurus cylinder is not only longer than the N-frame S&W, it is larger in diameter.

I love long barrelled revolvers. I have a Super Blackhawk and Redhawk 7.5" .44 magnum and I'm considering snagging a 9.5" Super Redhawk.

Have a 8-3/8 model 29 and a SS Super Blackhawk with a 10 inch barrel. I can often hold all shots on a NRA smallbore target with the Ruger at 100 Yds using iron sights. Does take some constant practice to keep me dialed in though.

I gave this one to Dad in about 1990...

Sadly, it has come back to me, so I left it the way he outfitted it...

S&W 686-3, 8-3/8", Factory scalloped for Millet rings, Lighted Reticle 2.5x T/C scope:

Definitely a keeper for life.

I recently purchased a 686-3 like yours. Luckily it has the original Millet rings. The rings are nearly impossible to replace because they were made only for those revolvers. I have yet to replace the mediocre scope that came with it.

Are you guys trying to make up for some other inadequacy?

Just kidding. I was just looking on GB a couple of days ago to see if a long barreled Ruger Single Six in 32 mag might be listed. Didn't see any. Did see a couple of 22 versions with long barrels. My longest are a couple of 6" guns, A GP-100 and an old model 10 we call Grandpaw. Plus whatever is on my Remington 1858 copy.

Not sure, howeve, is there a maximum length allowed for barrels on a handgun?
No there is not. See my post above somewhere for my 18" barrel revolver. There is a point where the gun gets unwieldy without a way to shoulder or brace it on something. My long revolver pushes up against this barrier and the gun is hard to hold on target for extended periods of time, but I'll be darned if it isn't terrible fun!

Model 48 8 3/8" .22 Magnum rim fire . A super sweet one , hyper accurate with my Leupold 4x ler scope. I can cleanly take ground squirrel s to 150 yards , coyotes to half that. I don't fool with .22 jet anymore

Sweet indeed. Very nice setup.
Truth be told , for the last 4 or five years it has replaced my S&W Model 53 .22 Jet that I had this scope and mount on. That mount allows the irons to be used and hold the two removed side plate screw so they don't get lost !
Less hassle and the 6" Jet got about 2000+- FPS with 45 grain Hornet bullets and this gun get 1900 FPS with 30 grain Ammo that costs about $10 a box of 50 when I get good deals. I also have a Ruger 7.5" Ruger Single six .17 HMR hunter with a 2x scope in the factory rings that rides in the pick up .:) I changed the 4x scope onto the Model 48 from the Ruger .17 and put the 2x scope from the Model 53 Jet on the Ruger single six .17HMR as it is my truck pistol for non SD.
