I'm wanting to buy a new .22 semi auto for hunting and plinking. I'm looking at the Ruger 10/22. I want to know if there are any better options for my buck.

If you want to keep the gun in stock condition it's hard to beat the Marlin 60. The 10/22 has no peers if you want to modify.

The 10/22 is still one of the best values in a rimfire rifle. Had one for years and it still runs. If you get tired of looking at it in its factory condition, there are all kinds of options and upgrades available. A good buy IMO.

Marlin 60.

Outstanding accuracy

Magazines are:
easier to load/unload
Oops... tubular

I have a tube fed marlin semiauto that was prety cheap, hasn't ever given me fits. However, I'll never get rid of my 10/22, or the ones that will inevitably be handed down to me someday. They're great guns, and you can customize it exactly the way you want it.

10-22 a1.jpg get the 10-22 and have some fun, this one started life as a plain ruger 10-22 made in 1972, it got a $600 face lift 6 or 7 years ago a true tack driver

Marlin 60 or 99. If you like to modify and upgrade stuff, stick with a 10/22, as there isnt much out there for the Marlin.

There's also the Marlin 795, Marlin Papoose (the original Ruger 10//22 takedown)

+1 for the Marlin 795, I love mine.....you could spend the money on a 10/22 with all the trimmings, but for accuracy and price out the door....the 795 is A++ in my book and in your situation especially, definitely recommended over the 10/22 by a lot...

There's also the Remington 597. They're all great rifles IMO. But I'm a dyed in the wool Marlin guy myself. I got that way as a young kid who got to learn to shoot on Dad's 60 back in about 1965. I've got one Marlin 60 with 150,000 rounds through it. I have another that shoots very, very accurate. I have a 795 that's fun as heck to shoot because you can buy a pocketful of mags and keep shooting for an hour before reloading. Or you can carry it around squirrel hunting all day without getting a back ache. It's light, it's accurate, it's durable, it's fun... what else is there? Oh yeah. It's dependable but not as much as my 60's.

Marlin 60 or 795. The 795 is just about the same gun just mag fed. If you can wait, wait for a 10/22. Even though the Marlin might be more accurate out of the box, the 10/22 is a much better gun in the long run.

Good luck finding a 10/22 for a decent price now. The $199 model is going for $350+ on gunbroker. I lucked onto 1 at walmart.

When people ask me about a 22 semi-auto rifle, I always say my #1 choice is the 10/22 and #1a is Marlin 60.

Like others have said, 10/22 is so versatile/upgradable, if you are going to buy your first 22 rifle, it's hard to pass on it.

Handle them before you buy anything... The 10/22 sits in your hand like a beached whale! That fat magazine = a fat rifle.

The CZ's have safeties that work azzbackwards from every one else with that style of safety...

Maybe those things won't bother you??

Marlin 39a's are highly prized and sought after. CZ American is a fine .22 also. I have 2 model 60s with high round counts. If I was going Ruger get the 77/22 Mk II with a v-bolt not the one with the screwed in barrel if you can find it. 10-22s take to much upgrading to make them shooters IMHO.

I don't see where you get that. I have a 60 with 150,000 rounds through it and the only problem it has ever had was when I bent the ejector wire while cleaning the action. If you take proper care of it then it will work as well as any semi-auto. That means no oil on the action at all IMO. It only accumulates crud. And don't bend anything when you clean it.

I would rather have a nice 50 year old Remington 550 than a new 60, 10/22, or 597....nice walnut, , steel with good blueing, and no plastic.

I agree you should handle them first, because everyone is different. I like the 10/22 and find the "fat" stock fits and feels better in my hand. ;)

Walnut looks great but I buy firearms based on how they shoot. And the only things plastic on a 60 are the follower on the inner tube mag, the trigger guard and the buffer. That's hardly a problem. It was improvement to change from a wood follower to a plastic one. The buffers were always plastic and the tg's have been plast a very long time. If you feel strongly about it buy an aluminum tg.
