Im looking for an inexpensive (<$500) rifle that will shoot cheap wolf hollow points as accurately or better than a 30-30 lever gun. It can be a bolt, semi-auto, or brake open action. Do any of you have any experience w/ any rifles like these?

SKS, problem solved. They'll eat just about anything. Semi-auto, dead-reliable 10-round magazine. You can get hi-capacity magazines for them (where legal) but they're mostly junk.

They can be had for less than $200, which leaves you with plenty of money for ammo or whatever else you can think of like synthetic stocks, red dot scope or whatever.

You'll get all kinds of opinions about which SKS is best, but I have a Yugo, and it's been good to me.

There are other choices as well such as the Saiga (these are AK-type but not technically AKs) and CZ has some bolt guns too. Some other, more knowledgeable posters will likely come in soon.

I have a Ruger 7.62x39 bolt gun that does all the things you want. An SKS would be a better choice from a cost perspective. A Saiga would be the best choice overall, but has a trigger that's not as nice as the SKS.

CZ-427 (I think that is the model number). Its a short 5 shot bolt gun with a 2 stage trigger that can become a *set* trigger by pushing the trigger forward. Extremely accurate and yet very light.

An SKS will fill the bill nicely.
I saw some Soviet bloc SKS's some time ago that were really quality rifles.
I had just made another purchase so I had to pass.
Plenty of other stuff around to suit your price range though.

I have considerd an SKS but will they hold <3 moa. From what little I know about them it seems their quality/accuracy varies wildly from one rifle to the next.

CZ-527 Carbine: great gun and very accurate but only 5 rounds if you care about that and will run you to the top of your price range.

SKS: Nice 10 round combat carbine rifle for $150 to $300.

New model Ruger Mini-30: nice accurate guns but well over $500.

Saiga 7.62x39: My first choice but maybe to close to an AK for you. These are top quality fairly accurate guns for about $300. Mags can be expensive and hard to find though.

My SKS will shoot under 3 MOA if I do it right. I don't do a lot of target shooting, so results vary, but last time I went plinking I was repeatedly hitting clay pigeons set up over 100 yards away.

I saw a Rossi today (break open) for $149.00 @ Gander Mountain. Then at least you will be able to change barrels should you tire of that round.

ditto on the saiga, and CDNN has saiga mags in stock for $19.99, i believe.

an SKS will never let you down.
It is not expensive, and a lot more accurate than people give it credit for.

The only problem I can think of, is that you will constantly find yourself short of ammunition after every trip to the range. Because the rifle will eat anything, and quickly.

Unless you buy a crappy one.
but you can buy a crappy cersion of any rifle.
Might as well spend less and have a 99% chance of coming out way on top.

Vz-52 carbine with the set-back barrel conversion. Really nice rifles, and surprisingly accurate.

Well, my friend's pre 64 94 Winchester will put 'em into under 2 moa with a receiver sight. I cannot brag that my SKS is THAT accurate. Even scoped, it's a 3 moa gun at best. That Winchester would probably be a 1 moa gun with a scope and a little tuning of handloads. However, the SKS, a Norinco I bought back about 1990, cost me all of 75 bucks and even dressed up with a scope mount and nice aftermarket stock and a few doo dads like 5 round box mag, ambidextrous safety, case deflector, etc, saw under what a new lever gun would cost. It's also quite a bit heavier and quite a bit less handy, but that's another story, I guess. For what it is, it's a good shootin' gun. It never jams, always goes bang, even killed a deer with it at 80 yards and made a really good shot with it.

Alternately, there's the Ruger Mini 30, not real accurate, either. Frankly, for the money, I'll take the SKS. There are bolt guns that are MUCH more accurate. The caliber, itself, isn't inaccuate, but guns like the AK are the source of inaccuracy. The SKS is generally a bit more accurate than the average AK. I've fired AKs that wouldn't shoot 6 moa. I wouldn't HAVE one, personally. I value accuracy too much for an AK, but the SKS is a fun range gun and has some utility even though 3 moa ain't that great. It's one of those guns that everyone should own if for just because they're cheap, reliable, and fun. Heck, I've got two of 'em, a norinco paratrooper carbine I dressed up sorta tacticool with a folding stock and 20 round fixed chicom magazine (did the star on the side:D) and some other tacticool stuff and the rifle set up as a sporter with a camo stock and scoped.

None of the suggestions hold a candle to the cz carbine. But if a single shot is enough (and why wouldn't it be?) the Rossi or Handi would probably give you the next best accuracy.

The CZ's are great but the magazines are single stacks. They would be ideal if they took AK mags! Somebody out there must be able to do a conversion along those lines.

The SKS's are a bit of mixed bag. The best one I've shot so far is actually a little Norinco Paratroop model. It will give me a solid 2" cluster at 75 yards. They are all quite reliable, just like the AK.

A CZ 527 Carbine conversion... good idea. But I'd rather they fix the magazine so you can load rounds top down like a regular bolt action rifle. It doesn't need anything else. You don't need a high magazine capacity if you hit the target. Capacity is an overrated trait.

The Remington 799 weighs a pound more than the cz carbine, costs at least 100 probably 200 more, and will not be as accurate. Go handle the cz before making any decisions.
