hello

I am looking for a good 9mm. I want to use it mainly as a all round gun and just for fun on the range with some HD thrown in the mix to. Being up in canada my options are not as big as in the USA. I was looking at either a glock17, a Sig p226 or a browning hi power.
any advice would be appreciated, thanks

P.S. I have some experience with handguns but not much.

I know there are lots of Glock fans out there, but I sure do like my Springfield XD9. It feels just right in my hands and is a much better gun than I am a shooter. Just my .02.

I like the CZ pattern guns. Not sure if you can find a CZ in your neck of the woods. I do know that Norinco imports a clone to Canada, but I don't like buying from the Chinese if I can help it. Glock 17 will function flawlessly, as will a SIG 226. Hi Powers are nice but I like the ergonomics of the CZ-75 better. If you can track one down, try to get a ITM AT-84 or similar, AKA Sphinx depending on when it was made.

I am in the early stages of a serious addiction, so while I don't know everything yet, I know what I like. :D

My Sig X- Five Allround is my favorite 9mm so far. It would be a poor carry choice (imo) which you are not gonna do, but it would be great for hd and range work, so it sounds right up your alley. Very high quality gun.

Good luck with your decision.

I recently purchased my first 9mm handgun (nothing like starting a new caliber!) for use in IDPA matches. Ammo prices finally drove me to the “dreaded 9.” I know, but it’s a personal prejudice. :D

I bought a Springfield XD9 Service. I have to say, I would highly recommend the XD series to anyone (even though I was not able to hit the target at 21’ when I first took it out to the range, I can now consistently draw and fire in the ten ring after some practice). It feels good in my hand, but you may want to look for the “Tactical” with the longer barrel. A great medium size semi that’s well worth the money. I own Glocks too, but find the additional grip safety to be comforting. Also, the loaded chamber and cocked indicators are very well done and great for low/no light situations.

The Glock, Springfield XD series, and S&W M&P’s (I have only heard good things about the M&P series) are all comparatively priced. For about $200USD less ($350USD), you can pick up a very reliable S&W Sigma (new 3rd Generation). The Sigma is exactly the same size as the XD9. I have one in .40S&W and it is incredibly reliable. That said, they come from the factory with a VERY heavy trigger that is not that smooth. Dry firing a thousand (or two thousand) times really smoothes out the trigger, but it remains very heavy. That’s probably a good thing with a self defense gun. BTW, the Sigma is almost an exact copy (OK, it is an EXACT copy) of the Glock. Very easy take down and cleaning. A plus with the Sigma is the very good S&W customer service. Other “bargain” priced semi manufacturers probably don’t have the same level of service.

Good luck with your search,
Matt

If the choice is between a Croatian pistol and an Austrian pistol I will go with the Austrian pistol each and every time.
Glock is my choice and a Model 17 or 19 will do you well.

All great choices, I prefer my CZ75 at the range, and my G19 for CCW. The CZ being the better shooter of the two. Both weapons are 100% dependable, but nothing beats a Glock on parts avalibility, holster selection, ease of takedown and total disasembly.:)

Any 9mm Glock 17/19/26/34.

IMHO Glock makes the best 9mm pistol.

Accurate, Reliable and practically indestructible.

BHP, of your choices. I would throw in the XD to look at if it is available.

glock17, a Sig p226 or a browning hi power
Of what you have listed, honestly, you can't go wrong with either of them. Its going to boil down to personal preference. How does it feel in your hand, how you like the trigger pull, etc., etc.

The main differences being the Browning has a single action trigger, where all it does is release the cocked hammer. The Glock has a striker firing system where the trigger partially cocks and releases the striker. The Sig is a traditional double action that will cock and then release a hammer. Each of these will impart a different feel to shooting the gun.

Another difference is going to be that the Glock has a polymer frame and the other two are alloys. The Glock also has the lowest parts count and the least complicated design / usage.

The Sig will probably be more expensive than the other two by about 25% or more.

Let us know how you do!

Great all around 9mm Pistol; FNP-9, w/three 16 round magazines. Easy to shoot and take apart, along with a custom fitting grip.

North of 49th,
Welcome to this forum...

Of the three pistols you listed I would buy the Sig P226. Sig has proven time and time again to be a quality product you can depend upon.

Either get a Browning Hi Power which may need a trigger job and/or mag disconnect removal or a CZ-75 variant.

Please also consider the M&P 9mm from Smith & Wesson. I have never owned a Glock, but I preferred the M&P to my XD.

The M&P is also American made (at least that's on your continent) and Smith & Wesson support is excellent. I'm not implying that other companies support may not be excellent, just that I know S&W's is.

Regards...

I like my SIG P-226, Although this is indicative of only one gun, mine has NEVER jammed or misfired with any brand or bullet weight. It feels good in the hand and points naturally (for me) and has a kind of 'down to business' look to it.

If price is an issue, I bought mine used as part of a federal agency trade-in and have received a well cared-for gun that has some holster wear on the slide, but is utterly dependable.

thanks fellow THRer's for all the info. I think i will make my descion based on how the sit in my hand then. I do have to agree with ironvic that the sig has a very down to business look.
thanks again

Just my $.02 but I just bought a Stoeger Cougar 8000 for $350 (same as the now defunct Beretta 8000, but now made in Turkey) I really like the way this gun feels in my large hands and so far in my limited shooting, it's been really nice. Extra mags are a little spendy, but the gun is a great bargain. Of the three you listed my choice would be the Sig, can't go wrong with the Sig... I just don't really care for Glocks, used to have one, but I have a really hard time carrying a loaded gun without a safety or heavy trigger pull. But that's just my hang up.
