Looking for a "just because" .308 semi auto rifle

In your initial post you gave the impression that this would be your "one rifle". .223 in my opinion is "for entertainment purposes only". If I was only going to have one rifle I would get a .308, as I believe it covers the widest variety of uses, and surplus can be found fairly cheap for plinking.

An AR telestock looks good an a AR, not a shotgun, not a AK, not a 10/22, not a shovel, and not a Sig 556.

My thoughts exactly. There seems to be a major push to make all guns look the same. Put rails on the front end and an AR telestock on the rear end. +1 and then some.

Could that be because of this simple factor that brought down the great "Evil Empire" and that liberals hate just about as much as guns?

Thats what the market wants right now! If people want to hang stuff from there guns, let them, take the rails off if you don't want them. Don't like the stock, switch it out with something else.

It could also be the fact that adjustable length of pull stocks are a good idea and the M4 style stock is one of the more poplular and cheaper ones. And it could also be possible that it might be a good idea to put a light or a vertical front grip in front to see what you are shooting at or control recoil..... Nah could never be either.

Your going to have to explain that sentence to me.

Telescoping stocks are a good thing, but putting an M-4 style stock on every gun ever is ugly, boring, and lazy.

I've got nothing against rails, for the most part. I think most of the time they are silly, wasted, and overdone, but they have their uses. Sometimes I think they even make the rifle look better, ARs and short FALs for example. In other cases I think they are breathtakingly ugly, for example the SOCOM II.

Free market, taking down communism. Thats what I meant to try to get across and admittily did a really bad job. :uhoh:

Any way market says people want M4 stocks and rails, people get M4 stocks and rails. The market says people want lever action rifles with bulit in digital clocks, people will get that too.

Don't disagree with you on the M14 with rails, just seems out of place.

Hanzo581,

You have Rem 870 shotgun.
Consider a Rem 7600 Pump rifle in 308 with a 10-rd mag.
It can use the same stocks as 870, so you can put an AR-like collapsible pistol-grip stock or others.
The barrel is 22" but you could cut it to 18". It's light, reliable, and legal in places a semi-auto is not.

It sold at Walmart for under $400 when I last looked.

Or just find this one: http://www.remingtonle.com/rifles/7600.htm

I have to suggest you go back to the .308 as your caliber of choice. Personally I don't trust the 5.56 entirely, and see no major advantage to using it. I keep 5.56 caliber rifles, but consider the .308 to be my "go to" caliber. I recently had the pleasure of running through Team Spartan's rifle course using the FAL. I found that I could do everything with the .308 caliber rifle that I could do with the 5.56, just as fast, and with FAL reliability. I am sure the Sig will be weapon of quality and reliability, but if you want a .308 why not get one?

As the the platform, I suggest the DSA FAL but I may be a bit biased.

:D

I will say that if you take a look at the options available for that rifle, it is hard to find another .308 caliber battle rifle with as many choices for configuration and accessories from the factory. Having handled everything from the OSW to the DSA SPR, it really can do it all. Of course you can set up most guns to your liking if you want to throw the money at them. If you are going to be a one rifle man (quite admirable), then that gives you the advantage of spending only on one platform. You have had some solid advice and good suggestions from the members here regardless of the .308 caliber rifle you might choose.

Guys thank you all for your responses, but alas I just got back from putting my deposit on a Sig 566+EOtech 512 combo for $1400, but I am #27 on my dealers list so who knows when I will get my baby :uhoh:

Well, after a lot of research, and re-reading you guys responses, I have come to realize perhaps the .308 is the way to go over the .223, since this will be my only rifle...that and the fact I still have no idea when I could actually have the Sig in my hands, I am not the most patient person.

I have decided to go with this

Looks like a good choice. I'd substitute "first" for "only". I've been looking at these for a while. I have the BAR Stalker in .308 and just bought the Savage 10FP in .308. I've got hunting and target shooting covered, but am lacking in high capacity .308. Do have the .223 Bushy. I think the DSA is a much better looking rifle than the Sig, and I am a Sig fan.

I know this may be a hard question to answer, I am considering a FAL, but the only rifle I have ever fired was a .22lr.

Basically I am asking what is the recoil like? I know a lot of recoil perception is subjective but I just want to know roughly what I am getting myself into.

How would it feel in comparison to lets say 12ga 2 3/4" 00 Buckshot federal reduced recoil I shoot out of my 870 with a 18 1/2" barrel? As that is the only long gun I have fired

Any help would be great

I would say much less then a 12 guage. Never shot a FAL but I shot my wood stocked CETME and the recoil was less then a 20 guage with regualr bunny killing loads in it. Was more of a push back into the shoulder then a "kick" if anything.

Hope that helps, good look with the FAL man. I am sure you will love it.
