guys i am raising the funds for a 1858 remington 44c but need your thoughts on 8in barrel versus 5 1/2in barrel which one and why etc?

What’s the purpose for the revolver? If hunting or target accuracy is needed I would go long. For all other purposes I would probably stay short. The long does look nice though…

The longer barrel gives more oomph, is period correct, and provides better accuracy. The shorter barrel looks neat and it handier in certain circumstances. For what you describe, either one would be fine - you should also look into how shot loads can by loaded in a revolver - I've never done it.

I have one of each; Piettas. Both shoot really well. If I could only have one I would go the 8” because 8” is as issued and historically correct (as Hawg said) and a fine piece. The 5.5” is very accurate, well balanced and eminently packable. Good for 100 yard shots. For the historically indifferent the 5.5 may be more ‘practicle’.

My boys each have the 5.5 and love them - as I do my own. The 8” was my first choice and is, for me, still number one.

Get both or either - ya can’t go wrong.

well guys I sold one of my shotguns today and was able to raise enough money to get this one but don't get me wrong if i could of gotten a bit more i would of purchased the steel frame model but living only on $914 a month and having to sell a shotgun to get enough money i was still glad to be able to get this one ordered today! https://www.emf-company.com/store/pc/1858-Remington-Brass-Army-44-8-111p1176.htm

Dude, what are you even thinking? Bad choice. For another 37 bucks you can have a steel frame eight inch. Redo that order immediately.

Eyrie G. Dogg is correct get the steel frame for the extra $37!!
so, have either of you contacted him and offered to help him buy it?

Virtue signal much?
He asked for advice, StrawHat, not money. So, he got advice. I don’t think a clapping seal would be of much use to fren midland man just now. Do you?

You can’t always get what you want… some wise guy said that. I’m told the brass used today is not the same as what we saw in the early days of replica handguns. Go easy on the powder charges and enjoy your new pistol! Welcome to the fraternity.

that steel framed one looks great and emf was super to work with plus pricing right now is way better than the other stores offered even tho the shipping is a bit high at $41 they are still cheaper than dixie gun works and others i have looked at! plus emf has signature required when they ship the package with insurance etc!

midland man

Great choice and good to hear that EMF was willing to work with you with the upgrade!

As for the 5 1/2" barrel; while I do like the look of it I'm still enough of a NMA traditionalist to go with the 8" barrel!
