Mauser 98

This only one of my long rangers. A Colombian Mauser M98 in .308 Winchester that I built myself.

Howa 1500, 25-06, Boyds classic stock, Millett Buck Gold Target/Varmint 6-25x56mm AO, target turrets, 30mm tube, with sunshade, bipod, my first serious long range rifle.
Only had it out once so far, schedule is so nuts as to defy description. Quick sight in, here.

Maybe those 1000 yard target look awfully small, but to a tyro at long range, that wasn't real big eather.

And the results of fiddling with the scope, (had been moved during shipping, etc.), got 2/3rds of a great group. :) Can't wait to get it out again with my shiney new handloads....

Some of you guys have some Jack Cheese! Nice stuff. I'll try to get a pic of my .243 (Turk mauser / Fajen stock / 26" Rem takeoff bbl).

Don,
GREAT rifles ... what finish is that on the Krieger barrel?

Thanks.
:)

very nice 1858! they look so similar i thought you'd just cut/paste two into the picture until i noticed one action was blued in the 2nd pic. (and i see the mags are different sizes too)

26" is a long barrel!

what's an obermeyer chamber? sorta like the wylde equiv in 308?

you'll have to post some targets!

taliv, thanks ... I just finished breaking in the barrels last weekend (Krieger's recommendation so let's leave it at that) and am in the process of working up loads for them. We had 20mph crosswinds at the range today so I figured it wouldn't be worth trying to get any data. My next stop will be 200 yards to zero and then 600 yards and I'll definitely post photos if my groups are even close to yours ...

When I ordered the barrels I mentioned to the guys at Krieger that I wanted to shoot 168gr and 175gr HPBT bullets in the .308 Win so they said that they'd ream the chamber with an "Obermeyer" reamer. They reamed the .300 Win Mag for 210gr HPBT bullets using some proprietary reamer that they have.

AI offers 5 and 10 round mags for the .308 Win but only 5 round mags for the .300 WM (wish they offered 10).

I need a scope level like you have on your US Optics .... any recommendations?

:)

I was going to take the 10FP out Saturday to zero @ 200, but with the 25-30MPH crosswinds we had and the dust clouds, would have been a lot of work for nothing.

How much did those two guys set you back?

Not as much as an AE, AW or AWM from Accuracy International. The AE is $3,200, the AW is $4,900 and the AWM is $5,900 and those prices don't include optics, bipod, or extra magazines. I bought the Remington 700 rifles about 10 years ago. One was a VSSF (.308) and the other was a Police Model so that cut the cost quite a bit.

One day I'd love to have a AWM in .338 Lapua but there are a number of other items on the list so it'll have to wait.

:)

Added in Edit: I've visited the AI factory in England and they make a top quality product. These two rifles were built in the "style" of the AE/AW/AWM and while they should be as accurate (and possibly more accurate) they are certainly not as rugged as the AI systems. My main objective with these two is to shoot 0.5MOA out to 600 yards, and with practice, the right loads, and more practice, out to 1000 yards.

1858,

Thanks. I see we both love the 26" Krieger MTU contour. Jack did a great job on your rifles as well. I put the finish on my rifles myself, using Brownell's Teflon/Moly baked on finish. It's really not hard to do, and if you'd like, I'll post the details as to how to build the vertical oven ($30) that you need. Then, all you need is a camp stove and a can of the finish.

Don, why did you choose the MTU contour? I went with the MTU barrel because I was concerned about velocity for long range but I also wanted a stiff barrel that wouldn't deflect too much. It's easy to calculate the deflection of a barrel having the same cross-sectional area along the whole length but it's more involved with tapered contours since I is a function of position along the barrel and the centroid of the barrel isn't at the midway point. A 26" barrel with a 1" OD (in .308) deflects about 0.006" at rest so the MTU barrel is going to deflect less than that (probably half that amount). I do plan on calculating the deflection of an MTU barrel but if anyone has some actual numbers I'd be interested in seeing them. The other reason that I chose the MTU barrel is that the AI rifles have 26" plus barrels with an MTU contour so they must know something. The guys at Krieger do great work and I'll definitely be working with them again.

I'd really appreciate that ... I do have access to a large walk-in oven that was bought for powder coating projects but your $30 oven sounds intriguing. I'll look for the Teflon/Moly finish on Brownell's web site.

Thanks.

Hows about a long-range handgun shot? As far as i know this is the longest 1st-shot handgun shot ever made on a game spp.--

http://www.perry-systems.com/what_others_have_to_say.htm#Steve

Actually i was lucky enuf to have been the spotter when Ernie Bishop killed a prairie dog at 1590 yds. on the 9th shot with a custom XP-100 handgun.

I was also the spotter on Ray Prager's 1140-yd. prairie dog double (2 with 1 shot) with a custom TC Contender.

There are better calibers for long range app then the .308 cals.
Well now that depends entirely on the application. Apparently for general purpose sniping up to 800 yards or so in a battle environment, both the Army and USMC came to a different conclusion. For a handloader with lots of time shooting paper with a 20 lb rail gun, there are probably better rounds for sure. So you saying there are better ones is just as silly as someone saying the 308 is perfect, all depends on the circumstances.

If you're in the military, and they buy you 308 ammo, then apparently the Army and USMC made a good choice. Otherwise, there are a lot of better calibers for long range apps, if you go by the results of LR BR and LR tactical match results.

Smith and Corona 1903a3 its been sporterized very nicely. I haven't put a scope on it yet (working my way though college) but eventually it will get a scope and target stock.
