hello all. im looking to find a compact and fairly lightweight rifle scope. i would like something around 3x or 4x or adjustable. mostly imm looking for a good scopes for the money. nothing ungodly expensive but not a knockoff. i plan on mounting this on an ar15. plus points to mil dots or a t reticle. any ideas on brands would be great thx in advance

Leupolds tend to be light for their size. Dozens of choices. 2.5X, 3, 4, 1-4, 1.5-5, 1-6, 1.1-8, 1.75-6, 2-7, 2.5-8X. $200 to ungodly expensive.
Other than the Rifleman, the current Leupolds are, IMO, good scopes for the money.

Lightweight means Leupold. I would recommend the standard VX-2 in a 1.5-5X20 or 2-7X32. They are pretty light, around 8-10 oz. Leupold does offer an even lighter verson, but reports from those who own them indicate they are slightly less reliable. The standard VX-2's and VX-3's are as bulletproof as any scope made.

You can spend a lot more, and not end up with much more scope. You can spend a little less and end up with a lot less scope.

The new Leupold VX-2 is supposedly as good as the Vari-X III from just five or six years ago. For $300, the VX-2 2-7x32mm is a great scope.

Comparing specs in an old Leupold catalog to a 2012 catalog, it appears that the new VX-1 has better coatings than the Vari-X III did in 1999.

It seems like Leupold would update that page. It doesn't have the new VX1, VX2, VX3, or VXR lines.
As far as glass & coatings:

VX-3: Diamond Coat, Index Matched, Blackened edges, Xtended Twilight Coating

VX-R, VX-2: Diamond Coat, Index Matched, Blackened edges

Vari-X III, VX-III, Newer VX-II, VX-1: Fully multicoated

Older VX II, VX-I, Redfield Revolution: Multicoated

Vari-X II, Rifleman: Single Coated

I put a burris timberline 2-7x26 on mine. worked super great. I don't think they make it anymore, but you might find one if you look around. I think I paid $140 or so for it.
