Alright, I've been out here since classes started and all my guns are back home. I would really like to head out to the range, but I'm not sure where there are any public ranges nearby. I need to find a place that is both public and offers gun rentals. I live out in the Uniondale/Hempstead area.

Long Island Shooting Center is a Store/Range....they MIGHT have rentals, not sure. They are in Islip so it would be a bit of a hike but, give them a shout http://www.lisc.net/.

You also are right near Coliseum Gun Traders...they have a large selection of handguns if you feel like stopping in to check out some gun porn. They might be able to point you in the right direction.

Hah, you're absolutely right about needing a gun out here in Hempstead. Walking back from class at night on a regular basis leads to some "interesting" encounters. Not to mention the stories I hear about students getting mugged on the way back from class :uhoh:

I also didn't know there was a gun store so near to campus, I'll definately check that out and the pizza place too. Thanks guys.

Coliseum has a nice selection, and knowledgeable guys. They own my credit card, at this point. :D

Ask for Kenny and say "hi" from 51 Cards. ;)

Sounds like you're going to Hofstra?

Oh, and as for renting guns? Well, you see --- here in the enlightened state, it is considered safer to buy one first, then figure out how to use it and become familiar with it. Rental??? Sure.

When I went to Post College there was an old underground wine cellar a little ways away from the main buildings which the Post family had converted to a pistol range. I shot a couple of times down there.

I wonder if any of you young Toasties know about that.

There's still a range called Mitchell Center. It's in the middle of all of the hugely developed stuff that used to be the airfield. The range is very, very nice. Also, ludicrously formal. When you check in they not only check licenses (not a requirement in NY, oddly enough), but they also match serial numbers to licenses. And no "swapping" stuff. And slow fire only.

I do not know anyone who shoots there.

Yeah I did notice that range driving around, it's pretty much right behind the Netherland dorms. If NY wasn't so freakin strict on guns, I would have just brought mine over. Oh well, 2 year grad program and I'm outa this town and back home. Still gotta make a few calls around but the gun range at Islip looks promising.

I love Long Island

Even though I left Stony Brook University some time ago, I still find myself hanging out in LI frequently. It is a big difference from NYC. Besides, they are always more gun-friendly out there. Well, maybe for the exception of the Stony Brook campus. When I was attending, I knew better than to ask the administration clerks if it's "okay to have my Auto Ordnance M1911A1 and three spare clips of Corbon .45 JHP ammo in my Jeep".:) I left these items in Port Jefferson, my second home next to NYC:D

Actually, yes --- they did misspell "Mitchell" in the link. :D

Like I said, no one I know goes there. There are some good private ranges around, cost about $100/year, "open day & night" for your locally-legislated CCW convenience. ;)

I wonder sometimes if it isn't actually better to shoot at a not-so-well-lit range, in terms of realism. The Mitchell place is very bright. Which is nice. In its way.

I like having my serials checked about as much as I like having Sports Authority ask for my ticket, just to buy ammo. (WWB .45 JHP $18/50, last time, BTW.)

If you have a car there are a few options, none too close. I think the closest range heading East would be the Islip Outddoor range. On the same road as (Freeman Ave, Islip) as the Long Island Shooting Center. It's a 50 yard range and has been busy lately since Huntington closed. Going further east you have the Brookhaven Outdoor Range (very nice, 200 yard rifle, sporting clays, skeet/trap and archery), a very nice range. Than there is Calverton, a nice informal range but a good drive (at least an hour) from you. The only range that I think will rent guns is the Long Island Shooting Center and think that is limited to .22 rifles and maybe a Camp Carbine if they still have them. BTW, I don't know about storage in the University but there is no problem bringing a rifle thru NYC (unloaded in the trunk). Remember you can always drive through if you a legal from where you start and legal at your destination but only in the unloaded and locked condition. There are no permits or purchasing restrictions for rifles and shotguns in Nassau County, only for handgun. I shoot at Islip Outdoor pretty much weekly (sat or sun), if you want to check it out send me a PM. Will be glad to show you around. Bill

Unfortunately I don't think NYC would take kindly to me bringing in all my assault rifles/high cap mags/bayonets. So no restrictions on rifles huh? I did bring my C&R license so maybe I'll be able to pick up a M44 or something.
