Regarding bears, please read:

When a bear jumps on you or charges you completely unexpectedly, even a rifle in hand may not be fast enough to help you.
As with many things I've learned here, thinking about the physical aspects and speed of actions involved...sometime backup plans aren't worth planning for at all.
I have a bear reserve not far from me, but when I hike I carry something suitable for dogs or 2 legged predators. From all the bear attack stories I've read, he'll either kill me, leave me alone or firing my weapon "may" scare him off enough to end the attack.
